Spanish Duo set the pace in Champions League Odds after Quarter Final First Legs

What amazing outcomes in the first legs of the 2011 Champions League Quarter Finals this week with three of the four ties effectively already decided? The results ahead of next week’s second legs were:

Inter Milan 2-5 Schalke04
Real Madrid 4-0 Spurs
Barcelona 5-1 Shakhtar Donetsk
Chelsea 0-1 Man Utd

Only the all Premier League tie between Chelsea and Man Utd remains in the balance but it has to be said that United hold all the keys, with the next leg being at Old Trafford and having a 1-0 advantage after putting up an extremely professional performance at Stamford Bridge. That said Chelsea were the last team to beat United at Old Trafford and know that if they up their performance levels from what they showed in the first leg, then, if nothing else they have a chance.

It has taken a massive effort to knock Barcelona out of the Champions League in the last few years, over the past three years Barcelona have either won the Champions League or gone out to the eventual winners and so far they are looking good to continue that record.

Barcelona face Real Madrid in what could be the most exciting Champions League Semi Final in years and there is no surprise that it is once again Barcelona who are favourites to progress as they are the favourites to win the entire tournament. Barcelona are just even money with most bookies to win the Champions League, the fact that Real Madrid have been drawn against the favourites means they are now only the third most likely winners in the Champions League odds at around 10/3.

Progress in this semi final still won’t guarantee Champions League victory so a bet on either team to qualify for the final will offer a better bet for some punters, Barcelona are just 1/2 to progress in this tie whilst Real Madrid, who secured their place in the Semi Final by beating Tottenham twice, are 15/8 to reach the Champions League Final at Wembley this season.

It looks as though there could be English representation in this year’s Wembley Final, Man Utd who are the only remaining English team in the competition after they beat Chelsea in both legs of their Quarter Final, have been handed a favourable tie against Schalke who have been the surprise package in this year’s competition. Man Utd are now second favourites to win the Champions League and can be backed at 5/2 to win the tournament, Schalke are very unfancied despite their great results against Inter Milan in the Quarter Finals, Schalke can be backed at 14/1 to pull of a majot shock by winning the Champions League.

It is therefore no surprise that Man Utd are major favourites to reach the final, they can be backed at just 2/7 to progress against Schalke and should be a good bet to win both legs of the Semi Final whilst those who aren’t fans of Man Utd this season will get big odds on Schalke reaching the Champions League Final, the Germans are 11/4 to make it through.

For the first time in their club’s history, Tottenham Hotspurs are in the quarter final of the Champions League and there opposition is none other than Real Madrid! Recent results have thrown this season’s Premier League race wide open at both ends of the table. Whilst the recent downturn in fortunes of league leaders Manchester United have been dominating the back pages of our daily papers, there is also quite the relegation dogfight going on at the bottom, and for the first time in recent memory there are virtually no sets of fans who can relax as we enter the final quarter of the season.
The race for the Premier League title itself includes every team in the top four; the race for European qualification stretches down to arguably Everton in tenth. Meanwhile the relegation battle has had a number of usual suspects all season, but now includes all the teams in the bottom half with just eight points separating the teams between eleventh and twentieth. It is mid-March and thus all the talk in the sports world revolves around the big tourney. You can begin Online March Madness Betting now as the games get set for Thursday. Spurs are comfortably in fifth, six points ahead of Liverpool with a game in hand, but they have much higher aspirations. They have been battling Chelsea over the last few weeks, with the Blues now in fourth with 51 points, three more than Tottenham.

They have been passed by Chelsea due to a tough stretch of road games where they picked up four points in three games. A victory over Sunderland was followed by a loss to Blackpool and a draw against Wolverhampton. Last week they played to a hard fought scoreless draw in the Champions League against Milan. Now they must return their focus to the Premiership where they have not won in over a month.

They return to White Hart Lane where they have dropped only one Premier League game all season. West Ham meanwhile, have seven wins total on the season, and only two on the road. If Tottenham are to be considered among the best in the league, they must dispose of the bottom feeders of the league when they are playing at home.

A draw would be a big upset for West Ham, and would be quite helpful in their quest ot avoid relegation. They sit in the drop zone currently with 31 points. They are third last, and their point total is the same as Birmingham, who is at the moment out of the drop zone with one fewer game played.

Still, West Ham has played well of late in the Premiership. They are on a two-match winning streak, having best Stoke City 3-0 and Liverpool 3-0, both at home. In fact, in their past six Premiership matches, the Hammers have won three, drawn two, and only lost one. Even in the loss, the Hammers played well, and were downed by an injury time goal that broke a late tie. Despite the shutout in that match, West Ham have scored 14 goals in that six game stretch, and in four games they netted three goals.

Betting lines: Tottenham are the much superior team, and playing at home they are the big favourites. Still, there is something to be said about the Hammers recent play, and their ability to score goals. If Spurs defense falters, this game could get high scoring and play to the advantage of West Ham. Look for them to play more inspired, and earn the upset draw.

It seems the Champions League Second Round first leg games and results were kinder to the English clubs than the two Spanish clubs left in the competition, despite the Spaniards being the favourites in the Champions League 2011 Betting Odds.

Spurs and Arsenal were particularly well backed in the Champions League Odds as they were, and probably still are, the least likely of the English clubs to progress, Spurs hold a massive advantage over AC Milan following their 1-0 win at the San Siro, they are 16/1 to win the Champions League, the same odds as their rivals Arsenal, who also hold a one goal lead over their opponents but they have to go to the Nou Camp to face Barcelona who are still favourites to win the competition at around 2/1 with most bookies.

Just like their Spanish counterparts Barcelona, Real Madrid also failed to record a win in their first leg tie, the champions League Second favourites who are under the guidance of two times Champions League winner Jose Mourinho, drew 1-1 with Lyon and they don’t quite look ready for Champions League glory, they are 9/2 in the outright betting which puts them just ahead of Chelsea, who look certain to progress to the next round after beating FC Copenhagen 2-0.

Man Utd were the only English team not to win their first leg, they are now 8/1 chances to win the Champions League and any kind of win at Old Trafford will guarantee that. The first leg results mean England have closed the gap on Spain in the winning nationality betting, the unbeaten English sides are now 6/4 to be the winning nationality of the Champions League whilst the winless Spain are 10/11. The Italian sides all lost their first legs and they are way behind Germany now, Italy can be backed at 20/1 with Germany at 14/1.

Manchester United to Win Premier League

It’s that time of year again when the battle for the English Premier League is heating right up and the battle for the title is well under way.
