Can United enjoy a weekend off from the Premier League?

Manchester United don’t often seem to possess a great deal of fear or anxiety when it comes to performing under pressure, but it’s pretty easy to imagine that the Red Devils will be looking forward to a weekend during which they get the chance to watch their title rivals fight on in the league rather than having to go out on the pitch and ensure that they get a result or else risk seeing their lead slip and their rivals gain more and more confidence in their quest to win the Premier League.

However, although United may well worry that their main title rivals Arsenal are going to catch up with them and get closer to the league lead this weekend, the players also know that Arsenal’s game on Sunday against Liverpool is nothing even remotely close to a formality, and the chances are that they could still see their lead intact, and with Arsenal having wasted their game in hand over their rivals. The Premier League odds certainly suggest this could happen.

Despite this, United could well find themselves sitting there on Sunday evening having crashed out of the FA Cup and feeling anxious about how the Premier League title race is going to pan out should results go against them. Add to this potential equation the fact that United also have at least two Champions League games left to play and you can understand why Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad is about to be tested to the absolute limit. The football betting tips reflect this.

Ultimately, although a few players in the United squad will surely be about to see their mental resolve tested, if any one man can lead those under his control to glory despite immense pressure and expectations in all competitions, it’s Sir Alex.

Preston v Sheffield United Preview

Some would say that both of these sides are already down, with Preston approaching this game sat in 23rd position while Sheffield United are rock bottom of the league in 24th. Both have endured dreadful seasons and while they are not yet mathematically relegated, they both have enormous tasks on their hands to stay in the division with just five games remaining.

Preston’s form over the past few weeks has been actually very good but it’s most certainly a case of too little, too late for the Deepdale outfit. The Lilywhites have lost just once in their last six but after collecting just two points from their last three games, it would be fair to say that their form has dried off slightly as we head into the season finale. As it stands, Phil Brown’s men have collected thirty six points, meaning that seven points now keep them adrift of safety. It’s generally thought that fifty points is the mark for survival and with just fifteen points left to play for, it’s no surprise to see how Preston’s chances have been written off by many already.

Sheffield United meanwhile have endured an equally awful campaign and many of their supporters have also accepted their fate. United are actually one point worse off than their opponents meaning that eight points keep them away from safety and with so little of the season remaining, survival now seems almost impossible. A few weeks ago the Bramall Lane outfit held a slight glimmer of hope of surviving after recording two successive home victories, but since then their form has dipped again and the Blades approach this clash having lost their last three. Considering the fact that their last two games were at home, Micky Adams will be deeply frustrated and he may even be worried about his own position, despite inheriting the Blades’ problems from previous managers.

Preston’s chances in this one have been hit with something of a injury crisis as Phil Brown prepares to be without umpteen players. The likes of Leon Cort, Sean St Ledger, David Gray, Amine Linganzi and Conor McLaughlin are all on the treatment table and there are doubts that some will play again this season. Sheffield United also have plenty of concerns and Micky Adams will leave it late before making a decision on Daniel Bogdanovic, Joe Mattock and Stephen Quinn who are all doubtful through injuries. Ched Evans and Richard Cresswell are definite absentees, but Adams at least has some good news with Lee Williamson set to return to the reckoning after completing a suspension.

As for a prediction, we think this will end in a draw. Preston hold the home advantage and have the better form, but with the Lilywhites having so many injury concerns this will be no walkover. Micky Adams will demand nothing less than a battling performance from his United side and with that, we’ll predict a 2-2 score line.

It is mid-March and thus all the talk in the sports world revolves around the big tourney. You can begin Online March Madness Betting now as the games get set for Thursday. They have been passed by Chelsea due to a tough stretch of road games where they picked up four points in three games. A victory over Sunderland was followed by a loss to Blackpool and a draw against Wolverhampton. Last week they played to a hard fought scoreless draw in the Champions League against Milan. Now they must return their focus to the Premiership where they have not won in over a month.

They return to White Hart Lane where they have dropped only one Premier League game all season. West Ham meanwhile, have seven wins total on the season, and only two on the road. If Tottenham are to be considered among the best in the league, they must dispose of the bottom feeders of the league when they are playing at home.

A draw would be a big upset for West Ham, and would be quite helpful in their quest ot avoid relegation. They sit in the drop zone currently with 31 points. They are third last, and their point total is the same as Birmingham, who is at the moment out of the drop zone with one fewer game played.

Still, West Ham has played well of late in the Premiership. They are on a two-match winning streak, having best Stoke City 3-0 and Liverpool 3-0, both at home. In fact, in their past six Premiership matches, the Hammers have won three, drawn two, and only lost one. Even in the loss, the Hammers played well, and were downed by an injury time goal that broke a late tie. Despite the shutout in that match, West Ham have scored 14 goals in that six game stretch, and in four games they netted three goals.

Betting lines: Tottenham are the much superior team, and playing at home they are the big favourites. Still, there is something to be said about the Hammers recent play, and their ability to score goals. If Spurs defense falters, this game could get high scoring and play to the advantage of West Ham. Look for them to play more inspired, and earn the upset draw.

Liverpool look to halt united charge

Liverpool v Manchester United has always been a game worth watching. A long running rivalry with the potential to boil over at any time, this one should have its fair share of controversial incidence.

It’s Liverpool v Man Utd on Sunday at Anfield. The game comes at a crucial time of the season and with the chance to win football bets on this one, it should prove to be an enthralling match no matter what.

Both have had their fair share of wobbles recently and dropped points. With Kenny Dalglish at the helm, Liverpool have undergone somewhat of a resurgence under the fan favourite and have moved slowly but surely up the league into 6th place.
But a turgid 0-0 draw against Wigan and a 3-1 defeat at the hands of West Ham in the Premier League have put the brakes on any slim hopes the Anfield club had of a late charge for a Champions League spot.

Limitations within the Liverpool squad have been exposed of late and they will have a tough time trying to restrict a United side seemingly destined to win the Premier League at a canter.

Meanwhile Sir Alex Ferguson will still be reeling from the 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea on Tuesday, and will be wary of the effects of two defeats on the bounce will have on his side in the title race. With games against Chelsea and Arsenal still to play for the title is decided, the Scot will try and avoid a run of defeats at a crucial time.

Old Liverpool foe Ryan Giggs will mark twenty years at United and there will be no finer way to mark the occasion with a goal against the old enemy. The Premier League veteran scored the winner from the penalty spot when the teams last met, and will be hopeful of repeating the trick this Sunday.

Having played a part in all of United’s 11 Premier League titles so far, look for the Welsh Wizard to deal a double blow to Liverpool with a goal against them on the way to the title which will move the side past Liverpool’s record of 18 league titles.
Nemanja Vidic will miss the game following his red card at Stamford Bridge, and with new striker Luiz Suarez looking lively since joining the club in January, he may well exploit Vidic’s absence with a goal that will make him an instant Kop favourite. Centre back Rio Ferdinand will also miss the game.

United have won both encounters between the two so far this season, including a 1-0 win in the FA Cup in Dalglish’s first game in charge of the club, who will be without full-back Martin Kelly, who has been sidelined for 5 weeks with a hamstring tear.

United are the football betting favourites for this one despite their defensive problems and the loss against Chelsea, and with Wayne Rooney marking his return to form with a fantastic goal against Chelsea, it is hard to see how Liverpool can stop the champions elect.

It’s that time of year again when the battle for the English Premier League is heating right up and the battle for the title is well under way. With Manchester United sitting pretty at the top of the table, four points ahead of Arsenal and with a game in hand over Man City and Spurs, they look good to hang on but four points is absolutely nothing in footballing terms and a couple of bad games could spell disaster for them.

Of the back of barely scraping through to the next round of the FA Cup, by beating Crawley Town 1-0, United need to have a serious re-think about the next few months. Things are mixed at United these days. On the positive side, new contracts have been signed Evra and Ryan Giggs which means the 37-year-old will take his time at Old Trafford into a remarkable 21st year, having made his club debut as a substitute on 2 March, 1991.

Sheffield United v Nottingham Forest Preview

This is another of the big games this Tuesday, as a Sheffield United side battling relegation host promotion chasing Nottingham Forest. An incredible thirty points separate the two sides, which is simply amazing considering the fact that United were in the Premier League only a few years ago whereas Forest were down in League One.

Sheffield United are fast becoming the laughing stock of the division and with the club currently six points adrift of safety, it will take an incredible run to save them from the drop. What’s more, with Scunthorpe picking up three points at the weekend, they are now five points away from them in 22nd place. To compile the problems, manager Micky Adams is still searching for his first victory despite being in charge of thirteen games. The Blades head into this clash having lost their last four and with all of those opponents in the bottom half, three of which who are actually fighting the drop with them, it’s no surprise to see them in this awful predicament. Of course, there is still time to turn things round but with the likes of Forest, Leeds, QPR, Cardiff and Swansea still to play, they have an incredibly tough schedule.

Nottingham Forest meanwhile are battling at the opposite end of the table, with the City Ground outfit approaching this encounter in 5th spot. It looks as though their playoff spot is pretty secure, with six points separating them from 7th place, but Billy Davies will be aiming his sights a little higher as three points keep them from the automatic positions. However, despite their lofty position, recent form hasn’t been too impressive with the club currently on a four game winless run. Their last game saw them defeated 1-0 at home to Hull and seeing as their form at the City Ground was once their major strength, Davies will be hoping that his side aren’t about to capitulate as we approach the season finale.

Things are looking up for the home side on the team news front as Micky Adams looks to welcome back the likes of Nick Montgomery, Joe Mattock and Sam Vokes who have all been struggling with injuries in recent weeks. Adams will also be able to call on Shane Lowry, who has been suspended for the previous two games. Nottingham Forest meanwhile just have the one piece of news to report on, as Paul McKenna looks set to return after missing the last game through a knee injury.

Sheffield United may be on a dreadful run of form, but we think they will put an end to their disastrous run here. Nottingham Forest are on something of a downer and with that, we think United could scrape a 1-0 victory in this one.

Coventry v Sheffield United Preview

This game sees new Sheffield United manager Micky Adams return to Coventry, another side that he once managed. Adams is still looking for his first win as the Blades’ boss and with United sat just one place above the drop zone, he certainly needs it quickly. Their opponents meanwhile are in a much more stable position and despite early flirtations with the top six, Aidy Boothroyd will be satisfied with their position of 11th.

While Coventry approach this game in a comfortable position, their recent form is absolutely dreadful and Sheffield United should feel they have an excellent chance of netting all the points. It wasn’t too long ago that the Sky Blues were up in the playoffs, yet an accumulation of just two points from a possible eighteen has sent them tumbling down the table. However, while their league form has been poor, they at least head into this game on the back of a victory following a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in the Cup last weekend. Despite the slump in form, Boothroyd’s men still have everything to play for with just four points separating them from the playoff places.

Sheffield United on the other hand are in all sorts of turmoil, although their supporters will hope that once Micky Adams has settled at the club then everything will smooth out. The Blades have endured a truly awful season and after picking up just twenty six points, they sit just one place above the drop zone in 21st position. Adams has yet to record a victory as their manager although in fairness, supporters have commented on an improvement in performances since he joined the club. However, the main issue at Bramall Lane is the lack of goals and having scored just twenty five so far, they have the worst record in front of goal in the division. If that statistic doesn’t improve, there’s no doubt that they’ll be hovering around the relegation zone for the foreseeable future.

On the team news front, Coventry are preparing to be without striker Marlon King again as the former Watford man completes his three match suspension. On a more positive note, Aidy Boothroyd will be able to select both Lee Carsley and Sammy Clingan who have recovered from their knocks. Sheffield United meanwhile could hand debuts to new loan signings Shane Lowry and Joe Mattock. Elsewhere, Lee Williamson is a definite absentee through a groin problem, while Stephen Quinn will come back into contention following a suspension.

As for a prediction, we think Sheffield United could just about get the win here. Coventry are in truly awful form and with Micky Adams desperate for his first win as United’s manager, we think he could get it at his former club

Nani's strike sends United three points clear

By Ian Wilkerson 1:55PM 5 JAN 2011 MANCHESTER UNITED were trimmed to 10-11 from evens to win the Premier League after seizing a three-point lead at the top ofthe standings with a 2-1 win against Stoke at Old Trafford on Tuesday. Hills go 10-1 that they remain unbeaten this season.

And although Stoke pulled one back early in the second half through Dean Whitehead, Nani put the home side back in front 12 minutes later.

Elsewhere, Fulham and Birmingham fired themselves out of the relegation zone with a 3-0 victory at home to West Brom and a 2-1 win away at Blackpool respectively.

Three more football league managers were shown the door pn Tuesday, to add to Crystal Palace’s George Burley and Barnet’s Mark Stimson who were both sacked on New Year’s Day.

The most high-profile departure was at Charlton where Phil Parkinson left after three years at the helm.

The Addicks are just three points behind Southampton – the occupants of the second promotion place in League One, but they are on a run of just one win from their last eight matches following Monday’s 4-2 loss at home to Swindon.

Dennis Wise was quickly backed in to 1-3 to take over, and Ladbrokes subsequently took the market down.

Chris Hutchings has left Walsall after a 4-1 defeat at Peterborough proved to be the final straw for the Saddlers, who are eight points from safety in League One.

Paul Simpson has left Stockport after just six months at Edgeley Park. The Hatters have won just once on their own patch this season and are four points off the bottom of League Two.

With eight departures having occurred since December 29, Paddy Power fancy that Roy Keane may be on borrowed time at Championship strugglers Ipswich.

He is 4-9 to be out by the end of the campaign with former Newcastle supremo Chris Hughton 9-4 to take over.

United Vs Arsenal MoneyBack

The biggest game of the season so far kicks off at 8.00pm tonight. Manchester United and Arsenal are third and first respectively going into this match, but Arsenal have played one more game than United.

United are back to full strength and due to bad weather last week they have enjoyed a good rest.

On the other hand Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas only has a “small chance” of being fit, so it will probably be a choice between Tomas Rosicky, who has started the previous two Premier League games in that role, and Robin van Persie, who is fit again and has started the Carling Cup game against Wigan and the Champions League match versus Partizan Belgrade there.

My gut feeling is United could go ballistic on Arsenal tonight, if Berbatov and Rooney are both in the mood then Arsenal’s defense will not be able to hold them. United Liverpool Odds

Make no mistake about it, a 3rd round FA Cup fixture is hardly a big priority for Manchester United at the moment. However, being drawn against Liverpool gives this fixture some added spice. Manchester United and Liverpool have fought out some epic battles in the cup over the last 30 years and both sides will be taking the fixture seriously.

Sir Alex Ferguson arrived at Old Trafford 25 years ago with the stated intention to ‘Knock Liverpool off its perch’. Few can doubt that he’s achieved his goal, Ferguson knows a win for his team on sunday will be The coup de grâce for Roy Hodgson’s reign at Anfield and also signal the end of Liverpool’s 2010/2011 campaign. In a season where United are currently on target to surpass Liverpool’s record of 18 league titles the humiliation will be too much to bear for most scousers.

Liverpools recent defeats to Blackburn Rovers, Wolves and Newcastle United doesn’t offer much comfort for the travelling away fans, but this game is renowned for throwing the form book out of the window. Expect a bruising battling encounter and don’t be surprised if you see a flash of red card and a penalty or two. History also dictates that in every FA Cup tie between these two sides since 1985, the winners of the tie have gone on to lift the trophy. Motivation, indeed, if any were needed.

Blackpool’s biggest home game of 2010 sees the Premier League newboys host Manchester United this Saturday. Bet on Blackpool vs Manchester United after reading our betting preview.

Despite being tipped as contenders for the drop, Blackpool have performed quite well this season and are sitting in a comfortable mid table position at this moment ( 11th in the table). However the tight nature of the Premier League means that while Ian Holloway’s side are only a point behind Europe chasing Sunderland, they are also only five above the relegation zone.

Blackpool drew 2-2 with Bolton Wanderers in their last game. The Seasiders had the match in their grasp as they lead 2-0 with a quarter of an hour to go, but they allowed Bolton to net twice late in the fixture and grab a 2-2 draw.

Manchester United lead the Premier League after thrashing Blackburn 7-1 last weekend. The Red Devils lead Chelsea by two points after the latter could only draw against Newcastle United.

However United suffered a shock defeat in midweek as they were beaten 4-0 by West Ham United in the Carling Cup. While the squad was by no means United’s strongest squad, the manner in which they conceded the goals would have been a real concern to Sir Alex Ferguson.

Bristol City v Sheffield United Preview

These are two teams who were expected to challenge for the playoff positions at the start of the season, or maybe even the automatic spots. However, both have endured dreadful seasons and with Bristol City sat in 21st and Sheffield United in 18th, this is more of a relegation clash if anything. On the plus side, both are coming into this game on the back of victories and that perhaps makes the fixture even more crucial.

United doing what they do best

There aren’t many sides in the Premier League who can afford to not play their best football, yet still sit 2nd place in the table, remain undefeated and qualify for the next phase of the Champions League with a game to spare and without conceding a goal. Manchester United however are doing just that.

Despite drawing 6 out of their 7 away games so far this season, United find themselves level on points with leaders Chelsea; whether this is down to United being cautious and setting themselves up not to lose or simply taking advantage of Chelsea’s indifferent form of late is down to interpretation. Whichever it is, Sir Alex Ferguson is working his magic once again; and one thing that’s for sure is United can never be written off in any game or any title race.

The Red Devil’s have had to come from behind in 3 of their away games so far this season to earn valuable points that have kept them in touch with the leaders. This fight and tenacity has been installed by Ferguson in every player that he has bought in throughout his 24 year tenure to date. Any of you remember the 1998-99 season, most notably United’s games against Arsenal in the FA Cup semi final and the notorious Champions League final against Bayern Munich?

This season United have had to cope with several injuries to key players which has seen them miss a large chunk of the season to date. You are used to seeing household names wearing Manchester United Shirts week in, week out, but that hasn’t always been the case this year.

Wayne Rooney, Antonio Valencia & Ryan Giggs have been the main absentees and most other teams in England would really be struggling if they were without that array of talent; but not Manchester United.

The likes of Ji-Sung Park & Javier Hernandez have come into the side and slotted in like first team regulars. This just goes to show the strength in depth that this United team has and whatever side Sir Alex chooses to send out on to that pitch will perform and are capable of beating anyone in the Premier League.

With qualification from the Champions League assured after last nights victory at Ibrox and Wayne Rooney appearing to be back to full fitness United can seemingly only go from strength to strength.

Of course United will be up there challenging by the end of the season, but can they go on and regain the Premier League title again? If they can overcome what is potentially a difficult Christmas period, then they will run Chelsea to the wire; and come the end of the season I wouldn’t bet against Manchester United being champions of England once again.

Michael Carrick has made it quite clear that he wants to extend his stay at Old Trafford further than the 2012 end of his contract. The midfielder has reclaimed his place in United’s first team following a six week absence with his troublesome Achilles tendon. After four years in Manchester following his big money move from Spurs, Carrick is desperate to get contract talks up and running.
