Blackpool’s biggest home game of 2010 sees the Premier League newboys host Manchester United this Saturday. Bet on Blackpool vs Manchester United after reading our betting preview.

Despite being tipped as contenders for the drop, Blackpool have performed quite well this season and are sitting in a comfortable mid table position at this moment ( 11th in the table). However the tight nature of the Premier League means that while Ian Holloway’s side are only a point behind Europe chasing Sunderland, they are also only five above the relegation zone.

Blackpool drew 2-2 with Bolton Wanderers in their last game. The Seasiders had the match in their grasp as they lead 2-0 with a quarter of an hour to go, but they allowed Bolton to net twice late in the fixture and grab a 2-2 draw.

Manchester United lead the Premier League after thrashing Blackburn 7-1 last weekend. The Red Devils lead Chelsea by two points after the latter could only draw against Newcastle United.

However United suffered a shock defeat in midweek as they were beaten 4-0 by West Ham United in the Carling Cup. While the squad was by no means United’s strongest squad, the manner in which they conceded the goals would have been a real concern to Sir Alex Ferguson.

Blackpool Vs Man City Odds

Make no mistake about it, this is a massive game for both clubs. If Blackpool can pull off another major scalp in visitors Manchester City – then Ian Holloway will be a dead cert for manager of the month, If not the year! On the other hand if City can beat Blackpool away from home, they will have put down a major marker for the season.

The bookmakers have Manchester City odds on favorites to beat Blackpool, but let’s not forget that Newcastle United and Liverpool know it’s not going to be as easy as just turning up! Speaking in the Sun, Manchester United captain Gary Neville talking about the neighbours Man City said: “There is no doubt we have to see City as major challengers this season along with Chelsea. “Both clubs are above us and the money City have spent, and the quality and depth in both squads, means we have to see them both as rivals.” for City to be taken seriously as title contenders then they must win these ‘easy’ away games.

Reds 14-1 for the drop after Blackpool shock

By Ian Wilkerson 8:32PM 3 OCT 2010 LIVERPOOL are as short as 14-1 with Ladbrokes to be relegated from the Premier League after a 2-1 defeat to promoted Blackpool at Anfield on Sunday left them third from bottom in the table.

The loss was the Reds’ first home defeat of the season, but a 1-0 victory over West Brom is the only league success they have posted since Roy Hodgson took over from Rafael Benitez in the summer.

They have a week off for the international break before they take on Everton in the Merseyside derby, but Hodgson, who guided Fulham to last season’s Europa League final, is struggling and he was cut to 5-1 from 8-1 to be the next top-flight manager to lose his job with Hills following a defeat that embarrass the Anfield faithful.

They are 50-1 for the drop with Paddy Power, while Stan James believe the Reds can recover from their shaky start and go 8-11 that Liverpoolwill finish in the top six, something they failed to achieve under Benitez last season.

A more immediate concern will be the fitness of striker Fernando Torres, who was replaced after nine minutes after suffering a groin injury.

The Spain centre-forward has looked a shadow of his former self this season and has netted just once in nine appearances for his club in all competitions.

His body language suggests he is far from happy despite pledging his future to the Reds after the World Cup and he is 8-11 with Hills not to be at the club on the first day of next season. Hodgson is 4-6 to still be at the helm at that time.

Blackpool have been eased to 8-13 to make an immediate return to the Championship.

Blackpool suffer early ups and downs

The first two games of the season have taught Blackpool fans what the Premier League is all about – highs and lows.

After their unexpected 4-0 win over Wigan on the opening day, they themselves were the victims of a thrashing at the hands of Arsenal who managed six without reply.

Their second result was more widely predicted than the first, but taken together the two games mean it’s no easier to predict just how Blackpool will get on this season.

True, manager Ian Holloway would have seen any points picked up at the Emirates as a bonus, but the comprehensive manner of the defeat raised question marks.

However, Wigan are the kind of team they need to beat if they want to stay in the division and they clearly have what it takes to get one over on their fellow strugglers.

There are a lot of poor teams around this season – West Ham look unlikely to set the world alight, while a number of other teams will struggle. So if Blackpool can keep up the kind of form that saw them tonk Wigan, and don’t mind taking the occasional tonking themselves, they could hang on for a second season. However, they will still face a tough task in staying up and they would do well to learn from what happened with Hull City. They spent far too heavily in an attempt to remain in the Premier League and although they managed to stay up first time around, their eventual relegation plunged them into a financial crisis.

Blackpool then should concentrate on ensuring that if they do go down, they are able to make a swift return to the top flight.
