Sunderland boss having defensive nightmares

 Subscribe in a reader

Steve Bruce has stated he wants his Sunderland side to improve defensively if they want to avoid Premier League relegation, but injuries to key players from his back four is not helping the cause.

The Black Cats have struggled in recent weeks and have only kept one clean sheet since the turn of the year and as anyone who follows the football betting will know it’s hard to win games when you’re shipping goals.

As a result Sunderland have dropped down the table and, after their loss to West Brom at the weekend, they are now only six points above the Premier League relegation places.

Sunderland had 11 clean sheets prior to the start of 2011 and Bruce claims it is “easy to see where the problem lies” at this point in time, and his eyes are firmly rooted on his defenders.

What is not helping is defenders succumbing to injuries, with John Mensah the latest to be hit. The Ghana international tore a groin muscle in the West Brom game and looks to be out for at least three weeks.

With Anton Ferdinand also limping off, and Titus Bramble still out with injury, it means Bruce has a shortage of defenders going into their relegation six-pointer with Birmingham at the weekend and the Premier League betting offers suggest the game will be crucial to both sides’ futures.

The boss told the Shields Gazette: “If you look at the stats, we’ve conceded almost as many goals in the last eight games as we did in the rest of the season put together.

“That’s not good enough, and we have to put it right. We have to go back to basics and return to the way we were playing earlier on in the season.”

At least Bruce is seeing his forward options returning to fitness, with Danny Welbeck back and Fraizer Campbell close to returning after a long injury lay-off.

These two can take some pressure off Asamoah Gyan and hopefully get the goals to ensure Sunderland do not get sucked deeper into a Premier League relegation dogfight over the coming weeks.

Two former Manchester United teammates will go head to head on Saturday afternoon as Mark Hughes’ Fulham host Steve Bruce’s Sunderland at Craven Cottage.

Fulham were beaten 2-1 by Arsenal last weekend, with two beautiful goals from Samir Nasri proving to be their undoing. The Cottagers did fight hard in the game though but had nothing to show at the end for their efforts.

Diomansy Kamara scored Fulham’s only goal of the game against Arsenal and is expected to keep his spot in the side ahead of Andy Johnson, who has not fully recovered from his illness.

Fredrik Stoor, Bobby Zamora and Philippe Senderos all remain sidelined for Fulham, but Carlos Salcido could make a return against the Wearsiders.

Fulham fixtures- last five games- most recent first- Fulham scorers in brackets

Arsenal 2-1 Fulham ( Diomansy Kamara)
Fulham 1-1 Birmingham ( Clint Dempsey)
Fulham 1-4 Man City ( Zoltan Gera)
Newcastle 0-0 Fulham
Chelsea 1-0 Fulham

Sunderland are sitting in seventh place in the league table going into this fixture, while Fulham are just one place above the relegation zone. However Sunderland’s poor away form means that Fulham will fancy their chances of getting something from this game- the Wearsiders have won only one out of eight in their trips away from the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland beat West Ham United 1-0 at home last weekend with Jordan Henderson’s goal proving to be the difference between the two sides.

Titus Bramble, Michael Turner and Fraizer Campbell are out for Sunderland, while Asamoah Gyan and Craig Gordon will have late fitness tests.

Sunderland 1-0 West Ham ( Jordan Henderson)
Wolves 3-2 Sunderland ( Darren Bent, Danny Welbeck)

RELATED LINKS 25 pounds free bet Win a VIP Chelsea FCpackage  The Hammers lost to a first-half goal from Jordan Henderson and are now the same price as fellow strugglers Wigan and not far off 4-6 shots Wolves, who are level with them on points and goal difference at the bottom.

Manager Avram Grant has taken much of the criticism for West Ham's poor start and the Israeli is 5-4 favourite to be the next top-flight boss to leave his job.

West Brom beat Newcastle 3-1 at the Hawthorns and are now regarded as less likely than the Magpies to suffer an immediate return to the Championship.

The Baggies have drifted to 8-1 for the drop, whereas Newcastle are 7-1.
