Aston Villa Match Odds

Aston Villa was founded in 1874 by a group of cricketers who needed a game to occupy them during the winter. Aston Villa, nickname the Villans, soon became the Midlands dominant team and was one of the founder members of the Football League. In 1897 Villa won the League and Cup double and shortly after moved to Aston Lower Grounds which the fans named Villa Park.

In all they have won 7 First Division Championships and 7 FA Cups. Despite their early successes, by 1937 Villa were relegated and although the team was rebuilt after the Second World War their only achievement during this period was an F.A. Cup win in 1957.

The club struggled for many years and reached an all time low in 1971 when they were relegated to the Third Division. It would be 10 years before their fortunes changed and Ron Saunders would lead them to the League title. In 1982 under caretaker manager Tony Barton they won the European Cup beating Bayern Munich in the Final.

Villa suffered relegation again in 1987 swiftly followed by promotion in 1988. In 1993 with Ron Atkinson as manager they finished runners up to Manchester United in the newly formed Premier League and in 1994 and 1996 delighted the fans by winning the League Cup.

In 2006 Martin O’Neill was appointed as the new manager and during his second term in 2008, the team finished sixth in the League with the result that attendances at Villa Park soared. This was followed by two more sixth positions in 2009/10. In 2010 Villa lost in the League Cup Final and the FA Cup semi final and manager Martin O’Neill resigned.

Kevin MacDonald became the caretaker manager until the club appointed Gerard Houllier permanent manager in September 2010.

City out to 15-2 for title after defeat at Villa Park

By James Milton 7:41PM 22 JAN 2011 IT took less than 20 minutes for Darren Bent to start repaying the £18m fee that Aston Villa paid for him with the goal that saw off title hopefuls Manchester City on Saturday.

Bent, who was 7-1 to open the scoring, struck from close range
after just 18 minutes and 11-4 shots Villa held on to win 1-0.

The result took Villa up to 16th in the Premier League but City slip to third after their fifth defeat of the season.

Roberto Mancini’s Citizens have been pushed out to 15-2 to win the league and, while they were toiling at Villa Park, rivals Manchester United kept up their unbeaten start to the season with a 5-0 thrashing of Birmingham at OldTrafford.

United are 4-6 for the Premier League after Dimitar Berbatov took his goal tally for the season to 17 thanks to his third league hat-trick of the campaign.

Robin van Persie scored three goals and missed apenalty as Arsenal beat Wigan 3-0 and the Gunners, who move up to second place, are 15-2 for the title.

Tottenham were held to a 1-1 draw at Newcastle, where Gareth Bale went off injured after just ten minutes, and Liverpool won 3-0 at Wolves, who remain in the relegation zone.

Fulham won 2-0 against Stoke, Sunderland won at Blackpool and West Ham held Everton 2-2.

In the Championship, Cardiff are 6-1 to win the division after a 4-2 victory against Watford, in which Craig Bellamy, Michael Chopra and the returning Jay Bothroyd were all on target.

League One leaders Brighton lost 1-0 at Bournemouth, who move into second place. The Seagulls are 7-4 second-favourites for the league behind 13-8 shots Southampton, who lost 2-0 at struggling Tranmere.

Hearts are as short as 7-1 to win the SPL after beating Rangers
1-0. The Edinburgh club are just two points behind the Gers and seven behind leaders Celtic, who have played a game more.

A gamble on the Barnet-Macclesfield double result in Saturday’s League Two fixture at Moss Rose was foiled when the teams finished level at 1-1.

Most firms took their double-result prices down after an unusually high number of bets. Bet365 kept their market
up offering 7-1 from 22-1 just before kick-off, but the bet was scuppered by half-time, when the teams turned round goalless.

Blues drift to 6-1 for title retention after Villa draw

By Mark Langdon 8:16PM 2 JAN 2011 PRE-SEASON title favourites Chelsea have drifted to 6-1 from 4-1 to retain their Premier League title after yet another failure left them languishing well off the pace in fifth position.

RELATED LINKS 25 pounds free bet Bet In-Play now  The astonishing 3-3 draw with Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge on Sunday has left the champions trailing leaders and even-money title favourites Manchester United by six points having played a game more.

Carlo Ancelotti claimed afterwards his team could still finish first, but few seem to believe the Italian with theBlues on a quite dismal run of one win in eight league outings.

Chelsea are 10-3 not to finish in the top four with Ancelotti
5-1 to be thenext top-flight boss to lose his job after Ciaran Clark salvaged a point with a last-gasp equaliser to deny the Londoners.

It wasn’t just Villa fans elated by the equaliser as bookmakers reported a multi-million pound swing on the draw, with 2-7 Chelsea seen as the cornerstone of a weekend which saw Saturday's eight Premier League favourites all win.

Wigan lost 1-0 at home to Newcastle to continue the fascinating relegation battle which sees just seven points separate ninth from bottom.

Newcastle are up to tenth and  out to 15-2 to be relegated following the deserved success at the DW Stadium which came courtesy of a scrambled Shola Amoebi first-half goal.

Wigan remain one point outside of the drop-zone and can be backed at 11-10 to be relegated.

Villa cut for drop after Reds run riot

By Ian Wilkerson 1:39PM 7 DEC 2010 ASTON VILLA are 10-1 to be relegated from the Premier League this season after a dismal 3-0 defeat at Liverpool left Gerard Houllier's side just two points ahead of the drop zone.

Goals from David Ngog, Ryan Babel and Maxi Rodriguez left Villa facing a run of one win in their last ten league matches – and that was a late home success over a second-stringBlackpool side.

Villa have let in 13 goals in their last five matches and are evens to beat West Brom on Saturday.

Houllier is 40-1 to be the next Premier League manager to lose his job, having taken charge at Villa Park in September.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa preview- December 6

Liverpool vs Aston Villa

Barclays’ Premier League

Monday, December 6, 2010.

KO time- 20.00 UK time.

Gerard Houllier returns to the club he managed for six years between 1998 and 2004 when Aston Villa meet Liverpool at Anfield on Monday. Bet on Liverpool vs Aston Villa after reading preview with PaddyPower

Liverpool went down 2-1 to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend in the Premier League. Jamie Carragher suffered an injury in that game and has been ruled out for weeks, leaving Kygriakos and Skrtel as the only two established centre halves in Roy Hodgson’s side in the absence of the former and Daniel Agger.

Liverpool did draw with Steaua Bucharest away from home in the Europa League on Thursday. A goalkeeping error from Pepe Reina proved to be their undoing against Steaua as they gifted the Romanians an equalising goal.

Apart from Carragher, Liverpool will also be without Steven Gerrard for this game.

Liverpool form- last five games- most recent first- Liverpool scorers in brackets

Steaua Bucharest 1-1 Liverpool ( Milan Jovanovic)
Tottenham 2-1 Liverpool ( Martin Skrtel)
West Ham 0-3 Liverpool ( Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt, Maxi Rodriguez)
Stoke 2-0 Liverpool
Wigan 1-1 Liverpool ( Fernando Torres)

Aston Villa have been poor away from home this season. They lost 4-2 to Arsenal last weekend, a game in which they had a decent second half, but a poor first one. They were also eliminated from the Carling Cup by local rivals Birmingham City on Wednesday.

Ashley Young is suspended for Aston Villa. Scottish midfielder Barry Bannan is a doubt with his groin injury, leaving Villa with more problems in midfield as Steve Sidwell, Fabian Delph and Stiliyan Petrov are all long term absentees.

Arsenal face huge challenge at Villa

 Subscribe in a reader

Arsene Wenger and Gerard Houllier may well be good friends off the pitch, but if their friendship is to survive past this weekend, it may well require Arsenal (currently narrow favourites to win the game on odds comparison sites) to take all three points off Aston Villa.

With Wenger well aware that his side is just about hanging in there when it comes to this year’s bizarre title race, he knows that his team needs to come away from Villa Park having picked up the maximum points available. Should they fail to do this, Wenger will be aware that his side are going to struggle to be seen by football pundits as genuine contenders for the title.

However, after struggling to put together a top class performance in quite some time now, and having endured a difficult and ultimately unsuccessful trip to Portugal earlier in the week, they will need to pick themselves up quickly and start strongly if they are to stand a chance of defeating a Villa side which has been on the rise recently.

With the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Thomas Vermaelen still missing through injury, the onus is falling more and more on Samir Nasri to keep the Gunners firing. However, unless the likes of Theo Walcott and Van Persie start to show why the Gunners have spent big money on keeping them at the club with improved contracts, it’s difficult to see how the side can keep on picking up results.

This article has so far focused upon Arsenal’s strengths, or the lack of them. However, that is not to say that Villa won’t be able to upset the odds and have a big say on the result of the game, with the likes of Ashley Young desperate to show that they are worthy of a place in the England side, but with the stakes so high for the Gunners, Villa know that they will need to be at their best to keep the visitors at bay.

Villa hunt for goals

 Subscribe in a reader

Aston Villa again drew a blank in the Premier League as Gerard Houllier’s men finished the Birmingham derby with a point. The result was Villa’s third consecutive league game without scoring and will be the cause for concern amongst the club’s supporters. As it stands, Villa have only scored nine league goals this season and Houllier will need to address the issue if the club are going to have a chance of qualifying for Europe this season.

Emile Heskey is the club’s current top scorer with three goals but the former England striker is going through one of the barn door, banjo spells that he tends to go through. The big striker could have had a hat-trick against Birmingham but never really looked like scoring as he huffed and puffed in his lone role up front. Despite the obvious advantages gained when playing Heskey, Villa can’t rely on old Ivanhoe to supply the 15 plus goals needed to really threaten the top places in the Premiership.

John Carew did well when he came on but the Norwegian is similar to Heskey in his style of forward play; very useful in setting up chances but far from prolific when faced with the whites of the eyes of the keeper. Houllier will be hoping Gabby Agbonlahor recovers from his groin injury and rediscovers his form from last season when he scored 16 goals in all competitions.

It looks, according to those giving football betting advice, as though Houllier is going to have to recruit at least one striker in the January window and the rumours have already started. Houllier’s history with Michael Owen has resulted in the former England man being linked with a reunion, after finding himself down the pecking order at Old Trafford. As well as Owen, Robbie Keane’s name has been mentioned and this looks to be a very realistic prospect. The Irish striker is out of favour at Spurs and could be available for transfer in the New Year. Keane is exactly the sort of player Villa need if they are going to start progressing this season.

Villa Vs Chelsea Odds

With Chelsea riding high at the top of the Premier League and appearing untouchable for this season, can Aston Villa upset the apple cart this weekend? Villa are at home which will clearly give them a boost in the face of such tough competition and they are chasing a Top 4 spot in a bid to get into Europe next year.

Chelsea currently have 18 points, four ahead of their nearest rivals, Manchester City, who are on 14. Villa are on 10 points having only won two of there seven games so far this season so they’ve got a lot to prove and maybe this is the platform to do it.

Of course their main obstacle is going to be Didier Drogba and love him or loath him, he can definitely score a goal. He’s favourite to be this seasons top goalscorer to make it two years in a row but with Berbatov also having six goals under his belt he may have to work very hard to retain his crown!

Chelsea go into this weekends game as the bookies favourites but there are plenty of odds available on goalscorers and results for you to choose from.

Villa look for Houllier cup magic

Posted on September 20th, 2010 in English Premiership, FA Cup

After reaching the semi final of the FA Cup and the final of the Carling Cup last season, Aston Villa will be looking to go that extra step and be up there with the FA Cup odds to win this campaign.

In hiring Gerard Houllier as their new manager, Villa have a new boss with past success in English cup competitions. During his six years on Mersey side with Liverpool, Houllier won six trophies, including the Carling Cup twice and the FA Cup. That FA Cup triumph in 2001 will go down as the most famous of the wins though.

The final held at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, looked to be going Arsenal’s way as the clock reached 82 minutes, only for Michael Owen to pop up and equalise in the 83rd. After doing nothing all game, Owen again popped up with two minutes of normal time remaining to fire past David Seaman and give Liverpool the famous victory.

Villa fans and those looking at betting odds premier league wise will be hoping that the French manager can bring some of that success to Villa Park. Their Carling Cup final loss against Manchester United was a massive hammer blow to Martin O’Neill’s men. In a match they could easily have won after a James Milner penalty gave them an early lead.

The FA Cup defeat came in the semi final stage against eventual winners Chelsea. Villa defended like warriors and were unlucky to lose by such a heavy looking 3-0 score line. A Didier Drogba goal halfway through the second half gave Chelsea the advantage before late goals from Florent Malouda and Frank Lampard gave the score line an unfair look. The Villa Park faithful will be desperate for some silverware this year. It has been a long 14 years since their last trophy.

Soccer Betting – Villa Looks To The Champions League In 2010-11

 Subscribe in a reader

NCAA football betting players are preparing for their season, which begins in a few weeks, but the Premier League is getting ready to start this weekend, and Aston Villa opens up their campaign against West Ham at Villa Park.  Villa finished just outside of a Champions League spot last season, and they’ll be looking to build on a solid season.  However, it’s gotten off to a shaky start.

Villa heads into the 2010-11 season with basically the same side as last year, and they finished sixth with 64 points, six points behind fourth-place Tottenham.  Gaby Agbonlahor led the team with 13 goals in 37 matches, while John Carew notched 11 goals in 22 matches (11 of those appearances came as a sub).  James Milner played his way into a starting spot on England’s team in South Africa, although we saw how horribly out of place he was at a World Cup level.  Milner had seven goals and 12 assists from his central midfield role, which suited him far better than the wide role he stuck in for England.  Ashley Young provided pace up and down the right side, while Stewart Downing looks settled after moving from Middlesbrough.  At the back, Richard Dunne was immense after coming from Manchester City, even scoring his first goal for Villa against his old club.  Due to the defense of Dunne, James Collins, Stephen Warnock and Carlos Cuellar, along with keeper Brad Freidel, Villa was fourth in goals allowed last year, which made up for their lack of goal scoring.  NFL football betting players would compare this to the New York Jets, who had the best defense in the league last year, but had problems scoring points.  Villa gave up fewer goals than Tottenham and Manchester City, the two teams ahead of them in the table, but those two teams were also ahead of Villa in goals scored (Villa finished eighth in the Premiership in that category).
