Early on in the Premier League season when Chelsea were cruising and looked set to win the Premier League at a canter, their manager Carlo Ancelotti made the frank admission that his side were more interested in winning the Champions League this season rather than enjoying another triumph in the Premier League.

However, since then, the Blues have begun to be labelled an aging side that is not able to perform at the level achieved in recent years, something that has left them badly struggling to stay in contention in the Premier League title race this season and the Champions League best odds now indicate this could be their best shot at glory.

Despite this, the Blues know that Premier League form and Champions League form are two very different things and that a good performance in Europe can easily undermine any favourites tag in an instant. With the Blues looking forward to a relatively easy first round tie in the knockout stages against Danish minnows FC Copenhagen, they know that their real test to win their first Champions League crown will come during the latter stages of the competition when they meet the likes of Barcelona or Real Madrid and the Champions League predictions reflect this.

With the club’s owner Roman Abramovich having always stated that it is his desire to win big in Europe above all else, the Blues know that this may be the last time that several members of their squad are going to have a serious opportunity to win the famous competition. Add to this the fact that the final is at Wembley in London and you cannot argue that the Blues’ squad lacks the motivation required to finally end the record that says that no London club has ever won Europe’s top club competition.

Chelsea v Ipswich Preview

This is yet another game which has completely changed complexion over the weekend, following the news that Roy Keane has been relieved from his duties as Ipswich manager. It’s news that has certainly pleased the Tractor Boys faithful although opposition manager Carlo Ancelotti is another man feeling the strain, with his job under threat following some dreadful form over the past few weeks.

One of the big downsides of being in charge of one of the top clubs is that victories are expected every week, and if not pressure arrives. That has certainly been the case with Carlo Ancelotti as not so long ago his Chelsea side could do no wrong as they topped the Premier League. Recent form has been dire though and having won just one out of their last eight, they have slipped down the table and now sit in 5th. That leaves them nine points behind league leaders Manchester United and having also played a game more, it already looks as though their title ambitions are over. That perhaps means that they’ll put more emphasis on this fixture as Ancelotti bids to at least add some silverware to the Stamford Bridge trophy cabinet. What’s more, the Blues also know that should they win the competition this year, they will be the first club since 1886 to win three consecutive FA Cups.

Ipswich’s poor form has stretched back a little further than their opponents and the only question their supporters are posing is why Roy Keane wasn’t removed from his position earlier. The former Sunderland manager hasn’t been popular at Portman Road for a while, yet it was only on Friday that the board acted and supporters will be hoping for a fresh start now. As it stands, they sit in 19th spot in the Championship and looking back at recent form, they certainly won’t carry much confidence into this encounter. The Tractor Boys have lost seven games from their last ten and with their away record absolutely dismal, it’s certainly not looking promising as they travel to the current holders of the competition.

On the team news front, Chelsea have several worries ahead of this game and Carlo Ancelotti is preparing to put three players through late fitness tests. Michael Essien, Ashley Cole and Didier Drogba are all struggling with minor knocks and Ancelotti will leave it until late before making a decision. The visitors have a few definite absentees though, with Rory Fallon ineligible and Grant Leadbitter suspended. The Tractor Boys also won’t be relying on the services of Jack Colback, who returned to his parent club Sunderland earlier in the week.

Both of these sides are in poor form but we just can’t see past Chelsea here. Ipswich are in all sorts of turmoil and we just don’t think they’ve got what it takes to get anything out of this fixture

Chelsea will look to revive their rapidly disappearing title hopes when they take on bottom of the table Wolves at Molineux. Bet on Wolves vs Chelsea with PaddyPower after reading our betting preview.

Chelsea drew 3-3 with Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday. The Blues went ahead through a Frank Lamprd penalty but were hurtling towards defeat after Ashley Young and Emile Heskey had scored for the visitors. Late goals from Didier Drogba and John Terry seemed to have given them all three points but Ciaran Clark took advantage of some woeful marking to score a stoppage time equaliser for Villa.

Youngster Jeffrey Bruma, who started in defence alongside John Terry, is likely to make way for Branislav Ivanovic, who returns from suspension. Jose Bosingwa may also be chosen at right back ahead of Paulo Ferreira.

Frank Lampard and Michael Essien were not exactly at their best against Villa and will need to lift their game against Mick McCarthy’s side.

Wolves tasted defeat against fellow strugglers West Ham in their weekend clash, thus bringing Mick McCarthy’s side back to earth following their stunning win over Liverpool. The result also saw them slip back to the bottom of the league table.

Karl Henry and Michael Mancienne are the two main absentees for Wolves, who are also missing Kevin Doyle and Joey Craddock amongst others.

Sunday’s last Premier League clash sees Carlo Ancelotti’s out of form Chelsea take on Harry Redknapp’s Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.

Chelsea have struggled to reproduce the form that saw them race to the top of the Premier League early in the season. Carlo Ancelotti’s men are now third in the table with 30 points from 16 games. They have won only one of their last six games in all competitions and went down 1-0 to Olympique Marseille in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Spurs still have Niko Kranjcar and Rafael van der Vaart out, while Younes Kaboul will have a late fitness test. Jermaine Jenas, Tom Huddlestone, Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate continue to be long term absentees.

Here is an important fact- Chelsea have not won on their last four trips to White Hart Lane. Tottenham have won three of those fixture, with one game ending in a high scoring 4-4 draw.

Chelsea cut to retain Premier League crown

 By Dan Childs 2:21PM 11 NOV 2010 MICHAEL ESSIEN showed what Chelsea were missing at Anfield on Sunday by netting the only goal of last night’s 1-0 victory at home to Fulham but he is facing another period on the sidelines after picking up a red card in the dying moments.

RELATED LINKS Free bet Bet In-Play now  Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti restored Essien and Didier Drogba to the side and it was the Ghanaian’s 30th-minute goal that seperated the sides in a tense encounter at Stamford Bridge.

The victory was a welcome boost to Chelsea’s Premier League title hopes – they have been cut from 4-7 to 1-2 to retain their crown – but it was marred when Essien received a straight red card after a late challenge on Clint Dempsey.

Chelsea have extended their advantage to four points over second-placed Manchester United, who were held to a 0-0 draw in a disappointing clash with Manchester City at Eastlands.

United were the more progressive team for long periods, but after settling for a share of the spoils, their title odds were pushed out from 16-5 to 7-2 with Bet365.

Arsenal are just a point further back after a brace from Marouane Chamakh gave them a 2-0 success at Wolves.

The Gunners are 13-2 while the Citizens are 14-1.

West Ham missed the chance to move off the bottom after drawing 2-2 with West Brom at Upton Park and Wigan stay in the drop zone following their 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool.

The Hammers are evens for the drop with the Latics at 10-11 and Blackpool stillno bigger than 4-6.

Jermaine Beckford’s late goal rescued a 1-1 draw for Everton at home to Bolton and there were wins for Aston Villa – 3-2 at home to Blackpool – and Blackburn – 2-1 away to Newcastle.

Rangers retained a one-point lead at the top of ther SPL despite suffering a 3-0 loss at home to Hibernian.

Celtic also lost – 2-0 at Hearts – ensuring that both Old Firm clubs were defeated on the same day for the first time since May 20, 2007.

Victor Chandler can't split the Glasgow big guns at 10-11 but there is plenty of evens about the Bhoys.

Cardiff closed to within a point of QPR at the top of the Championship after drawing 1-1 at Reading.

The Bluebirds are a top-priced 5-2 with Stan James while the Rs are no bigger than 7-4 with Totesport.

Event: Champions League Group Play: Chelsea v. Spartak Moscow

As November begins, sports betting heats up with plenty of exciting sports and events for all sports fans. While those leagues are underway in North America, in Europe soccer leagues are in full swing, with the best football in the world on display.

The Champions League continues throughout Europe with group play in their second leg of the matchups, as teams try to make the top half of the tables to move on to the final 16. The top team in England, Chelsea, host Spartak Moscow in a battle of the top two teams in Group F. Not surprisingly, Chelsea sit at the top of the table in their tournament group with three victories over Moscow, Marseille, and MSK Zilina. In those games they have scored eight goals while allowing just one, and won two games on the road by a score of 6-1.

Away from the Champions League, the Blues sit atop the English Premier League standings with only one loss and one draw. Since a 1-0 road loss to Manchester City, they have won three and drawn one, continuing to rise up the table.

Meanwhile Spartak Moscow has a lone loss to Chelsea, and two wins over the other teams, scoring four goals and allowing two in that span. Unfortunately for Spartak, their loss to Chelsea was at hopme and now they take to the road, and they will be without some of their top players. Ari, who leads the team in the tourney with two goals, will be out for at least a couple weeks. As well, Parshivluk, has knee ligament damage and will be out for the rest of the year.

Still, a loss would not crush Spartak. They have six points to Marseille’s three, and Zilinia has yet to win or draw. As long as they don’t lose to either of the teams when they play them again, they will move on to the next round as the second spot in Group F. They simply look to stay competitive and keep up some momentum they have developed in the past weeks as they have won both their league games since their loss to Chelsea. Moreover, they are looking to once again qualify for another Champions League birth next season as they remain competitive this year.

Betting lines: Chelsea are the huge favourites and rightly so. This is as close as a lock as one can get in soccer. They are at home, they are healthy, they are playing well, and they are playing a team that is banged up and considerably less talented. Chelsea wins at home, and wins big.

Nobody likes revisiting the scene of any form of heartbreak or misery, particularly when the initial disappointment and the subsequent visit are there for all to see on global television channels.

However, it can actually turn out to be the best thing for an individual, or in this case a football team, to face the scene of past disappointment in the hope that it will finally bring closure.

Chelsea fans will hope that, after watching their team put on a professional if not scintillating performance in Moscow on a plastic pitch, their club has finally banished the memories of their 2008 Champions League final loss at the hands of Manchester United, which occurred at the same stadium in Moscow.

Although Carlo Ancelotti insisted that his players were not bothered by revisiting the scene of their defeat, with a cruel loss inflicted in the most bitter of fashions on penalties, even the composed Chelsea boss must be contemplating the potential long-term significance of his side’s 2-0 win, which came thanks to goals from the impressive Yuri Zhirkov and the in-form Nicolas Anelka.

Just a few years ago, those looking at Premiership betting prices regularly suggest that Chelsea may have crumbled under the pressures arising from a long away trip to Russia and the need to compete on an artificial pitch. However, in the match this week, they looked mentally resilient, physically determined, and rather like the kind of professional outfit capable of going the whole way in this season’s competition. After their win in Moscow, they need just a point to qualify for the next round and look very likely to top their group, something that Ancelotti has made a priority despite their comfortable position.

How Chelsea, and Roman Abramovich, who last night occupied the exact same seat he sat in during the ill-fated 2008 final, would love to banish for good any traces of Champions League disappointment by lifting the trophy next May at Wembley Stadium. On the basis of what we’ve seen from them so far this season in the competition, you wouldn’t want to bet against the Champions league prices suggesting this dream becoming a reality.

Villa are at home which will clearly give them a boost in the face of such tough competition and they are chasing a Top 4 spot in a bid to get into Europe next year.

Chelsea currently have 18 points, four ahead of their nearest rivals, Manchester City, who are on 14. Villa are on 10 points having only won two of there seven games so far this season so they’ve got a lot to prove and maybe this is the platform to do it.

Of course their main obstacle is going to be Didier Drogba and love him or loath him, he can definitely score a goal. He’s favourite to be this seasons top goalscorer to make it two years in a row but with Berbatov also having six goals under his belt he may have to work very hard to retain his crown!

Chelsea slip-up proves that they are human, nothing more

Although several high-profile football experts have suggested that Chelsea’s defeat to Manchester City last weekend is proof that the destination of the league title is anything but a dead cert, and that the champions are nothing but a load of flat track bullies only capable of destroying the lesser lights of the Premier League, this kind of talk should immediately be ignored, and then of course wheeled out come the end of the season to show these “experts” just how smart they really are. The Blues still look like Premier League best bets.

Sure, Chelsea lost to Manchester City last weekend, but they did the same last season, both home and away. So, basically, that means that Chelsea are 0/3 this season against City with regards to their potential points tally, which is exactly the statistic we saw after their first meeting last season. Isn’t it funny how they weren’t written off as a flat track bullying side back then after beating Arsenal and Manchester United at the Emirates and Old Trafford?

What this recent defeat does tell us, though, is that Chelsea are not quite the same machine that they were under old boss Jose Mourinho. Instead, this is a side that, although clearly fallible, is still by far and away the best team to back to be champions come the end of the campaign, with their free scoring style backed up by a very efficient defence.

The football predictions for the weekend suggest they will score another win when they face their London rivals Arsenal, leaving the Gunners almost out of the title race before we have even entered November, meaning that Manchester United are going to be their only contenders for the Premier League crown this season.

With Wayne Rooney out injured, and not in form when he has been available, United do not look to be a side capable of beating Chelsea, which of course means that the Blues’ defeat against Manchester City needs to be put in the correct perspective – Chelsea have suffered what can only be described as a minor slip-up as they march on inevitably towards the title.

The eyes of many football fans may be tempoarily distracted by the Ryder Cup this weekend, as golf’s biggest event takes centre stage from the Celtic Manor, but for Chelsea Football Club, all involved must ensure they are fully focused on this Sunday’s crucial match at Stamford Bridge.

Despite their slip up at home to West Brom last weekend, Arsenal are without question legitimate contenders for the 2010-11 Barclays Premier League title. After falling just short last season, the Gunners have added real quality in the likes of Laurent Koscielny and Marouane Chamakh to their squad and with influential captain Cesc Fabregas posied to return, it will be a huge test of Chelsea’s title credentials on Sunday.

As impressive as the start made by those in chelsea shirts was – the Blues won their opening five games with a goal difference of plus twenty – it could ultimately count for nothing if Arsenal head home to watch the closing stages of the Ryder Cup with three points under their belt.

Should that happen and Manchester United win at Sunderland the previous day, Chelsea would be top of the table only on goal difference and the emphatic nature of their opening victories would count for almost nothing.  The Blues must therefore ensure that they are on the top of their game and ensure that no slip up takes place.

My feeling is that Chelsea will win the game as the players will feel they have a point to prove. They didn’t get the respect their early form deserved with critics proclaiming that they “hadn’t been tested yet”, an accusation which was further supported with last weekends loss to Manchester City. In truth, it was a very poor performance with too many players not showing what they are capable of.

Worryingly for Arsenal, one such player was Didier Drogba. The last thing Arsene Wenger will be wanting is a fired up Ivorian with a point to prove as the Gunners have simply been unable to handle the hitman. I would back Drogba to score a double in a 3-1 Chelsea victory, a result which would see Arsenal fall 7 points behind their title rivals.

With the players then heading off on international duty with the Euro 2012 qualifiers taking centre stage, this would be a huge psychological strike in the title race. Arsenal would be no means out of the title race, but the early season optimism would be well and truly knocked out of them and it would take a lot of mental strength for them to haul themselves back into the mix.

Chelsea Vs Arsenal Odds

Sunday’s match against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge is set to be the first big encounter of the season for Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea side.

After a run of six successive victories to start their Premier League and Champions League campaigns in emphatic fashion, the Blues were knocked out of the Carling Cup following a 4-3 home defeat by Newcastle on 22 September.

Three days later, the west Londoners lost 1-0 at Manchester City, their first league loss since the same opposition beat them at Stamford Bridge on 27 February.

Despite that setback at Eastlands, Ancelotti’s men remain top of the Premier League table, three points clear of second-place Manchester United and four points ahead of Arsenal, who are third. Kick off is 4.00 o’clock on sunday and the match is screened live on SkySports.
