Villa look for Houllier cup magic

Posted on September 20th, 2010 in English Premiership, FA Cup

After reaching the semi final of the FA Cup and the final of the Carling Cup last season, Aston Villa will be looking to go that extra step and be up there with the FA Cup odds to win this campaign.

In hiring Gerard Houllier as their new manager, Villa have a new boss with past success in English cup competitions. During his six years on Mersey side with Liverpool, Houllier won six trophies, including the Carling Cup twice and the FA Cup. That FA Cup triumph in 2001 will go down as the most famous of the wins though.

The final held at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, looked to be going Arsenal’s way as the clock reached 82 minutes, only for Michael Owen to pop up and equalise in the 83rd. After doing nothing all game, Owen again popped up with two minutes of normal time remaining to fire past David Seaman and give Liverpool the famous victory.

Villa fans and those looking at betting odds premier league wise will be hoping that the French manager can bring some of that success to Villa Park. Their Carling Cup final loss against Manchester United was a massive hammer blow to Martin O’Neill’s men. In a match they could easily have won after a James Milner penalty gave them an early lead.

The FA Cup defeat came in the semi final stage against eventual winners Chelsea. Villa defended like warriors and were unlucky to lose by such a heavy looking 3-0 score line. A Didier Drogba goal halfway through the second half gave Chelsea the advantage before late goals from Florent Malouda and Frank Lampard gave the score line an unfair look. The Villa Park faithful will be desperate for some silverware this year. It has been a long 14 years since their last trophy.
