Newcastle vs Liverpool preview

Game :- Newcastle vs Liverpool ( December 10, 2010 at St.James Park, KO 17.30 UK time)

Alan Pardew’s first game as Newcastle manager after the sacking of fans favourite Chris Houghton sees the Magpies host Liverpool in the last Premier League kickoff on Saturday.

Will Alan Pardew be victorious in his first match as Liverpool manager? Bet on Newcastle vs Liverpool with our betting partners and find out.

Newcastle put in a listless performance against West Bromwich Albion last weekend, leading to the board showing Chris Hughton the exit. The players have not been too pleased with Mike Ashley’s decision and some, like Sol Campbell, have spoken against the decision.

Mike Williamson and Fabricio Coloccini are suspended for Newcastle.

However there is good news as skipper Kevin Nolan has made significant progress on his ankle injury, but Joey Barton will be given a late fitness test for his groin problem.

Newcastle form- last five games- most recent first- Newcastle scorers in brackets-

West Brom 3-1 Newcastle ( Peter Lovenkrands)
Newcastle 1-1 Chelsea ( Andy Carroll)
Bolton 5-1 Newcastle ( Andy Carroll)
Newcastle 0-0 Fulham
Newcastle 1-2 Fulham ( Andy Carroll)

Andy Carroll will again be vital to Newcastle’s fortunes, especially against a Liverpool defence missing Daniel Agger and Jamie Carragher.

Liverpool beat a poor Aston Villa side 3-0 on Monday despite missing star trio Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher. Torres will be back for this weekend’s game, which however comes too early for both Gerrard and Carragher.

Liverpool are 8th in the table with 22 points from 16 games, while Newcastle are in 12th position with 19 points from the same number of fixtures.

Liverpool form- last five games- most recent first- Liverpool scorers in brackets

Liverpool 3-0 Aston Villa ( David Ngog, Ryan Babel, Maxi Rodriguez)
Steaua Bucharest 1-1 Liverpool ( Milan Jovanovic)
Tottenham 2-1 Liverpool ( Martin Skrtel)
West Ham 0-3 Liverpool ( Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt, Maxi Rodriguez)
Stoke 2-0 Liverpool

Verdict:- Liverpool have won only once away all season in the league. While Newcastle’s league form at home has not been the best, Alan Pardew will be keen to get a favourable result.

Newcastle United 2-2 Liverpool ( Carroll, Nolan/ Torres, Ngog)

Newcastle – the Premier League’s least surprising surprise package

No one could have possibly predicted the phenomenal start to the season they are currently enjoying.

Despite their home loss to Blackburn this week they remain fifth and fans could be forgiven dreaming of a European place come May.

This is a topsy-turvy season with everyone taking points off each other, regardless of financial muscle, history or reputation, and as such, it would be almost fitting that the most colourful of English teams should flourish in this environment.

But it isn’t a freak run of results which has propelled the Magpies to the position they are in, it was a combination of graft and guile and they look good Premier League bets to stay up.

In Chris Hughton they have a manager who is keeping everyone’s feet on the ground, while at the same time reminding his players that they are all worthy of their place in the most competitive and exciting league in the world.

He has masterminded victories over Arsenal, Aston Villa and arch-rivals Sunderland, melding measured aggression with skill. The success has been built on a strong defensive backbone, rather than the approach of simply outscoring the opposition adopted by former manager Kevin Keegan.

In Tim Krul, they have a young keeper with a bright future, and he has been ably assisted by a back four which has been disciplined and controlled, even against the stiffest of opposition – as Wenger’s side found out last week.

Midfielders Kevin Nolan and Joey Barton have set the tone in midfield giving both support to their defence as well as service to their an attack which has been ably spear-headed by young Andy Carroll. Despite problems off the pitch, a full international call up can’t be too far away, and based on his performances this season, would be well-deserved.

Newcastle just need to concentrate on the games ahead of them and ensure their good work isn’t undone.

Meanwhile, the Hull City betting suggests they should be able to stabilise their position in the Championship after they were taken over.

However, it could be several seasons before they come close to returning to the Premier League.

Roomies give Newcastle the win

 Subscribe in a reader

There was probably a very enjoyable game of Monopoly in the Nolan household on Saturday night after Kevin and his new housemate Andy Carroll scored the goals that gave Newcastle an impressive away win at West Ham. After Carlton Cole had given the struggling Hammers an early lead after 12 minutes, Nolan and Carroll linked up nicely allowing the captain to lash home the equaliser. Carroll then grabbed the winner with 20 minutes left on the clock, through a powerful header following good work from Joey Barton.

Carroll has been forced to move in with his captain as part of his bail conditions regarding a new assault allegation, the strikers third such charge in as many years. If the two keep performing as well together as they did at Upton Park then Chris Hughton may enquire about the possibility of Carroll bunking up for good at the Nolan’s.

Hughton is going through his own issues despite bringing success to the club, in what is one of the most pressurised jobs around. The manager’s contract will expire at the end of the season and so far there has been no sign of a new one being offered anytime soon. It might be a good football betting tip to suggest that the club do decide to go after a big name to take over from Hughton. Something which would be rather harsh.

The win took the Geordies into the top half of the table and into ninth place following their promotion back into the top flight. With the Tyne-Wear derby coming around next weekend, the win will give Hughton’s side confidence going into the match against seventh placed Sunderland.

The Black Cats will probably go into the match as slight favourites with soccer betting odds due to their seven match unbeaten run extending last weekend with a 1-0 win over Aston Villa. Newcastle will be confident of giving their home fans something to cheer about though.

Newcastle expects

 Subscribe in a reader

Newcastle will be different from most teams who gain promotion to the Premiership. Merely avoiding relegation won’t be enough for Chris Hughton’s team. Newcastle fans will be expecting their team to cement themselves as a force of English football once again. After romping to the Championship League title last season, Newcastle will be looking to take that confidence into this campaign. They won the title by eleven points after dominating from start to finish.

How many of the current squad that can compete in the top flight remains to be seen however. Those looking at football betting picks are certainly not convinced.

Newcastle have only brought in James Perch from Nottingham Forrest so far this summer. They will need to strengthen if they are to challenge in the top flight again. Owner Mike Ashley has made it clear that the transfer kitty is hardly bursting with funds. One way to raise funds could be to sell their best players, not something Hughton will be wanting.

Andy Carroll finished last season as his team’s top scorer on 19 goals. Stoke and Birmingham have reportedly shown interest in the six foot three front-man. Carroll has made it clear he isn’t seeking a move from the North-East and remains loyal to his boyhood team. Another player who has pledged his future to Newcastle is Jonas Gutierrez. The midfielder played at this summer’s World Cup for Argentina and Lazio were said to be sniffing around the player.

Those who give football betting advice suggest that Newcastle’s main player this season could be Kevin Nolan, the midfielder was one of the best players in the Championship last season. Along with his vast Premiership experience, he has the ability to be a match winner on his day. He will be crucial to Newcastle’s chances as Premiership football returns to the Geordies.
