Spurs Champion League Odds

For the first time in their club’s history, Tottenham Hotspurs are in the quarter final of the Champions League and there opposition is none other than Real Madrid! To make matters even more tricky, Ronaldo has been cleared to play and will line-up with the rest of his team mates as they set up to upset the Spurs party.

An upbeat Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp says his side are “very confident and very optimistic they can do the job”. He said, “I don’t feel pressure. No-one expected us to be here at here at the start of the season and we have a big chance of winning, we’re not just coming here to turn up, we want to keep progressing.”

So far Tottenham have enjoyed a dream first season in Europe’s elite competition, coming top of their group which included holders Inter Milan, Werder Bremen and FC Twente, and then knocking out AC Milan without conceding a goal over two legs and with Gareth bale back from injury and all fired up, Spurs should be ready to put up the fit of their lives if they want to see off Real and head through to the semi-final!

Welsh Champion Hurdle Preview

Welcome to Ffos Las!

Less than two years after becoming Britain’s first new turf racecourse to open in more than seventy years, Ffos Las hosts the inaugural William Hill Welsh Champion hurdle tomorrow.  This represents the biggest day in the Carmarthenshire racecourse’s short history, writes Paul Moon.

You will not find Ffos Las (blue ditch) on any map as there is no such place: it lies between the old mining villages of Trimsaran and Carway and was named after the farm that once occupied the site.  Twelve years ago the course was the deepest coal mine in Europe!

The Welsh Champion Hurdle has been revived and given the kiss of life by Ffos Las Racecourse.  Before its deterioration this was a listed event run at Chepstow, but for whatever reason the administration there allowed the race to wither then perish.  It became an ordinary Class 2 handicap giving rise to greater quantity at the expense of quality!  At its new venue, it is to be hoped that the race’s former eminence and lustre will be restored with added relevance and value, seeing as the timing will now render this a meaningful Cheltenham Champion Hurdle trial.

Ffos Las is ideally equipped to stage the Welsh Champion Hurdle, and has a determination to increase its appeal.   After losing the race last year because of freezing weather conditions everything looks set fair for tomorrow at 2:40, when a select quintet of runners will take their chances.  Belatedly and to add a bit of glamour, Channel 4 will make their first ever live visit to the track.

Speaking to Public Relations Manager, Kate Miller of William Hill, during the week, she told us:

Master Minded still the one to beat in Champion Chase

Master Minded can still win the Champion Chase

Master Minded fans may have had a shock on Saturday, when the Victor Chandler winner’s lead was diminished to a disintegrating short head by the line, but the Paul Nicholls-trained eight year old is still the one to beat in the Champion Chase come March. Or so I reckon.

Let’s consider the facts. Firstly,  Master Minded won the race. Okay, he looked like he’d win by as far as he liked after Petit Robin fell and severely hampered Kalahari King (more on those two in a moment). Granted, he was all out to prevail by the narrowest of margins as they smiled for the photo finish. And of course, Somersby would have won in another stride.

But the Ascot race is a furlong further than the Cheltenham race. And the ground on Saturday was on the soft side of good, which it is unlikely to be come March. Master Minded is probably losing a yard of that brilliant speed he possessed earlier in his career (indeed one idiot on here – me, I think it was – suggested he might be a throwaway bet for the Gold Cup. Suffice it to say, I’ve thrown away that throwaway voucher!). For all that, he retains plenty and, bar the second horse, the remainder were seen off by twenty lengths and more.

The runner-up Somersby is both consistent and frustrating. Consistently frustrating, one might say, if one keeps backing him. Clearly, he has huge talent, as podium positions in five consecutive Grade 1 and 2 contests testify. As a reliable punting proposition, he’s a swerve for me though. I mean, even his trainer doesn’t know what trip he wants and reckons he’s a monkey… sorry, I mean a difficult horse to ride and train.

She, Henrietta Knight – trainer of Best Mate and Edredon Bleu, no less – said, “I was really pleased with him as he is not the easiest horse. We were so sure that we wanted the Ryanair but after today’s performance he showed that he is still able to hold his own at two miles so we might go for the Ryanair next year now.”

In other words, we don’t know what trip he wants and he’s a bloody nightmare to train. That is of course excessively harsh, but where my equine investments are concerned, I’m generally looking for a combination of greater certainty about ideal conditions and a bigger price than the 10/1 which is the best of the bookies’ odds.

Mad Max was third, and well beaten, seemingly without excuses. 40/1 for the Champion Chase is about right, I’d say, though again it wouldn’t tempt me. I can’t see how he could possibly reverse this form, and a place is as good as it can get for this chap.

Menorah Set For Champion Hurdle

Philip Hobbs has confirmed that his stable star Menorah will not run again before his bid to land the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival on March 15, writes Elliot Slater.

The winner of last season’s Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham, Menorah went on to only narrowly fail to complete a Festival double when beaten a neck by General Miller in a memorable finish to the Grade 2 John Smith’s Mersey Novices’ Hurdle. Despite showing such high-class form there were still plenty of people sceptical that the King’s Theatre gelding would make a successful transition into the big hurdling league, but anyone who needed convincing knew for sure that here is a fine talent when Hobbs’ charge carried top weight of 11-12 against smart opposition and bravely outpointed his rivals to land the Grade 3 Greatwood Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham in November on his seasonal reappearance.

Bookmakers reacted quickly by elevating Menorah to prominence in the ante-post list for the Champion Hurdle, a position he strengthened considerably when memorably beating the smart pair of Cue Card and Silviniaco Conti back at Cheltenham in the Grade 2 International Hurdle last month and is he shaping up to be one of the hottest Cheltenham 2011 tips around.

Hobbs has always held Menorah in high regard and already speaks of him in the same terms as his 2003 Champion Hurdle winner Rooster Booster, and the decision has been taken to give owner Diana Whateley’s pride and joy a mid-season break and bring him back fresh and raring to go on decent ground at the Cheltenham Festival in March. Anyone looking for value for the Festival should remember there’s more to life than just Gold Cup betting, and Menorah is worth more than just a glance.

Testing underfoot conditions don’t ideally suit Menorah so the decision was made much easier in light of the bog-like conditions that currently prevail, and could be set to stay for some time. A best priced 9/2 shot, Menorah is currently a general second favourite for the hurdling crown behind 4/1 shot Hurricane Fly.

Video Post: Champion Hurdle 2011 / Apprentice Required

Posted by Matt Bisogno on November 17, 2010 · Leave a Comment

And now, dear reader, for something completely different… Actually, not quite as surreal as a Monty Python sketch, but today – for a change – I’ve recorded a little video for you. It comes in two parts, largely in recognition of the fact that some people will be more interested in one part than the other…!

So… part one is an update on the Champion Hurdle 2011 picture, along with my views – and my bets – on the race to date. That one is directly below this waffle… and part two is me reaching out to the Geegeez community and asking, “Do you want to work with me?”. I’m looking for an apprentice, and this is a paid position for the right person.. details in the second video below.

Adam Beschizza, Champion Apprentice Elect Interview

Adam Beschizza: Fighting out the Champion Apprentice title this season

Who is the odd one out from Martin Lane, John Fahy and Adam Beschizza? All three jockeys are currently in a nail-biting battle to win this season’s apprentice championship, yet one of them can boast of a remarkable achievement.

The last-named rider has become a punters’ favourite this year with his reliability when on board favourites and his strength against more experienced jockeys yet, remarkably, unlike the rest of his championship rivals, he is only in his first full season with a licence.

Born and bred in Newmarket, 18-year old Beschizza (pronounced

Champion trip shouldn't hinder Poet's Voice - Crisford

By Racing Post Staff 11:49AM 15 OCT 2010 POET'S VOICE will step up to 1m2f for the first time as he bids to give Godolphin their first victory in the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes, with connections hopeful that the longer trip will not prevent Dubawi landing consecutive Group 1 victories.

RELATED LINKS Champion card Champion betting Dewhurst card Dewhurst betting  The three-year-old was supplemented for the race after his nose defeat of Rip Van Winkle in the Sony-backed Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot, and will be racing beyond a mile for the first time. However, racing manager Simom Crisford believes the colt should be able to handle the extra distance.

Speaking on At The Races, Crisford said: "We're not over confident, but this is a necessary step as he stays in training next year and we need to find out if he stays the trip.

"Having said that, he's been very switched off at home and at Ascot and Salisbury, which is in his favour, and on paper there's no reason why he shouldn't stay. If he's good enough the trip should be no problem."

Crisford played down the chance of the unbeaten Saamidd, who will take on the top-class pair of Frankel and Dream Ahead in the Dubai Dewhurst.

He said: "We can't wait, it's a massive race. We're chalked up as third favourite and that's realistic. He's still got plenty to prove and is a bit lazy at home. This is going to be a step up and he will have to step up to beat Frankel and Dream Ahead."

Champion Title jockey Paul Hanagan has been booked for what is very likely his most important undertaking of his career to date, picking up the ride one double Classic victor Snow Fairy in the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes on Saturday at Newmarket, depending on whether she starts in the feature event.
