Sajjhaa Targets Windsor Forest Stakes

Godolphin’s Sajjhaa delighted connections with a fine run at York last week when finishing a highly creditable runner-up to the outstanding mare Midday in the Group 2 Middleton Stakes and could next be seen at Royal Ascot in June where she has a number of entries at the five-day showcase fixture, writes Elliot Slater.

Trained until the start of this term by the now retired Michael Jarvis, the daughter of King’s Best ran above most expectations on the Knavesmire, leading until the furlong pole under Frankie Dettori before Midday came by to score by two-lengths. Such an effort on her seasonal reappearance suggests that the Saeed bin Suroor-trained filly has done very well indeed from three to four and could be worth following this term, even if you usually just keep an eye on the Epsom Derby betting.

Bin Suroor has been fulsome in his praise of Sajjhaa who he expected to come on plenty for her York run and whose effort against a high-class international performer clearly exceeded expectations. She has a number of Royal Ascot entries, including in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes, but it seems most likely that she will be kept to competing against her own sex and tackle the Group 2 Windsor Forest Stakes having returned from the Knavesmire in fine form and is understood to be very much pleasing connections. Those tracking the Royal Ascot betting should bear this in mind.

Last term Sajjhaa won in listed company at Bath in August before being beaten just a nose by Aspectoflove in a competitive listed handicap at Ascot’s QEII fixture a month later. She then excelled when putting in a much improved display to reverse the form with Aspectoflove in beating that rival a length-and-a-half in the Group 3 Premio Sergio Cumani at San Siro in October.

2011 Preakness Stakes Post Draw Results

By Robert Ferringo

The 2011 Preakness Stakes post draw was just announced by Pimlico Race Horse officials, and the field for the 136th Preakness Stakes is set.

The 2011 Preakness will be run at 6 p.m. EST on Saturday, May 21 at Pimlico. This is the second round of the Triple Crown.

Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom drew the No. 11 post for Saturday. Animal Kingdom raced from the No. 16 post at the Derby, so starting from the outside hasn’t really bothered this stalking horse. Derby favorite (and eighth place finisher) Dialed In will race from the No. 10 slot, while third-place Derby finisher Mucho Macho Man will race in the No. 9 position.

Frankel Lives Up To Expectations in Dewhurst Stakes

Justifying his race favouritism, the Henry Cecil trained Frankel showed he merited the trainer’s high praise, with a decisive victory in the Dubai Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket, under the guidance of jockey Tom Queally.

Dewhurst Stakes 2010 Preview

Posted by Matt Bisogno on October 15, 2010 · Leave a Comment

It’s questions and answers today, dear reader, as we ponder the Dewhurst and seek to learn more about what you think.

First up, let’s take a look at the Dewhurst, like so many other sites already seem to have, and consider whether this really will be the Master Butcher of two year old reputations (and whether that really was the most shoehorned punchline in the history of the Geegeez blog..!)

Lies, damn lies and statistics are about to be blended in a great big metaphorical Moulinex with speed figures, form ratings and anything else I can grab to hand, with the possible exception of the mug of Lemsip I’m currently drinking.

So what of the histowical twends (as Elmer Fudd or Jonathan Ross might have said)?

A key stat of convenience – and one upon which I want to focus – is this: seven of the last nine winners of the Dewhurst had raced four or more times prior to showing up at the Newmarket showpiece. Frankel hasn’t. Nor has Dream Ahead. Oh, and nor has Saamidd.

Here’s another convenient, and possibly hard to ignore stat. Four of the last eight winners were priced at 20/1 or bigger.

Does this mean Frankel, Dream Ahead or Saamidd won’t win? Emphatically, and – I hope – obviously, NO! But it does mean that we have just cause to seek ‘value’ somewhere else.

In 2008, Rip Van Winkle was bashed out of sight here at 6/4. When Sir Percy won in 2005, he beat the 8/11 shot Horatio Nelson. In 2003, Three Valleys was just seen off at 11/4 with Haafhd further back. In 2002, Trade Fair suffered a similar reverse at short odds.

Now it’s also true that this is the smallest Dewhurst Stakes for many a long year. Does that mean we’re more or less likely to get a shock result? Erm, I don’t know. But it could well become a tactical affair with a sprint finish. With none of the big trainers seeing fit to field a pacemaker, who will cut out the donkey work?

From a pace angle, I suspect Waiter’s Dream and Roderic O’Connor are most likely to take it on early… at least that’s what the form in the book implies of their running styles. With a quartet of smart horses behind, either of these will have to be very talented to maintain the lead and prevail. It doesn’t mean it won’t happen, but I suspect these two will be spent if they adopt pace pressing tictacs.

On class, it’s tough to choose between Frankel, Dream Ahead and Saamidd, all of whom have been hugely impressive in their collective eight race unbeaten streak.

Frankel is the one who might be tested the most if the early gallop is strong, as his two most recent and most facile victories have seen him employ a truly devastating burst of speed off a funereal early gallop. His debut run, where experience was against him of course, was a much more battling half length verdict over Nathaniel, who was beaten again next time.

In fairness, the form of that race has worked out well, and his pulverizing of four moderate rivals last time is performance he couldn’t really have made more eye-catching.

But. But… on form in the book, he’s not met a rival as strong as… well as the worst horse in this race. His highest rated rival to date was 101. Waiter’s Dream, the worst in here with an official figure, is rated 109.

None of this means Frankel won’t win, far less he can’t win. It simply means you’re betting odds on that he beats better horses than he’s so far faced. Of course, he’s capable of doing that. But I will always look elsewhere for a bet in races like these.

So what of the rest? Well, Saamidd is fairly closely tied in with Waiter’s Dream on their Champagne Stakes running, albeit that the former won that race with 2 3/4 lengths back to the latter. That was unquestionably a stronger field than anything Frankel has faced, but it doesn’t necessarily mean I’m more of a Saamidd fan.

Racing NSW desperation stakes fails again

Racing NSW, the administrators of what should be the strongest racing in Australia, have shot themselves in the foot yet again as they desperately try to patch up the damage they have caused through pigheadedness and sheer incompetence over the past couple of decades.

Merging racing clubs is the latest buzz strategy in Australian racing - the two metropolitan race clubs in Brisbane were able to do it (purely logical considering the two racecourses were literally across the road from each other), so NSW thought they should follow suit. It gets complicated though because the AJC (Australian Jockey Club) think their shit doesn't stink and any form of 'merger' with the STC (Sydney Turf Club) would reek of a takeover. Amazingly, the AJC members all voted for the merger, as all the benefits would go to them, a $150m grandstand at Randwick. No surprise when the STC voted against the move because of concerns about one of their tracks, Canterbury, being sold off, and worries about key races at Rosehill being moved to Randwick to justify the new bohemiath of a grandstand.

The funniest part though is where the money was supposed to come from. NSW racing is broke. Peter V'Landys and his team of buffoons at Racing NSW are pissing away the lot in court fighting battles which just a basic understanding of competition laws tells you they can't possibly win. So rather than being funded by profits from racing, or from a government grant, the funding for this lavish new grandstand (designed to bring the crowds back to racing) has been posted by TABCorp, a supposedly independent body, in return for selling off their share of the profits in a virtual racing game, Trackside - which will encourage people to stay away from the track and bet on cartoons....

Trackside Bid Runs Off The Rails

The vote last night by Sydney Turf Club members against a merger with the Australian Jockey Club represents the latest in a string of calamities bedeviling the "crash through or crash" management of the industry by Racing NSW.

Characterised by an almost embarrassing subservience to the wishes of TabCorp and ignoring the requirement to consider the public interest set down in the Racing Administration Act, Racing NSW has been brought to account by a handful of STC members who basically said "we've had enough of this stupidity".

Two years ago we saw the race fields debacle unfold.

It wasn't enough for Racing NSW to bring in a payment arrangement for corporate bookmakers, Betfair and interstate TAB's. In collusion with TabCorp the race fields levy system was tricked up to put low margin operators out of business.

While the final appeal judgment is not yet to hand, the outcome is sufficiently uncertain that Racing NSW has had to go searching for a new pot of gold in the meantime.

If you have any interest in this issue, read the full story from Cyberhorse. It's unbelievable that a government-appointed racing body can be so arrogant and naive to think they can get away with such conduct, and outrageous that the government lets them get away with it....Posted byScott Fergusonat09:13

The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes winner had been under consideration for the Breeders’ Cup Mile, for which he was second-favourite behind Goldikova.

"We also feel that ten furlongs could be the best trip for him now that he is settled so well andit is possible that a sharp mile around two bends could work against him."

Stan James reacted to the news by inserting Poet's Voice into the betting forthe Champion Stakes at 6-1 and easing favourite Twice Over to 7-2 (from 3).

Simcock Dreams Ahead to Middle Park Stakes

Posted by Leigh on September 30, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Trainer David Simcock is looking forward to the prospect of more rain at the Newmarket track, which has been forecast on Friday, making the conditions more testing for some, but suitable for his star charge Dream Ahead when attempting victory in the Shadwell Middle Park Stakes.
