Premiership Relegation Battle The Most Exciting Ever According To Odds

Not only is this season’s Premiership title race and the Champions League qualification race more open than ever before, we are also looking at what is probably the most open relegation battle ever in the Premiership.

The bottom half of the Premiership are currently separated by just seven points and all the teams in the bottom half are within at least five points of the relegation zone, meaning that very few teams consider themselves safe with just over ten games to go this season. According to the table it is Blackburn and Blackpool who are the safest of the bottom half teams but Blackpool are still far from safe despite their win over Spurs during the week, Blackpool are deemed fifth favourites to go down with the bookies and can be backed at 3/1.

According to the bookies the bottom four at the end of the season will feature all the W’s, who are the four teams that make up the current bottom four. West Brom are most likely to survive, they are 5/4 to go down with the current bottom three expected to remain there, all three of the bottom three are odds on to go down.

Wigan and West Ham are most likely to finish bottom, both teams are 8/15 to be relegated and around 11/4 to be rock bottom. That just leaves Wolves who are likely to make up the numbers in the bottom three according to the current Premiership relegation odds, they are 4/5 to do down this season.

The other team who could still be in trouble according to the latest odds are Birmingham, some good recent form has seen them move three points clear of the relegation zone with a game in hand over most of their rivals and they are probably safe now at 4/1 to go down. The likes of Aston Villa and Everton are still very close to the relegation zone but both are clearly expected to survive given their odds to go down of 16/1 and 22/1 respectively. With Premiership matches coming thick and fast the relegation odds are changing dramatically each week, we could have three new favourites to go down in a few weeks time.

Schalke and Lyon battle it out for top spot

Group B will have a much clearer look about it after this week’s matches. Lyon are currently top of the tree but are only two points clear of this week’s opponents FC Schalke 04, so nothing is decided when it comes to the Champions league betting odds in this group.

Two wins and a draw so far in the group stage have left Schalke on seven points and in second position. The German side will be fully aware that a win against Lyon would take them above the French club and into the driving seat for the top spot.

Schalke’s European campaign has been going a good deal better than their domestic one. Their form has been patchy to say the least and Schalke are currently treading water in 15th, although they did find their form this weekend when they ran out comfortable 4-0 winners against Werder Bremen.

Those betting on champions league matches note that Lyon will be without their captain for this week’s tie after Cris suffered a swollen tendon in his knee in their weekend victory over Nice and will sit out the Schalke game. Lyon’s three game winning streak came to abrupt end in the 4-3 defeat to Benfica in their last match, putting an end to their hopes of finishing the group stage unbeaten.

The French club will probably still go into the tie as slight favourites despite Schalke having the home advantage. Lyon scrapped a narrow 1-0 home victory over Schalke earlier in the group stages and will be out to record the double over their German hosts in their bid to finish top of their group for the first time since the 05/06 season.

Relegation battle baffling punters and bookies alike

With Blackpool currently riding high in the Premier League, and Liverpool occupying one of the relegation positions, punters and bookies could well be forgiven for scratching their heads in wonder as to which team they should be backing to be one of the unfortunate three that will not be playing Premier League football next season.

Even though minnows Blackpool have enjoyed a fantastic start to the season, bookies have failed to react and the Seasiders are still a very short price to spend just one season in the Premier League. With this in mind, punters looking to put football bets on Blackpool may well be wiser having a look at their final league position, rather than simply betting that they are going to be relegated.

One bet which rival fans might enjoy getting involved with is backing Liverpool to complete their fall from grace by joining the likes of Cardiff City in the Championship next season, an occurrence that, despite all the troubles both on and off the pitch at Anfield, bookmakers still believe is an unlikely scenario, which therefore leaves betting fans with some rather tempting odds, even if they are not Premier League tips for relegation.

With the likes of Wigan and Wolves still not presenting punters with great odds for failing to avoid the drop, one side that does hold a far greater appeal, and also offers a reasonable chance of punters seeing a return on their money, is Newcastle United. Although they’ve started the season well enough, they are yet to convince bookies that they are not one of the likeliest sides to be relegated.
