United out to improve

Sir Alex Ferguson will be hoping his Manchester United side will announce themselves in this season’s Champions League with a confident display next week when they play host to current Turkish champions Bursaspor. They have looked far from their best in their opening two games, drawing against Rangers before a late Javier Hernandez winner gave United the victory over Valencia.

Bursaspor won last season’s Super Lig, only three seasons after they were promoted to the top flight. The Turks were handed a harsh lesson in European football in their opening Group C match against Valencia. The Spanish giants totally outclassed Bursaspor and could have scored more than the four they did.

The Turks would have been looking at Rangers as their main rivals in this group. The Champions League predictions hint the top two places are probably already sewn up by Valencia and United, so Bursaspor will battle it out with Rangers for who finishes third and qualifies for the Europa League. The Glasgow club looked stronger than in previous seasons and edged a 1-0 victory to give them the win, meaning Rangers are now Champions League betting tips to finish third.

After such a morale boosting late victory over Valencia in their last game, Fergie will be hoping to take that confidence into their match against Bursaspor. Wayne Rooney will probably return to the first team after his injury lay-off after playing for England this week. He still looks far from his best however, and has only found the back of the net once for United this season. A couple of goals against Bursaspor would give Rooney a much needed boost, which could kick start his season.
