Aldebaran Park Freestone Trotters Cup, Tabcorp Park, Melton, Friday

The trotters get a chance to strut their stuff for big cash on Friday at Tabcorp Park, Melton, in the $20,000 Aldebaran Park Freestone Trotter’s Cup. This Group 3 contest has attracted what looks like a highly competitive field of 13 and no doubt will be a real cavalry charge from gate to wire.

Lance Justice’s Earl Of Mot NZ can slot in from 2 on the second line behind the leaders and surely play a hand if the gaps appear. The seven-year-old is a regular in this company and rarely disgraces himself as his career total prize-money surpasses the $2.5m barrier. He has won two of his last three races, one of those here at Tabcorp Park where he ran a sub two minute mile, one of the best times on offer. He likes a mobile start also and is a nap selection.

A threat could come from J L Douglas’s Shiraz Cabernet, who has a great draw in G1. The horse was running well in this sort of company at the beginning of the summer, finishing out of the first three only once in eight starts since May. He has been given a break by connections since the end of June and so will be coming here fresh. It is worth noting, though, that by looking at his past he hasn’t had an overly inspiring record first time out, although since his 2010 campaign has become a much improved individual and could possibly overcome that alarming stat here. The fact that he mostly races from a stand-start as well should not put people off as he has shown good form from starting with the mobile in his younger days, so he can do it!

To sum up, in the harness racing betting odds, we will side with Earl Of Mot NZ, who should go very close if maintaining his high level of form and, in what looks to be a competitive race on paper, may return at a fairly juicy SP. Make sure you keep a close eye on the harness racing results after the exciting action!
