Since Federer and Nadal assumed control of the male rankings in 2003, WTA tour betting pundits note that there have been five women who have become world number one without winning a Grand Slam title. Caroline Wozniacki is the latest player to achieve this bitter-sweet honour and will be as desperate as Kim Clijsters, Amelie Mauresmo, Jelena Jankovic and Dinara Safina to open her major account.
Clijsters and Mauresmo of course did so in style by becoming multiple Slam winners and it is difficult to envisage the 20-year old Dane failing to do the same. Her rise to the top has been rapid but not unexpected, as she has improved yearly since winning the 2006 Wimbledon girl’s title.
Wozniacki appeared to be on the verge of burnout last year after suffering a run of injuries, but her development this season has been impressive. Her consistency
