Super Sub Thornton Gets Somersby Ride

Henrietta Knight has been in the news this week with her announcement that she was considering switching her stable star Somersby from his long intended target the Queen Mother Champion Chase to the Ryanair Chase instead.

The Gold Cup winning trainer has now shelved that switch and has reverted back to her original plan to run in the Championship two-mile event and relieved punters who had backed the horse in the ante-post lists will be breathing a sigh of relief.

However Knight did have another surprise up her sleeve, she has now decided that her stable jockey, Hadden Frost does not have enough experience of big races to take the ride at Cheltenham and instead Robert Thornton will be in the plate, a move that is bound to ruffle some feathers and anyone who has placed Cheltenham 2011 bets on the horse will have been taken aback by the decision.

Thornton did ride the seven-year-old twice last season, those rides included the Arkle chase at last years Festival where the pair finished as runner-up to Sizing Europe and those looking at the Cheltenham betting offers shouldn’t necessarily see the move as a bad one.

The move is a shade harsh on Frost, who has forged a good relationship with the gelding this year, but Robert Thornton is a class jockey who has a great record at Cheltenham and he will not harm the chances of Somersby.

Early Super Bowl Stunner: The Line

By Robert Ferringo

We now have early Super Bowl 45 odds and I have to say, I’m shocked. And I don’t really get shocked by early Super Bowl odds.

The Packers are -2.5 favorites over the Steelers right now with a total at 45.0. The fact alone that Green Bay is favored made me do a triple-take; the NFC has not been favored in the Super Bowl since 2002, when the Rams were mammoth favorites against the Patriots.

It isn’t even the fact that Green Bay was the No. 6 seed out of the NFC. Pittsburgh was the same seed in 2006 when they were laying points to Seattle. But what surprised me about it was that I figures that the books would know that with Pittsburgh and its ravenous fan base that they would be getting hit with Steelers money for the next two weeks.

I called a friend of mine that is a sportsbook manager in Las Vegas to ask him what the deal was. And he said that not only were the Packers favored, but all of the sharp early money was pouring in on them. Some books were forced from an opening of -2.0 to -3.0.

So there you have it. Perhaps the sharps were as surprised as I was but then accepted that this is what I call an

NFL – Green Bay Packers defeat the Chicago Bears for a spot on the Super Bowl

by Stephen Lars on Jan.24, 2011, under Football, Sports News

The Green Bay Packers can start packing their bags for Texas to play for the Vince Lombardi Trophy at Super Bowl XLV. With an impressive 21-14 win over the Chicago Bears on the road, the Packers have now linked three consecutive wins on the road to make it into the biggest sports betting event of the season. Only three other teams have managed to win three playoffs road games to make it into the Super Bowl. Two out of those three have returned home with the trophy: the 2007 New York Giants and the 2005 Pittsburgh Steelers. The 1985 Patriots won the three road games but lost the Super Bowl.

Aaron Rodgers didn’t have his best game ever. As a matter of fact, a quick look at his numbers would make you think he was somewhat of a disappointment. With a 55.4 passer rating, Rodgers was far away from what he has been showing since mid-December during the last two win-or-go-home games of the regular season. But despite his numbers, he was they key-player behind the Packers win over the Bears. The first-year rookie ran for a score and perhaps made his best play of the game in quite an unusual fashion for a quarterback: he completed a touchdown saving tackle that could quite easily have changed the outcome of the game.

The Bears, on the other hand, had to deal with a whole lot of issues on their offensive end. Jay Cutler, the starting quarterback, had been playing way under par before he had to leave the game during the third quarter because of some sort of knee injury. Let it be stated that no one is sure when or how he got injured. As if that was not enough, the Bears’ coach Lovie Smith reaction to the reporters’ questions concerning the nature and the details of Cutlers injury certainly didn’t help to clear up the situation.

Cutler was replaced by the Chicago Bears primary back-up Todd Collins. He was no good. For a moment it really seemed as if the Packers would be able to put on at least a 3-touchdown advantage over the Bears. Things got so bad on Chicago’s side that they had to play their odds and use a third quarterback on the game. Little-known Caleb Hanie came in and was the man in charge of giving the Bears their only hope.

Hanie had a chance to tie the game after the Bears’ defense finally got their act together. Unfortunately he threw a ball straight into the Packers defensive lineman B.J. Raji who ran for 18 yards and into the end zone to give the Packers a 21-17 lead. But Hanie had a few more tricks under his sleeve.

He then completed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Earl Bennet to get the Bears to a 7-point deficit with little under five minutes to play. The Bears recovered the ball, but their last chance to tie the game was frustrated when the rookie quarterback threw his second interception on a fourth down on the Packers 29 yard line.

Aaron Rodgers went 17 of 30 for 244 yards no touchdown passes, two interceptions and a touchdown rush. Not his best numbers, that’s for sure, but heck, the talented quarterback is guiding his team into Super Bowl on February 6.

Super Saturday For Highflying Henderson

When A Media Luz fell at the second last whilst holding a winning chance in the opening race of Kempton’s King George fixture on Saturday, trainer Nicky Henderson must have wondered if it was going to be one of those days, writes Elliot Slater.

As things transpired, had the filly gone on to win the race she would have been the first of an amazing six winners on the card for her popular handler. As it was, he had to settle for just five, including sending out the first two in the William Hill King George VI Chase with the tremendous Long Run (9/2) and the tough as teak Riverside Theatre. Henderson’s 357/1 five-timer stole the show on a day when many had expected his arch-rival Paul Nicholls to bask in the limelight once again with Kauto Star. But it wasn’t to be for Nicholls, who left the Sunbury track empty-handed.

French import Nadiya De La Vega (4/7f) made a winning start to her career with Henderson, landing the novices’ chase in some style, earning quotes of as short as 16/1 for the Arkle Trophy. In the next race Henderson’s 15/8f Chablais impressed most observers with an authoritative display in the novices’ hurdle after which he received quotes of around 12/1 for the Neptune Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. Skint failed to justify favouritism in the handicap hurdle finishing second, but normal service was resumed in the next when Polyfast (9/2) returned from a long absence to carry top weight to victory in the handicap chase, to complete a hat-trick for Barry Geraghty. Those who had placed horse racing bets on Henderson’s charges would have been very pleased by events.

Tony McCoy was aboard Henderson’s Binocular (13/8f) a brilliant winner of the Grade 1 Christmas Hurdle and now a strong favourite to retain his title in the Champion Hurdle, before Sam Waley-Cohen gave Long Run a superb ride to lad the ‘King George’ from stable companion Riverside Theatre. The party at Seven Barrows on Saturday night must have been something special and Henderson could be forgiven for not surfacing too early on Sunday morning after a truly memorable performance the day before.

Packers need a lot of Super Bowl luck

Posted on December 16th, 2010 in English Premiership

The Green Bay Packers still hold some Super Bowl ambitions, but they really hoped it was going to go better than it has.

With three games to go in the regular season they can make the play-offs but it had been expected they would lead the NFC North rather than chasing a play-off spot.

They still need to face New England, New York, and Chicago, and are also struggling with a terrible run of injuries and the Super Bowl betting odds 2011 suggest they are unlikely to be putting in an appearance at Cowboys Stadium.

Ryan Gran, Jermichael Finley, Nick Barnett, Mark Tauscher, Morgan Burnett, Atari Bigby and Cullen Jenkins are all ruled out for the remainder of the season, and it looks like Aaron Rodgers will be unavailable when they face New England.

And what a challenge they face against the Patriots as they are in superb run of form and have destroyed teams in recent weeks. The Packers are going to need wins and a lot of luck if they want to make the Super Bowl play-offs and heads could roll at the club if they miss out this season.

The injuries have ripped the Packers apart and the likes of Brandon Jackson and John Kuhn have struggled to really step up and show they are capable of changing a game.

There has just been a lack of a spark coming from the team that were one of the early favourites to win this season’s Super Bowl. If everyone was fit there is no doubting the talent among their roster, but players have been dropping left, right and centre and that has had a terrible affect on their aspirations and the Super Bowl 2011 odds reflect this.

It seems their likely to come down to a must-win game against Chicago Bears at the beginning of January, and that is not how the Packers fans expected things to pan out this season.

Will there be an all-New York Super Bowl?

Posted on December 02nd, 2010 in NFL

There is some talk around the Big Apple that both New York teams could clash in the Super Bowl.

The New York Jets are sitting on top of the AFC East standing at 9-2 and have won their last four matches. It is the second-best start to a season in their history and their 26-10 win over Cincinnati on Thanksgiving night set up nicely a clash for the leading in the standings with the New England Patriots at the weekend.

Over in the NFC East, the New York Giants are now tied for the lead after they ended a two-game losing streak with a 24-20 comeback win against Jacksonville.

There has been much debate about the prospect of an all-New York Super Bowl, but a lot could come down to whether either side would be capable of making it past a strong Pittsburgh Steelers side on their way to the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington in February for Super Bowl 45.  The Super Bowl 2011 odds certainly suggest it is a possibility.

Former Super Bowl winner and MVP Joe Montana has stated he that sees it as a distinct possibility that the Giants and Jets could both compete in the marquee occasion, which would see hordes of New Yorkers heading to Dallas and giving the whole occasion an east coast feel in Texas.

Super Cash - How to Become a Winner Today

There are millions of people who join lottery games each day for a chance at winning some extra cash on the side for them to use in what ever they deem necessary in their lives. The Super Cash game is among those with much growing popularity as one can have a chance to get to have as much as three hundred and fifty thousand dollars in one single draw.

To be able to join the Super Cash game, one needs to be in the age of majority to be able to become eligible to participate. To begin with, the game play is relatively simple; one needs to be able to create their very own six digit combination to play. These numbers can be of significance to an individual much like a lucky number of sorts or even some dates in particular or simply random numbers just on top of their heads.

A great feature for people on the go and can’t seem to be able to come up with a combination, the computer terminal can easily generate random numbers for the individual by simply opting for the quick pick feature. These numbers, which need to be chosen to complete one’s combination can be anywhere between the numbers 1 through 39. The chosen digits must then be carefully marked with any colored ink apart from red in a play slip or a bet slip.

When these numbers have been marked accordingly, one then needs to hand over the slip to the authorized representative at the lottery retailer for them to be able to generate and validate the game with a play ticket for that day’s draw. Each play costs a dollar which is not that much for a promise of bigger winnings. As soon as the ticket has been generated, the player must check for accuracy in the printing and sign the back once they are satisfied with their inspection of the ticket. One also has the option to purchase their games for up to 7 days in advance; this is called the advance play option.

Draws are held daily a few moments after the sales for the day has closed at 9 in the evening. The Super Cash game has a daily jackpot prize of three hundred and fifty thousand dollars and will be granted when all 6 digits of an individual’s combination gets to match those of the 6 numbers drawn. But then again, the great thing about this game is that it offers more than one way to be able to win. One need not get all 6 digits in the drawn combination for them to be able to get a prize. For as simple as being able to get 3 numbers from their chosen set to match those from the drawn numbers, one can as easily get to win an instant dollar.

For those who can get 4 numbers out of the 6 winning digits drawn, one will get to win 30 dollars instantly, and one can get as much as five hundred dollars just by being able to get 5 digits in their combination to match 5 from the drawn numbers. However, there is a 7 million dollar prize cap which will be equally divided should there be more than 20 winners for the jackpot prize.

NFL – Drew Brees Could lead the Saints back to another Super Bowl

by Stephen Lars on Aug.14, 2010, under Previews

Remember those many years where the New Orleans Saints were stacking up a losing season after the other. Their record was so obnoxiously low that even the home fans were at one point calling them the New Orleans Aint’s. Let’s take a quick look at their losing years. The Saints were founded back in 1966 as an expansion team. They played at the Tulane Stadium until 1974. It would take the franchise two more seasons to finally finish a regular season with a .500 average.

As if that was not enough, the people of New Orleans had to wait even longer, until 1987 for the team to see its first successful years, but the spell did not last too long and by 1992, the Saints were again on the losing end of the spectrum. Want to talk about playoffs wins? Well, then you would have to wait until the first postseason of the new millennium to see the Saints win their first ever Playoffs game against the then defending Champions the St. Louis Rams.

And then came Head Coach Sean Payton, and quarterback Drew Brees. It was the spring of 2006 and even before the game began, the fans were starting to believe that good things would follow after Payton and Brees. For the first time in franchise history, the Saints owner, Tom Benson, announced that the team had sold out the entire season on the Louisiana Superdome, with season tickets alone. Just to be clear here, there are 70,001 seats in the that Arena after the latest modifications.

The first home game was somewhat of a national event. The city was finally making its first steps since Hurricane Katrina devastated half of the city. It was a magical moment not only for the team but also for the NFL and the city of New Orleans. The people were showing their support not only to the team but also for what it represented: a city that could get back on its feet, a team that could start making a difference.

2006 was a key season. The Saints made it to the NFC Championship game were they lost to the Chicago Bears. That was their best performance yet. 2007 and 2008 went by without too much success. Then came their year. In 2009 the Aints became the Saints. They played it smart, and although they went on and sacrificed the perfect season, the team was able to win its first ever Super Bowl and bring back the Vince Lombardi Trophy to New Orleans.

Brees is got the keys

Now, for the first time in his professional career, and despite having had some great seasons in the past, the hard working and dedicated Drew Brees is finally joining Peyton Manning and Tom Brady a top of the NFL’s superstardom. Not only is he up for an enormous contract extension, he has received the respect of his fellow players as well as the fans.

He has a very difficult task in front of him. Two in a row is not such a common denominator when it comes to Super Bowl success. As of press time, the Saints are among the top three ranked teams in the Odds to win XLV Super Bowl. Sports betting industry leader Instant Actions Sports has already set up the lines for the first week of the NFL.
