Next Liverpool Manager Odds Point Towards British Appointment

The Next Liverpool Manager Odds are starting to take serious shape and although an announcement isn’t expected until the summer, you can see how the Liverpool board are thinking just by looking at the latest odds.

The current favourite at around even money is Kenny Dalglish, the man who is currently in charge at Anfield. It is easy to see why he is favourite and such a short price; he is popular with the fans and the players and early signs are that they are improving, although results haven’t quite gone their way yet. Dalglish is a worthy favourite but may just be worth taking on as his age suggests he isn’t a long term appointment.

The next name in the Next Liverpool Manager Odds is Martin O’Neill. He has been linked with a move to West Ham but that now looks dead and Liverpool seems a much better fit for a manager who is well known as someone who gets the best out of his players. O’Neill is around the 2/1 mark and it is an appointment that would make from both sides.  Don’t be surprised to see O’Neill given the Liverpool job in the summer.

Another British manager who could be up for the job is Owen Coyle. His stock is rising quickly having done a great job at Burnley and now Bolton and the fact that he is young, British and likes his teams to play football means he is going to be highly sought after over the next few years. The first big team to move for Coyle could be rewarded well, but he may have to fight for the Liverpool job with foreigners such as Frank Rijkaard, who has also been linked with becoming the Next Liverpool Manager.

It’s been an unpredictable couple of weeks for the Gunners, with Van Persie out until mid-October, and Walcott joining him on the injured list, the last thing Wenger needed was a sending off and a last minute equaliser.
Wenger may have a case when he bemoans the additional minute added on top of injury time, which allowed Darren Bent to sneak in and nick an equaliser in a last gasp effort at the Stadium of Light, but few would deny Steve Bruce’s men their point. To further add to Arsenal’s woes, Song was dismissed for picking up a second yellow card shortly after the break, and Fabregas was substituted early on in proceedings after struggling with his hamstring.

Arsenal showed great spirit with ten men, and were unlucky not to take all three points back down the M1, especially when Rosicky smashed a penalty over the bar following an Elmohamady foul on Nasri, but a plucky Sunderland side who had smothered the Arsenal midfield all afternoon took control of proceedings and earned themselves a point.

After demolishing Braga earlier in the week at the Emirates it is clear that Arsenal are in the habit of winning, and if it weren’t for the unstoppable Chelsea would be looking seriously like title contenders. In fact, the Gunners were the Andy Gray betting picks to win the league this season.

A good test for the depleted squad will be the short trip to Spurs on Tuesday night in the Carling Cup. Harry Redknapp will undoubtedly field a strong side, but many are already predicting starts for Vela, Emmanuel-Thomas and Djourou in the derby as Wenger pursues his youth in the tournament. Next weekend’s home tie with West Brom shouldn’t cause too many sleepless nights, although the Baggies out-played Birmingham at the weekend and held Tottenham at home the week before, the Gunners will be confident of picking up the points and gaining some momentum before the crucial clash with Chelsea on October 3rd.

With a few weeks gone in the season, it looks as though the top of the table will have a familiar look to it this campaign. Chelsea and Arsenal are playing the best football, while Manchester United have been picking up points without playing their best football.

Meanwhile, the Notts Forrest betting tips suggest the side are still in with a chance of making the play-offs despite their poor start to the Championship season.

The side are currently 17th in the table, but they are only four points off 6th spot.

Yards Per Point As A 2010 NFL Indicator

On our main source for NFL picks and predictions, Doc’s Sports.com, I posted an article discussing Yards Per Point. This is one of the least discussed statistics in football, but it is also an excellent indicator of success both straight up and against the spread. I was initially turned on to this idea by the work of another well respected handicapper (for obvious reasons, I can’t list his name, but I can say that it rhymes with “Bill Wheel”). He uses it primarily for college football I’ve found, through some research online, that certain statistical thresholds provide reliable data in the NFL as well. Again, the numbers I have are my own calculations built off the initial findings of others discussing the subject. (It’s not as if any one person invented the stat.)

You can read the full article on the main page to get a more in-depth explanation about these stats and how and why they are useful. But below I wanted to give you the Cliff’s Notes version of how Yards Per Point can help you in your preseason preparation.

Below are the 2009 Yards Per Point numbers for both offense and defense. I have segmented out each section and from there you can tell which clubs are, statistically speaking, set up for either a regression with their record or a nice bounce back in their record.
