Robert Pires is going to have to do a lot to prove he can still cut the mustard in the Premier League at the age of 37. The Frenchman has signed a six month deal with Aston Villa and will be at Villa Park until at least the end of the season. Pires has been a truly great player during his career and he has achieved more than most would but is this version of the flying Frenchman what Gerard Houllier needs to get his side climbing the table? Not everyone is convinced.
Houllier is a clever enough chap and he won’t expect Pires to play 90 minutes each week. What the Villa boss will want is maybe a few game changing 20 minute appearances between now and then end of the season and those who follow football betting advice should remember this.
Although Pires doesn’t have the legs he used to he still possesses a footballing brain which as sharp as any out there.
Pires will also bring plenty to the training ground, having a player who has won the European Championship and World Cup will certainly lift the rest of the squad at training as well as the younger players at the club and the soccer betting odds indicate they will need all the help they can get if they are to make the top six this season.
Pires has kept himself in pretty good condition since his contract at Villarreal came to an end in the summer. The 37-year-old was given the chance to train with his old club Arsenal and he could be in line to face the Gunners this weekend, when his former team mates travel to Villa Park. If Pires could have a hand in a home win, then any Villa sceptic would be quickly won over.
