Bruce patches defence together

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is facing a fairly severe defensive dilemma, following the news that first choice defensive partnership Michael Turner and Titus Bramble have been ruled out for lengthy periods with similar knee injuries. The two centre backs won’’ be back in action till the New Year and Bruce is having to patch his defensive options together. Anyone who follows football betting advice should bear this in mind.

Bruce is being forced to rush John Mensah back into action much earlier than he would have hoped. The Ghanaian defender has only recently recovered from a dislocated shoulder and is still feeling the effects of the injury. Bruce is aware of the risks involved in rushing Mensah back, “It would be a big gamble. It’s a gamble, but with his ability, if he can do it, I am prepared to make that gamble – if he can do it.”

Sunderland’s defence has been one of the main reasons behind their success in the first third of the season, conceding only 15 goals in their 14 games and five of those coming in one match. Bruce will hope he can find a solution to the problem and make sure his side are still in European contention after the busy Christmas period and the betting tips suggest this could be tough.

Anton Ferdinand looks likely to reclaim his place in the centre of defence after spending much of the season playing out of position. The former West Ham defender was close to leaving the club in the summer but will now have an extended spell in the side in which he can prove his worth to his manager.
