Everton fans haven’t had too much to cheer about recently and it didn’t get any better at the weekend as they slipped to their heaviest Premier League home defeat for 15 months against the unlikely opponent of West Brom. The match provided the Everton faithful with plenty to moan about, not least Mikel Arteta’s ridiculous red card and some woeful defending that handed West Brom chance after chance. It was, after all, a game the Everton betting suggested they would win.
However, the man who seems to have become the main focus for Everton fans’ understandable rage is Jermaine Beckford, who showed why most Premier League pundits believe he has failed miserably to make what is, to be fair, a major step up in terms of class from League One.
Beckford has been at the club for half a year now but has failed to grab hold of any of the chances that David Moyes has handed him. After scoring 31 goals for Leeds last season, he has managed just one in the Premier League and at the weekend showed why the statistics attached to his name are so miserable. He missed chance after chance in front of goal, with some of the misses quite horrendous from an Everton point of view, and perhaps the most worrying element of the game was the fact that he looked like a man who realises all too well how poorly he’s performing. Anyone who has placed a football bet on him being top scorer will be very upset.
Now, Moyes has come out to beg the player to improve his finishing but with his confidence clearly at a very low ebb, perhaps this wasn’t the cleverest of tactics from the Everton boss.
With Everton facing a tough trip to Stamford Bridge this weekend, it doesn’t seem like things will be looking any better for the Merseyside club this time next week.
