Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson would have taken plenty of encouragement from his side’s display against Bursapor, but he has also been left cursing his luck.
With an already lengthy injury list United fielded some of their younger, more inexperienced players such as Bebe, Gabriel Obertan and Chris Smalling.
They responded with a resilient display, grinding down their stubborn but ultimately toothless opponents to secure a 3-0 win that all but secures their passage through to the knock out stages and the Champions League predictions reflect this.
Obertan and Bebe added to their growing reputations with a goal a piece but the other goalscorer, Darren Fletcher, limped off with an ankle injury in the second half.
In form winger Nani didn’t even last that long, being struck down with a groin strain just before the half hour. He will miss this weekend’s Premier League game.
As far as Europe is concerned though Fergie will be pleased his side have ground out enough results in Group C to move within a point of qualification and the Champions League promotions suggest they won’t have any problems sealing their progression.
They have yet to really hit top gear in this season’s competition but their experience and determination to pick up results means they have collected ten points from a possible 12 without really playing well.
When the knock-out stages do begin next year Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand could be back in the United side, strengthening them still further.
Despite many feeling this side is on the wane, don’t count against the experience of wily Sir Alex Ferguson and the determination of his players to achieve success, whatever the odds.
