The Carling Cup has been a successful competition for Manchester United recently, lifting the trophy twice in the past two years. They will have to get past Wolves this week when the two sides meet at Old Trafford in the fourth round of the tournament. While Sir Alex will most likely rest a number of his key players, United will still go into the match as overwhelming favourites to progress to the fifth round.
Ferguson’s side put a tough week off the pitch behind them to snatch a late away win at the weekend at Stoke, thanks to a brace from young Mexican striker Javier Hernandez. After a less than perfect start to the season, United are level on points with second placed Arsenal as well as their City rivals, five points behind leaders Chelsea. Ferguson will be keen for his team to keep their winning form this week against Wolves. The Red Devils eased into this round with a comfortable 5-2 win over Championship side Scunthorpe.
Wolves have gone a little off the boil recently, after enjoying a decent start to the season they have dropped into the relegation zone with only three points from their last eight games.
Mick McCarthy’s men did show signs of improving in their 2-0 defeat to league leaders Chelsea at the weekend. Those who bet carling cup money regularly note that they will need to improve on their levels of performance from their previous rounds in this year’s competition.
In reaching the fourth round, Wolves struggled to get past both Notts County and Southend, both victories requiring extra-time.
A surprise carling cup 2010 odds win could give Wolves the boost they need to improve their season.
