Middlesbrough v Sheffield United Preview

This game will focus more on visitors Sheffield United after the Blades decided to part company with Kevin Blackwell last weekend. Gary Speed has since been handed the reins and his first task will probably be the hardest he could have asked for. Middlesbrough have been the divisions big spenders and after being labelled as clear favourites for promotion, the pressure is on Gordon Strachan to deliver.

Despite their spending, Boro’s campaign hasn’t exactly got off to the best of starts and they’ve just picked up the one point so far this term. Following an unexpected 3-1 defeat to Ipswich on the opening day of the season, Strachan’s men responded by beating Chesterfield in the Cup. Their latest result was a goalless draw at Leicester and with that, it appears as though Strachan’s new signings still haven’t quite clicked. Still, two games into a season is by no means enough time to judge and you’d have to imagine that once Boro’s new look side have gelled, they’ll certainly be a force to be reckoned with.

Sheffield United became the first side in the division to dispense with their manager and on the whole, it appears to have been greeted with approval from the Bramall Lane faithful. A 3-0 home defeat to QPR was deemed not good enough by United’s board of directors and with that, Kevin Blackwell was given his marching orders. Some fans will be questioning why Blackwell was sacked so early in the season, as opposed to at the end of the previous campaign. Still, the Blades have moved on and replacing Blackwell is one of his coaching staff
