Blind Stealing In Poker

Two major differences between cash games and poker tournaments are that in a poker tournament the blinds gradually increase where in cash games they do not and you cannot reload your stack at any point in a tournament (unless of course it is a rebuy). These two characteristics of tournament poker mean that you must constantly accumulate chips to keep ahead of the rising blinds and ante and one way to do that is to steal these blinds and antes.

By stealing I do not mean literally taking the blinds and antes but instead raising preflop, most of the time with a sub-standard hand, hoping to fold out the players who are yet to act so that you win the money already in the middle of the table. Doing this once or twice an orbit can be the difference in making it through to the money in the Betfair GSOP Gold Hunt or crashing out before you are financially rewarded.

Before you go out and begin raising as if it is going out of fashion spend a few minutes to think about the ideal scenario for a successful blind steal. Firstly you should be seated in one of the late positions at the table, preferably in the cutoff or on the button. This is because your raise has to go through fewer people so is more likely to be successful. Also, you should have a relatively tight image or have at least not shown down some weak hands in the past couple of orbits otherwise you run the risk of one of your opponents attempting to re-steal from you, costing you chips.

Also, the players in the blinds should preferably be tighter than the average player so that they are more inclined to fold. Loose-aggressive players are far more likely to play back at you, again costing you crucial chips at a time you are trying to accumulate them. Finally, stack sizes of those in the blinds are important. Big stacks are going to be more inclined to call you, short stacks to move all in on you so average sized stacked opponents are best.

We have all seen television footage, read in articles and seen for ourselves when a poker player correctly calls out his or her opponent’s exact hand. It is a great thing to see but trying to do so is a recipe for throwing chips down the drain at an alarming rate as you will rarely be 100% correct, instead you should play against a range of hands your opponent could hold.

Luck Vs Skill In Poker

One of the longest running debates surrounding poker is whether or not the game is one of skill or one of pure luck. Indeed, even the American government argue that poker is pure gambling whilst others classify poker as a mind sport.

So is poker a game of skill or is it governed by luck? The actually answer is both, which probably does not help but let me explain.

If you take a look at the leaderboards for online Texas Holdem tournaments and cash games it is always the same players who are there. When you look at players such as Daniel Negreanu and Phil Ivey, why are they the two most profitable tournament players of all time? Are they simply luckier than everyone else? Surely not.

The thing is that poker is a game that, in the long term, is a game of total skill but is massively effected in the short-term by the luck of the draw, so to speak. Poker is unique in that the very worst player in the world can take on the best and beat him on any given day but if the two opposites play for long enough the good player will take all the weak player’s money. Compare this to a game such as football where you would expect a team like Manchester United to beat Yeovil Town every single time they played, without fail.

Behind all the attempts to read players, making bluffs and everything, poker is a game base don mathematics, mostly odds and probabilities of cards arriving on the next street or not. This is why poker, in the short term, is a game of luck because you have a set chance a card you need will come or not. But in the long term, as the mathematics converge to the norm, or what you would expect, skill starts to be the dominant force in play.

One of the reasons those who play poker online often say they are better players than those who only play live is because the online players will often have played more hands in a single year than their live counterparts will have done in their entire lifetimes. This means that the online players are less likely to be winning due to variance and more to the fact they are beating the game which cannot always be said of the live players as they simply will not have played enough hands or tournaments to be able to truly say they are winning due to skill.

How the Texas Poker Bill Ended Up Dead in 2009

A recent bill that was presented to the state was allowed to just die off without even voting on it. It was unclear at first as to why they were allowed to just kill it off, but later realized it was a bureaucratic loophole in the system.

This new bill proposed, was going to allow poker games to be held at racetracks state wide. The House bill 222 called by most the “The Texas Poker Bill” was going to be closely monitored by the Texas Lottery Commission.

The original version of this bill allowed poker games at local bars and restaurants. The original bill was argued, some saying that it would protect player’s homes from thieves robbing an in-game session, or police raids as well. But after reviewing the bill extensively things had to be toned down a bit. This most recent bill that has been brought before the Texas legislature has been scaled down pretty significantly.

Initially, supporters of the Texas Poker Bill thought it had a good chance to pass. The state of Texas is facing a large budget deficit this year. Meanwhile, millions of dollars leave the sate every year when Texas residents cross the borders to gamble in Louisiana, Oklahoma, and New Mexico.

The bill was contested because the state loses millions of dollars every year due to Texas residents crossing the border to gamble in Louisiana, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. With that in mind the state of Texas is facing a very large budget deficit, and the extra taxed revenue would be huge for the state. Initially, supporters thought the Texas Poker Bill had a good chance at passing but couldn’t have been more wrong.

However, the bill just seemed destined to fail, as just before the bill was about to go up for voting, the government relieved the state of Texas of its budget deficit with federal stimulus money leaving no urgency for extra revenue for the state. Texas State Governor Rick Perry made it abundantly clear that he would veto any bill, expanding gambling with in his state. So really no matter had the bill gotten the 100 votes needed to pass, it would have not made much difference to the Governor.

There was another option. Jose Menendez a Texas State Representative and strong supporter of the bill came up with a possible solution. Menendez proposed a discussion, and vote re-introduce the bill on June 2nd 2009, ironically one day after the new legislation is set. He argued that because the bill had not been voted on that it was eligible to be re-submitted to the legislature a second time.

Unfortunately, the legislature only meets every two years. Which means this bill will not be able to be put up for vote until 2010 but more like 2011 before it is voted on and passed. Its seems as if there is still life in the bill but supporters will need the extra time to do everything they can to get it to pass in two years.

Another popular poker cash strategy is that of becoming a master bluffer. This is an individual who is completely unreadable, who displays no tells, and who retains an air of quiet calm whether their hand is an obvious winner or complete air. Developing this strategy is very difficult in a live situation but, where online poker is concerned, one need only make certain that the actual strategy displayed to other players is not completely readable. Learn to play the game and avoid using automated features to make certain that other players cannot guess anything about one’s intentions or one’s position.

One’s best poker cash strategy will also depend on one’s position where finances are concerned. For instance, if one happens to have the shortest stack at the table, it is not the time to get overly-aggressive and certainly not the time to become The Maniac. This is the time to; either pick out smaller fish and pick them off or to make very conservative bets and wait for the best hands to come along. The situation is radically different if one happens to be sitting behind a very tall stack of chips.

As is the case in the business world, those individuals who fail to see an opportunity and, thus, fail to take advantage of it when it presents itself are the same individuals who will inevitably fail when they may well have succeeded. When one has a large stack of chips it’s time to take out the smaller players. Being in the dominant position at the table means that it’s an excellent time to use bluffing, intimidation, and even blind raising to force other players into positions that make them too uncomfortable to carry on and which will cause them to fold.

One’s poker cash strategy must not only depend upon the finances they have in front of them at the table, but on the finances they can reasonably afford to bet on any given game. One needs to keep in mind that, if they have too much riding on the game, they will not be playing at their most efficient or effective level. The Maniac and the bluffer will both reveal that a player who is scared and nervous is an easy mark. Set sensible budgets and make sure that the total amount that one is willing to wager does not cause a hardship in one’s life. Above all other things, poker should always be fun.

A good Poker Cash Strategy does not mean being a one-trick pony. It means adapting one’s strategy to the situation at hand and to the level of play with which one is presented by one’s opponents. Good players master all of the strategies. Sometimes they’re maniacs, sometimes they bluff, and sometimes they just sit back and relax and let the other players fall victim to their own lack of skill. The last strategy, of course, requires that the player spent a lot of time at the tables.

All the top players study poker away from the game. That is how they continuously beat the games that they are playing. Self study will ensure that your game does not stagnate, will help spot leaks, and will help you spot leaks in your opponent’s games. It is by far the best work you can do away from the table.

So before you can start doing hand history reviews it is essential to buy a piece of software called Holdem Manager (before you mutter to yourself, here’s some promotional waffle about Holdem Manager, please let it be known I am in no way affiliated with this product. I wish I was because I love it!).

Holdem Manager is a poker tracking software which keeps track of every hand you play on line. It allows you to then analyse all those hands and replay them using a hand replayer and give statistical breakdowns of equity and pot odds in those hands. It allows you to study your opponents as well as your own play. It has revolutionised on line poker. It costs between $50-$80 depending on whether you buy the professional or beginner package, but it is well worth the money.

To begin your hand history review, you can filter on a reports tab in Holdem Manager and input all hands played after a certain time period, say over a 2 month period. You can then filter all your hands from biggest pots lost to won.

Then start a spreadsheet or just use a refill pad and note how you lost every big pot over 30 big blinds. I guarantee you even with limited knowledge of poker, once you go back over a hand in a replayer you will spot the blatant mistakes easily. Note what the mistake was and move on to the next big pot you lost and rinse and repeat.

Once you have done this you can start to group the mistakes. You will start to see a pattern of where you are making the same mistakes over and over again. In my last big hand history review after a downswing I had 9 mistakes I saw happening way too frequently for my liking. I then put this on a word document and printed it out and read this sheet before I sat down to play a session over the next month. At the end of the month I reviewed my hands played that month and put a line through the mistakes I had removed from my game and highlighted the ones that still remained. I had the list reduced to one and since then I have cut out that mistake from my game and I am currently on a upswing and very happy with my game.

I do believe that once a month you should review all your hand histories of all big pots over 30 big blinds which you either won or lost to keep away those pesky downswings and your game fresh.

Using Your Position In Poker

Poker is a game played with incomplete information as you do not get to see your opponent’s hole cards. In order to make a decision at the table you have to observe betting patterns, pay attention to the player’s image amongst other elements and then use this limited information to make an educated guess as to whether your hand is good.

This makes playing in one of the later positions at the table much more attractive as you have more information at your disposal before you have to make your decision. Many players are aware of this, especially online poker players who have a plethora of information available to them via forums and software but a large percentage of these players fail to actually fail to fully utilise their positional advantage over their opponents.

If you are playing position properly then you should be playing aggressively preflop, raising limpers and isolating weaker players. You can actually force your opponents to tighten up dramatically preflop by three-betting them lighter than usual. Some players will try to become the table captain and try to run things their way but if you have position on such a player then you should retake control and show them that position is king.

You should also run more multi-street bluffs, particularly in a cash game. There is a large percentage of players who will limp into the pot, call your preflop raise and then check/call your continuation bet. At this point many players will give up on their hand, unless they have a made hand of course, but having a position means you can fire again on the turn and even the river if needed to put your opponents under maximum pressure. For example, a player limps in and you raise with 9h8h. He calls and you both see a flop reading Tc4d2h. He checks, you continuation bet and he calls. Now the turn brings the Ac, a lot of players here would check behind if checked to but it is perfect for firing again and you will take the pot more times than you would give the move credit for.

Finally, you should be willing to value bet more thinly whilst you have position on your opponent. Many players will simply check behind their opponent on the river when they have a hand they think to be best but are not 100% sure but when you have position on them you should bet a large percentage of the time and put the pressure back onto your opponent to make the call. The amount of pots you will win without showdown will far outweigh the times you lose when you are beaten or have to fold to a check-raise.
