Derby Hope Carlton House Back On Track

Carlton House, the red hot favourite for this weekend’s Investec Derby at Epsom, is reported to be over the worst of the injury scare that caused such a panic in the ante-post market yesterday when word leaked out that The Queen’s horse had suffered a setback, writes Elliot Slater.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt galloped six furlongs on Sunday with a stable companion and reportedly pleased connections with the way he went. The trouble began when Stoute checked the son of Street Cry at evening stables on Monday and the legendary trainer noticed a small amount of swelling on the horse’s near-fore joint. After having the horse X-rayed it was found that the Dante Stakes winner had a little filling in the joint the first sign of a potential injury and Stoute decided to immediately ease off the work for his charge and only allowed him to be trotted yesterday.

News of the slight setback soon filtered out to the Epsom Derby betting markets and resulted in Carlton House drifting from being a solid 6/4 market leader to as big as 2/1 in places. It is likely that the swelling was caused by nothing more than a slight strain, so if the it subsides as is anticipated there is no obvious reason why the big race favourite shouldn’t take his chance on Saturday afternoon and attempt to give The Queen a first winner of the world’s greatest horse race after 60 years of trying as an owner/breeder.

Concerns over the wellbeing of the favourite naturally resulted in most of his closest market rivals being trimmed in price. French challenger Pour Moi was the most notable mover in the market and is now as short as 7/2 second favourite following days of sustained support. Aidan O’Brien’s Recital is offered at 5/1, his stable companion Seville is 6/1, Native Khan is 9/1, and they go 14/1 bar.

Ipswich v Derby Preview

Nobody knew what to quite expect from these two clubs at the start of the season following indifferent 09/10 campaigns. However, both are performing well and with home side Ipswich sat in 6th and Derby a couple of places higher in 4th, this promises to be one of the more exciting fixtures of the evening.

It’s been a strange season for Ipswich who have been plagued with inconsistency. The Tractor Boys have had spells where they’ve put together some fantastic results, only to then fall foul of some poor form. However, with the division being so tight this year, that inconsistency doesn’t matter so much now and it’s very easy to jump from a mid-table spot right into the playoffs. They come into this game on the back of consecutive victories against Millwall and Sheffield United although interestingly, the stats are against the Tractor Boys who have never recorded three straight wins under the management of Roy Keane. Should they achieve that feat, they will strengthen their position in the top six as they are only up there due to superior goal difference at the moment.

Derby meanwhile are in stunning form and Nigel Clough seems to be finally experiencing success at Pride Park. The Rams’ supporters have been far too used to struggles at the wrong end of the table yet this campaign seems different and the club are right up there in 4th spot

Derby v Portsmouth Preview

This is one game that should be excellent for the neutral, with both of these sides in fantastic form of late. Both endured disastrous starts to the season yet they have put some excellent results together over recent weeks and as it stands Derby sit in 7th spot while Portsmouth are in 10th. Both have the exact same number of points and know that victory could result in them jumping into the top six.

Derby v Watford Preview

Both of these sides have experienced Premiership football within the past few years although despite their recent history, both were expected to struggle in this campaign. As it turns out both managers have engineered very good starts, with Derby sat comfortably in 12th while Watford are all the way up in 5th.

It was only last week that Derby were knocking on the door of the playoffs, only to see a 2-0 defeat them send them right down into 12th. That shows exactly how tight the division is, but that result was their first defeat in seven so it’s certainly not all bad for the Rams. Eighteen points from their first thirteen games will please the majority of the Pride Park faithful, who have become used to struggles at the wrong end of the table in recent seasons. However, Nigel Clough appears to have got the balance right in this campaign and with key players such as Kris Commons now injury free, the Rams have an excellent opportunity to make an assault on the top half. Commons’ form in particular should be highlighted, with the former Nottingham Forest man notching a terrific seven league goals from midfield already this term.

Watford meanwhile are having a brilliant season. The Hornets’ expectations were even lower than Derby’s, although Malky Mackay’s shrewd management appears to have paid off and the Vicarage Road outfit have netted an impressive twenty one points from their opening thirteen fixtures. Just like the visitors, the Hornets are coming into this game following a 2-0 home defeat to Scunthorpe that was completely unexpected considering their brilliant start to the campaign. That loss meant that Mackay’s men have now lost two out of their last three and while it’s hardly a crisis considering their overall start, it’s something that he’ll want to put right as soon as possible.

As for team news, Derby will have Luke Moore available again after they reached a deal with West Brom to extend his loan contract. Elsewhere however, Russell Anderson will not feature as he struggles with a hamstring injury while Stephen Pearson may only be fit enough for the bench having only just recovered from a knee issue. It’s mixed news for Watford who will be without Lee Hodson through a back complaint. However, Malky Mackay is hopeful of including strikers Danny Graham and Marvin Sordell who have both been struggling with niggling injuries.

Derby have comfortably won their last three games at Pride Park and with that, we’re going to tip a Rams victory here. Watford won’t make it easy, but we think Nigel Clough’s men will come out on top in this outing in a 2-0 victory.

Merseyside derby suggests change in the dominant force

Having to sit and watch as the club they had just taken over was beaten in convincing style by its biggest rivals (who also happen to be succeeding despite the fact that they have been forced to work with a far more modest budget) surely can’t have been the most pleasant of experiences for the new owners of Liverpool Football Club.

However, the fact Everton were able show they are, for now at least, the best side on Merseyside (and perhaps by a considerable distance on the evidence of the terrible display put on by their rivals at the weekend) means that Toffees fans have good reason to smile this week. Although anyone who follows the Betfair Football Andy Gray predictions would have seen it coming.

The Toffees still look to be an outside bet to qualify for the Europa League at the end of the season, but the club looks all set to begin a run of form which could see them rise swiftly up the table, something that Liverpool fans can only dream of at present. In fact, the Premier League betting suggests Everton could finish above Liverpool for the first time in four seasons.

With manager David Moyes showing a level of passion and realism that Roy Hodgson seems to have failed to develop during his long career, Everton could be set for bigger things.

If they can find a backer who is prepared to put only a fraction of the money into the club that Liverpool are going to require, they will be more than capable of matching the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal in the competition for that fourth and final Champions League place on a regular basis.

Barnsley v Derby Preview

Most bookmakers predicted Barnsley to struggle in this campaign, while Derby were tipped to have a season of stability. The first six games have gone against those expectations though and Barnsley are flying in 7th place, while Derby are in the relegation zone. The Tykes are coming off the back of a memorable 5-2 victory over local rivals Leeds and with a 100% home record to their name, Derby really will have their work cut out.

Mark Robins could not have been happier with the start Barnsley have made and it probably goes beyond what he expected after six games. The Tykes have collected ten points and it’s just goal difference that is keeping them out of the playoff places. It’s the best start they have made in years and with that, morale amongst supporters is very high. Robins will be most pleased with the amount of goals his side have scored and despite many fans crying out for a new striker during the summer, the Tykes are the division’s second top scorers having bagged twelve already this season. Supporters are also extremely happy with the recent signing of Birmingham striker Garry O’Connor, who played a big part in the club’s victory midweek and managed to get on the score sheet as well. However, his loan deal only lasts a month and the club may only have a chance of extending that should they continue this good form.

Derby supporters on the other hand will not be satisfied with their team. The Rams have just won once this season having started the campaign with a 2-1 victory over Leeds. Since then it’s been defeat after defeat and having recorded four losses and one draw in their last five games, it would be fair to say they are in something of a rut. While Nigel Clough is something of a hero at Pride Park after his playing days, as a manager he hasn’t made an impact and fans will be wondering if it might be time to make a change soon. Clough has managed to bolster his strike force in recent weeks with the signings of Alberto Bueno and Shefki Kuqi, but you can’t help but wonder if there are bigger problems the club needs to sort out.

Mark Robins is not expected to make changes following the victory over Leeds on Tuesday, even though Hugo Colace has now returned to full fitness. It’s a little more eventful for County on the other hand who are poised to give a late fitness test to Gareth Roberts who is struggling with a hamstring strain. Should Roberts not make it, Dean Moxey will continue to deputise.

You won’t find two sets of supporters so different on the morale scale, with Barnsley fans absolutely flying while the Rams support is at something of a low. With the confidence of Tuesday, we think the home side will net a comfortable victory here and put Derby in even more trouble
