KAZZENE  got Tony McCoy's day off to the perfect start with a winning British debut, defeating Triumph Hurdle fancy Brampour in the process, who could only finish third.

RELATED LINKS Triumph Hurdlebetting  Formerly trained in France on the Flat, the four-year-old was very keen through the early part of the race, but still had plenty left in the tank after A Media Luz’s dramatic departure at the penultimate flight.

It had been Jolly Roger who led the field turning in having stuck to the inside throughout, but it appeared that both Brampour and A Media Luz were primed to take over, with the last-named travelling supremely well under Barry Geraghty.

However, as Geraghty hit the front his mount appeared to dive atthe hurdle and crashed out, leaving Brampour in the lead under Harry Skelton.

Despite his urgings, Brampour couldn’t get away from the late challengers, led by Kazzene who, despite jumping the last less than fluently, was able to draw away from Brampour on the run-in, scoring at 11-4.

Second went to the rallying Kuilsriver at 33-1, with 13-8 favourite Brampour third.

On the back of the performance bookmakers introduced Kazzene as a general 12-1 chance for the Triumph Hurdle, with the unlucky faller A Media Luz also trimmed in places, Blue Square offering 16-1 (from 25).

Winning trainer David Pipe said: "He had decent form on the Flat in France and has got plenty of size about him for a juvenile.

"He's always gone nicely at home but he is a bit of a character with plenty of ability. He didn't jump the greatest but goes on any ground and if we can improve his jumping then we've got a horse with a future."

Pipe added that should Cheltenham come onto Kazzene's radar, the Supreme Novices as well as the Triumph Hurdle would be under consideration.
