Not prepared to rest on their laurels after their shock win over Saudi Arabia, the Syrians played attacking football against Japan, but the strategy backfired as Japan won 2-1 thanks to a late penalty despite playing the last quarter of the fixture with ten men following the red card to their goalkeeeper Eiji Kawashima.
