Can Copenhagen shock Chelsea?

A really tasty affair taking place in the upcoming round of the Champions League is the tie between FC Copenhagen of Denmark and the current English champions Chelsea. On paper it may seem like something of a mismatch, with the Blues’ international pedigree and wealth of experience at this level of European competition, but if the likes of Southampton and Crawley Town have taught us anything this week, it’s that a team high on confidence on the back of good performances in their own league can make life very uncomfortable indeed for supposedly better sides. The Champions League specials hint there could be an upset.

And when it comes to performing well in their own league, FC Copenhagen have pretty much written the book this season. They currently sit nineteen points clear at the top of their domestic table, and have amassed a whopping goal difference which is currently 25 better than their closest rivals – a combination of both creative and expansive attacking options and a tight defence. Anyone looking to bet on Champions League action should bear this in mind.

Chelsea have enough problems of their own to worry about without having to look at their opponents for more. Carlo Ancelotti’s job is under threat since with the exception of their latest 7-0 rout of Championship side Ipswich, they have failed to muster a victory since they wrapped up qualification from their group against MSK Zilina, and the mere fact that their next opponents are the first Danish club ever to reach the last 16 of the Champions League should be enough of an indication that they are not a threat to be taken lightly.
