His was one of four horse racing books to make the 25-book long list. Richard Dunwoody’s second autobiography, 'Method in my Madness', covering the escapades and expeditions he has undertaken in retirement, is also included, as are two books by Anne Holland: the eponymously titled story of Sea The Stars and ‘Kinane’, telling the history of the famous racing family.

Competition from other sporting books include tomes about Italia ’90, Lansdowne Road and several about hurling.

Tony Kenny, spokesman for William Hill Ireland, said: “This sees some of the biggest names in Irish sport competing for the biggest prize in Irish sports writing.

“The long list again highlights the quality of sports writing we have in Ireland and with a range of sports involved it will again be a tough decision for the judges and the public, who also get the opportunity to vote online.

“From John Giles and Ruby Walsh to Darragh Ó’Sé, Bernard Dunne and Lansdowne Road, the subject matter is fascinating for this year’s award.”

More information and voting can be found on the official website.

Ruby Walsh, 'Ruby' and Richard Dunwoody, 'Method in my Madness', are available from the Racing Post bookshop
