England are currently second in Group G with six points from two games. The Three Lions put the memories of a poor World Cup beyond them as they thrashed Bulgaria 4-0 and Switzerland 3-1 in September.

Coach Fabio Capello has been given some serious food for thought due to the number of injuries in the squad. England look woefully short of options in both defence and attack.

At the back, Capello is without John Terry and Phil Jagielka, both of whom withdrew from the squad with injury. That leaves the gaffer with three options in central defence- Rio Ferdinand, Joleon Lescott and Gary Cahill.

Should Ferdinand partner Lescott in defence, as expected, he is also likely to take the captains’ armband from Steven Gerrard. Gerrard deputised for Ferdinand in the qualifiers last month when the latter was out due to injury.

Upfront England are left with only Wayne Rooney, Darren Bent, Peter Crouch and Kevin Davies as options. Should Davies get a surprise debut, he will become the oldest England debutant since 1950.

Capello has generally chosen to start with two upfront and has played Rooney as a withdrawn striker. The role of partnering Rooney is likely to go to Bent, who was impressive against the Swiss last month.

England form- last five games- most recent first- England scorers in brackets

Switzerland 1-3 England (Wayne Rooney, Adam Johnson, Darren Bent)
England 4-0 Bulgaria ( Jermain Defoe
