Ballack out to regain captaincy

Michael Ballack returned from missing this summer’s World Cup with an ankle injury to inspire his new side Bayer Leverkusen to a 2-0 opening game victory over Borussia Dortmund.

After missing the World Cup, Ballack will be keen to earn back the German captaincy after being forced to hand it over to Philipp Lahm in his absence. Lahm performed admirably in his new role in South Africa and has made it clear he is desperate to hang on to the armband.

At the weekend, Ballack returned to action and despite tiring a little towards the end, he was instrumental to his side’s dominant display as they outplayed Dortmund to kick off the new Bundesliga campaign with a win. This boosted their chances of winning the title
