France defeat caps a year to forget for Fabio
AT the start of the year Fabio Capello’s England were just 11-2 joint-second favourites with the mighty Brazil to win the World Cup.
RELATED LINKS Free bet Bet In-Play now But the final match of 2010 ended amid a chorus of boos as England slipped to a 2-1 defeat to France in a Wembley friendly to crank up the pressure on the manager.Hills go 10-1 from 33-1 that the Italian is gone by the end of the year, while they have cut their odds about an Englishman taking over the role from 4-9 to 4-11.The good news for Capello is that friendly form seems to count for little – at least as far as bookmakers are concerned. Among the surprise results on Wednesday, European champions and World Cup winners Spain were beaten 4-0 by Portugal but they remain unmoved at the top of the market at 4-1, while the Portuguese are also unchanged at 14-1.On Thursday Fifa suspendedthe two executive committee members from voting for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup hosts after completing a corruption investigation.Nigeria’s Amos Adamu was banned from all football activity for three years, while Reynald Temarii of Tahiti was suspended for one year. Russia are 10-11 favourites to win the 2018 bid, while England are 7-4.Steven Gerrard has been ruled out forup to four weeks with the hamstring injury he picked up in England’s dismal 2-1 defeat to France on Wednesday.Liverpool’s influentialskipper limped off in the 85th minute at Wembley and the Merseyside club yesterday confirmed the midfielder has sustained a grade two tear.Gerrard will definitely miss Saturday's Premier League clash with bottom-of-the-table West Ham, while his participation in upcoming games against Tottenham, Steaua Bucharest, Aston Villa, Newcastle and Utrecht is also highly doubtful. There was better news for beleaguered Reds boss Roy Hodgson, however, as Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt, Martin Skrtel and Glen Johnson were all declared fit for the clash with the Hammers. The London club have been trimmed to 13-2 to pick up theirfirst win at Anfield in 40 attempts, while Liverpool have drifted to 4-7 to get back on track after their disappointing 2-0 reversal at Stoke last week. That result piled the pressure back on Kop boss Hodgson, and he is 13-2 to be the next manager to leave his post. His opposite number, Avram Grant, is above him in the betting at 9-4 and both bosses will be desperate for a positive result.England’s defeat against France coupled with the Gerrard injury provoked a wave of anger towards Fabio Capello and the FA yesterday, but the English game’s ruling body moved quickly to quell the bad feeling by announcing they had approved plans to begin work on their long-awaited national football centre at Burton-upon-Trent.Building work on the £105m centre will begin in January, and is hoped to be completed by the summer of2012.The pick of the weekend’s Premier League action is Saturday lunchtime’s north London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham at the Emirates.Arsenal are 4-6 favourites for the match and they welcome back French centre-back Laurent Koscielny from a two-matchban.The Gunners do have doubts over midfielders Jack Wilshere and Tomas Rosicky.Spurs will monitor Aaron Lennon’s troublesome hamstring, but they could have Jermain Defoe on the bench after the striker returned to training following an ankle injury.Harry Redknapp’s side are 9-2 shots to record only their second league success over their arch rivals in 22 meetings.Aston Villa confirmed they have signed Robert Pires on a deal until the end of the season on Thursday. The former Arsenal star and French World Cup winner had been training with the Gunners, but Villa boss Gerard Houllier snapped up the 37-year-old veteran as cover for injured midfielders Nigel Reo-Coker, Steve Sidwell and Stilian Petrov.Visit The Betting Site for the latest match odds, live football scores and expert verdicts. Nicholls 'could not be happier' with Denman
Denman winning the Hennessy from What A Friend 12 months ago
PICTURE: Edward Whitaker (racingpost.com/photos) Nicholls: I couldn't be happier with DenmanBy James Burn 6:00PM 22 NOV 2010 CHAMPION trainer Paul Nicholls plans to field five runners in his bid for a fourth Hennessy Gold Cup on Saturday and said he "couldn't be happier" with top-weight Denman, who is attempting to win the prestigious handicap for the third time. RELATED LINKS Hennessy card Hennessy betting Gold Cup betting Free bets The 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner was on Monday joined by stablemates Neptune Collonges, Taranis, The Tother One and Niche Market as 20 horses remained at the latest forfeit stage for the Hennessy, with Denman no bigger than 4-1. Weird Al, Pandorama and Burton Point, Denman's main rivals according to the betting, also stood their ground, but they will forced to run from out of the handicap, and Nicholls is in optimistic mood because of that.He said: "Of course he's got it all to do on Saturday off 11st 12lb and an 8lb higher mark than last year, but that will be offset to a degree by a lot of the runners being out of the handicap."Nicholls, who won the Hennessy twice as a jockey, added: "We know he loves Newbury, he loves the hustle and bustle of the Hennessy and he seems to come good at this time of year. I couldn't be happier with him."Denman, who will be ridden by Sam Thomas, is a best-priced 12-1 to regain his Gold Cup crown at the Cheltenham Festival in March, but those odds will shorten if he lands a record-breaking third Hennessy.Nicholls is also set to unleash dual Ladbrokes World Hurdle winner Big Buck's in the Sportingbet.com Long Walk Hurdle at Newbury on Saturday and that race was re-opened on Monday.

Only seven willing to tackle Big Buck's in Long Distance
Big Buck's (right) winning at last season's Cheltenham Festival
PICTURE: Edward Whitaker (racingpost.com/photos) Only seven willing to tackle Big Buck's By Paul Eacott 12:54PM 23 NOV 2010 BIG BUCK'S will face a maximum of seven rivals, the nearest of which is rated 20lb inferior, when he lines up in Saturday's Grade 2 Sportingbet.com Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury. RELATED LINKS Newbury card The presence of the dual Ladbrokes World Hurdle winner meant the race was reoffered but still only seven others could befound willing to take him on, one of which is rated an incredible 90lb below the 174-rated Big Buck's. The Nicky Henderson-trained Duc de Regniere would appear to be the most credible opposition on Official Ratings, with the likes of Afsoun and Arcalis having had their better days in the past.Philip Hobbs has entered Duke Of Lucca and Nigel Twiston-Davies Kayf Aramis. Neptune Equester could have a first start over hurdles at the age of seven, while the 90-rated Spider Boy looks to have an impossible task. Cold snap forces Newbury to change Friday's race times
Newbury will protect course with the use of frost covers
PICTURE: Edward Whitaker (racingpost.com/photos) Newbury change Friday's race times to protect turfBy Paul Eacott 1:16PM 23 NOV 2010 OFF TIMES at Newbury have been shifted forwards on Friday to allow the racecourse staff extra time to cover the track before Saturday's Hennessy card. The first race will now be at 12.30pm (moved from 1pm) with the last at 3.15pm (originally 3.50pm). RELATED LINKS Newbury Friday card Uttoxeter Thursdaycard Wetherby Wednesdaycard With a cold snap predicted by the Met Office towards the end of this week, the BHA has agreed to the earlier finish to allow extra time to lay the frost covers before temperatures begin to fall. Stephen Higgins, joint managing director of Newbury racecourse, said on Tuesday: "With falling temperatures predicted this week, frost covers are being laid on the whole racecourse from today."Thecovers will be lifted and repositioned after each days racing. This move has been made in order to enable our grounds team to cover the whole racecourse on Friday afternoon ahead of Saturday aiming to retain as much heat as possible in the ground before temperatures begin to fall." Stan James offer 4-9 about the Hennessy Gold Cup being run at Newbury on Saturday, with an abandonment priced at 13-8.Ground staff at Uttoxeter are also taking precautions against the forecast falling temperatures before their fixture on Thursday.Charlie Moore, clerk of the course, said: "It could get down to between -2c and -4c, so the whole course will be fleeced to protect it against the frost. The hurdle course is being done on Tuesday and the chase course will be covered on Wednesday morning."Wetherby are anticipating no problems for Wednesday afternoon's meeting. Clerk of the course Jonjo Sanderson said: "We are alright. Schalke and Lyon battle it out for top spot
Subscribe in a reader
Group B will have a much clearer look about it after this week’s matches. Lyon are currently top of the tree but are only two points clear of this week’s opponents FC Schalke 04, so nothing is decided when it comes to the Champions league betting odds in this group.
Two wins and a draw so far in the group stage have left Schalke on seven points and in second position. The German side will be fully aware that a win against Lyon would take them above the French club and into the driving seat for the top spot.
Schalke’s European campaign has been going a good deal better than their domestic one. Their form has been patchy to say the least and Schalke are currently treading water in 15th, although they did find their form this weekend when they ran out comfortable 4-0 winners against Werder Bremen.
Those betting on champions league matches note that Lyon will be without their captain for this week’s tie after Cris suffered a swollen tendon in his knee in their weekend victory over Nice and will sit out the Schalke game. Lyon’s three game winning streak came to abrupt end in the 4-3 defeat to Benfica in their last match, putting an end to their hopes of finishing the group stage unbeaten.
The French club will probably still go into the tie as slight favourites despite Schalke having the home advantage. Lyon scrapped a narrow 1-0 home victory over Schalke earlier in the group stages and will be out to record the double over their German hosts in their bid to finish top of their group for the first time since the 05/06 season.

What a difference a year makes
Subscribe in a reader
Twelve months ago Bolton lost at home to local rivals Blackburn to slip into the bottom three. They had conceded 17 goals in six games and boss Gary Megson, deeply unpopular with the fans, stood on the brink.
Those often studying the livescore at Bolton note that Megson was eventually sacked in December and former Trotters striker Owen Coyle was tempted to leave North West rivals Burnley to take the hot seat at the Reebok Stadium the following month.
His task was not only to keep Bolton up but to transform them into an attractive footballing side, ridding them of the long ball tag that had dogged them since the days of Sam Allardyce.
To say he has done his job is an understatement. In under a year Coyle has re-modelled the side with very little investment in the playing squad. Instead he has largely worked with what he has got but
crucially got under performing players to perform.
One of those is Johan Elmander. The Swedish forward signed for Bolton from French club Toulouse in a record

Misfiring strikers leave top goalscorer title wide open
Subscribe in a reader
Carlos Tevez may be doing well at Manchester City, but none of the other big name strikers in the Premier League have shown themselves to be consistently at the top of their game so far this season, despite Dimitar Berbatov starting this season in what many deemed to be the form of his life.
As a result of this, the Premier League Golden Boot market with most bookies is wide open. However, with strikers as well as clubs likely to hit form sooner rather than later, there must surely be someone out there ready and willing to grab hold of their chance to win the Golden Boot title.
It may well be that the identity of that man is more familiar than you may at first think. With Wayne Rooney now seemingly ready to come back and hit form for a Manchester United side he needs to prove himself to after flirting with other teams, including rivals City, just a few weeks ago, perhaps the one way that he can show his renewed loyalty is by firing his team to a 19th Premier League title. He certainly looks a good value football bet right now.
This, of course, is nothing more than a prediction, and the quality and previous goalscoring records of both Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba mean that they cannot be discounted from coming back and putting together a string of fine performances that end with them hauling themselves to the top of the Golden Boot table in the space of just a couple of weeks. However, the Manchester United betting suggests Rooney could mount a run.
Whatever the result of the Golden Boot competition, its impact on the destination of the Premier League title cannot be underestimated as the leading striker is often part of the country’s top team.

X Factor Odds
It’s been a few weeks since I had a good old rant about just how crap the X Factor is this year, not helped of course by the fact that it appears to be as fixed as a Zimbabwean election. And what is with Simon Cowell’s fascination with Katie Weasel?? Clearly the production lawyers spent a small fortune getting her out of her American music contract otherwise she and her ‘this is the real me’ would have hit the road weeks ago!
The shine appears to have rubbed off Cher this weekend which landed her in the bottom two alongside poor Paije who never really stood a chance in hell of winning it. But he was definitely one of the least offensive and nicest of the contestants, oh if only Danni hadn’t placed all her eggs in the Cardle basket….
Up there at the top are Matt, Rebecca and even little boyband One Direction and it looks like they could be the trio to battle it out at the finale but for all the odds, in case you fancy somebody completely different, just check below….
Oh, and if it’s of any interest, you could have got Wagner to win at 150/1 at the start and he’s now only 20/1!

Ashes Betting 2010
A little history lesson here, just for those of you who may not be offay with The Ashes. Back in 1882 the English and the Aussies decided to do battle on the cricket pitch and fight for what can only be described as of the most teeny weeny trophies of any sport. They play Test cricket in what is one of the sport’s most celebrated rivalries and alternate the venue between the United Kingdom and Australia.
Cricket being a summer sport, and the venues being in opposite hemispheres, the break between series alternates between 18 and 30 months, obviously depending on when the Summer of the hosting country. A series comprises five Test matches, two innings per match, under the regular rules for Test match cricket. If a series is drawn then the country already holding the Ashes retains them.
So now that that’s out of the way let’s crack on with The Ashes 2010. It’s in Australia and starts on Thursday, November 25th. This being Cricket of course, the series will continue until the fifth and final match on January 2nd 2011 when they meet each other in Sydney.
Bookies have Australia as favourites which means you can still get a reasonably good price on England to win so get in there early as odds will dramatically change as each game goes on…

NBA – Chris Bosh brings on his A-game against Phoenix Suns
by Stephen Lars on Nov.19, 2010, under Basketball, Sports News
We have been a bit harsh on the Miami Heat during these first weeks of the NBA wagering season. It’s not that we hold a grudge against the institution, or any of the new Big Three players. Matter of fact, we had very high hopes for this group of talented guys. Yes, we are aware that the Heat with LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh are perhaps the NBA’s hottest asset. But the bottom line is that they have not been playing up to their name, or at least, to the very high expectations that where placed upon them since James made his official announcement this summer.
And perhaps, this might be the right time to start cutting these guys some slack. Yes, the Miami Heat have lost their two early season matchups against the veteran Boston Celtics. Yes, not even LeBron James going mano-a-mano with Rajon Rondo could keep the Celtics from revealing the inner-mechanisms of the Heat’s weak defense. And yet, somehow Chris Bosh was able to shine on his own, and guide the Heat to an impressive 123-95 pounding of the Phoenix Suns.
Let’s get things into perspective hear. We have to realize that despite not holding their best record ever, and just sitting third in the Pacific holding on to a 6-5 season, the Phoenix Suns were back in track right before they faced the Heat. Coming from a tight schedule on Friday, Sunday and Monday the Suns had defeated the Sacramento Kings 103-89; the LA Lakers 121-116; and the Denver Nuggets 100-94, respectively. So, without going for too much of a stretch we could say that the Suns where on a roll when they came down to Miami.
And then it was over. Chris Bosh didn’t play at all in the 4th quarter, and yet he managed to close the game with 30 minutes of action, 12 out of 17 from the field, didn’t miss a single one of his 11 free throws for a 6 rebounds, 4 assists 35 point game. It seems that finally, at least two of the new Big Three are finding their groove. LeBron James and Chris Bosh are finally syncing into the same tune. They are working together for the first time in the season.
If Miami really want’s to have a chance in the playoffs, they have to get this part right: You can’t win if James and Wade are taking turns at dominating the ball and the offense. They need to start finding a way for the three of them to dance to the same music. Otherwise they will not stand a chance against the Lakers or the Boston Celtics, just to name a few.
NBA – San Antonio Spurs and Tony Parker’s divorce
Sometimes sport can be dramatic. Heck, most good games are all about the drama. About quenching the most excitement in the final moments of a game. A couple of plays, a couple of shots towards the end of a game could change history. Yes, sometimes that’s all you need to make for an epic game.
Sports have a tendency towards the fairy tale as well. Most of us who follow professional and collegiate sports from a bettor’s perspective, tend to have somewhat of a soft spot for Cinderella Stories. It’s not just that the underdog has a better payout, but also a matter of seen the little team make it to the Final Four, or watching the Saints win their first Super Bowl, or any other epic upset.
Then there is the case where sports stars turn their personal life into somewhat of a dramatic circus. And there’s plenty of names we could throw in here. But heck, for the sake of brevity lets just stick with Vicks, OJ’s, Favre’s, Maradona’s, Jame’s and other drama kings, to make up for another interesting cast of Days of Our Lives. And here is where Tony Parker’s story gets interesting.
Just four years after his fairy tale wedding in Paris, Eva Longoria and Tony Parker have filed for divorce. Yes, the usual suspect: irreconcilable differences. Parker has won three NBA Championships with the San Antonio Spurs and Eva Longoria is part of the starring cast of TV hit series Desperate Housewives. Don’t you worry too much though; they had their prenuptial agreement squared out before filling for divorce.
Longoria, at 35, is 7 years older then Parker. The couple didn’t have children. The actress was seen regularly in front row seats during the season, but recently here absences had been more noticeable by the gossip magazines. There where some rumors about there been trouble in paradise.
Despite the rumors and the scandal that the news has arrived, Parker has had a very positive attitude towards the whole issue. He is crunching in very good numbers this season. His 13.5$ salary is enough to keep him motivated and so far in the last five games, Parker has averaged 30 minutes of game time for 20 points per game and almost 7 boards. It seems like he is taking his stress back into the basketball court. And it is giving good results for the San Antonio Spurs.
ATP Tennis – Novak Djokovic defeats Thomas Berdych at ATP World Tour Finals
by Stephen Lars on Nov.23, 2010, under Sports News, Tennis
Novak Djokovic had a sore spot ever since he fell to Czech Thomas Berdych during the Wimbledon semifinals in July. But it is now payback time, as the talented Djokovic brought in his A-game to the 02 Arena in London in his first match at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals round-robin stage to defeat Berdych in a 6-3, 6-3 matchup.
Djokovic knows his way around this tournament. He had a great tournament during the 2008 season when we went all the way to capture the season finale at Shanghai. In the 2008 final Djokovic went face to face with Nikolay Davydenko and won 6-1, 7-5. The following year, when the tournament made its move from Shanghai to London, Davydenko was able to step up and win the tournament playing the final against Argentine Juan MartÃn del Potro by 6-3, 6-4.
The ATP World Tour Final is certainly a very different tournament. Contrary to most any other professional ATP sanctioned tournament, the World Tour is not played based on a single elimination knockout stage. The World Tour Finals only calls in the 8 best ranked players at the end of the year.
These eight players are then divided into four players groups. Players in group A and Group B take on a round-robin first stage where they play 3 matches against the other contenders in their group. The two best record holders in each group then make it to the next phase of the Barclays World Tour and into the semifinals. The Winners are awarded up to 1500 ranking points and there is over a 4.5$ million purse.
Djokovic has been very successful this year over hard court surfaces in the ATP circuit. This is his 40th win in hard courts. He has only fallen 10 times in the fast paced hard courts this season. And that surely was evident in the court. Djokovic clearly dominated the 25-year-old Czech throughout the whole match. Berdych committed 19 unforced errors, and from early in the first set, it was evident that he was in trouble. Berdych suffered two double faults in the opening game. From there on there was very little hope for Berdych.
Djokovic arrives to the 02 arena as the No. 3 seed in the tournament. He is really experiencing one heck of a season. He has won 26 of his last 33 games and it really seems as if he might just be able to keep on crunching his opponents.
If you are looking for some wagering on Tennis action, then you probably don’t want to miss on the action on November 23rd. Roger Federer will play Andy Murray while Robin Soderling will take on David Ferrer. As of press time, Federer is a favorite to win at ML-130 with a comeback of ML
NCAA Football – Oregon struggles but defeats California 15-13
It not only takes a great team to be ranked on the No. 1 spot in the NCAA Football betting season; sometimes you have to get a little luck to make it pass a powerful team and clinch on to the top spot of the BCS ranking for yet another week. This was certainly a good chance for the Oregon Ducks defense to step up and show that the Ducks are not working their way into the BCS National Championship game exclusively on the prowess of its offensive team. The Ducks defense can also walk the walk.
Oregon had to struggle in the road as the California Golden Bears, 5-6 overall and 3-5 in the PAC 10 division, found a way to stall and bring down the Oregon’s offensive end, which this year has been the best in the Nation. The Golden Bears brought Oregon’s offense to a season low 317 yards. And that’s not all, not only did they kept the team from scoring more then one touchdown, they also kept the Ducks scoreless during two quarters. Now, to really get things into perspective, you need to consider that the Oregon Ducks have been hold scoreless on three other quarters so far this season. But California’s defense did the trick and kept the usually pouring offense from shinning.
And then there was the luck factor. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, California had a great chance to complete a 24-yard field goal and get ahead in the score by one point. Even though the junior kicker Giorgio Tavecchio completed the field goal, the Ducks were able to get a huge break in an illegal motion by the Golden Bears’ kicker. Tavecchio took a stutter step forward before the snap and the play was cancelled. As if that was not enough, he then missed a 29-yard try on the following play.
The Bears could have won this game, and they could have really hurt the Oregon Ducks chances of getting into the National Championship Game. They played the game well. To get California’s performance into the right perspective you need to consider that the Golden Bears kept Oregon 40 points beneath their season average. That’s a lot. California had been quite dominant when it came down to defending their home team advantage. But it was just not the case.
Oregon took the win. But it was evident that this was the closest game of the season so far. The Ducks had not won a game by fewer then 11 points this season, and that 15-13 was a clear proof that the Ducks where struggling and just barely managed to win. Sure, they were far from covering the spread, but hey, the Ducks are still a very reliable wagering option. They are 6-4 ATS for the season.
Oregon will now play Arizona as the team tries to keep leading the BCS standings. They shouldn’t struggle that much, as they Ducks are a -19

2011 ATP World Tour season preview
The 2011 ATP season will have some fascinating subplots and questions that need answering. Can Rafael Nadal embark on an era of dominance? Is Andy Murray capable of winning a slam? Can Roger Federer win another major? Will Juan Martin del Potro return to his best after injury?
All these questions can clearly be answered in the affirmative, but the most likely to happen according to the tennis odds, and the reason why all of these permutations cannot come to fruition collectively, is the Nadal factor. The world number one was so dominant at his best this year that it seems more likely that he will clear up at the majors than they be shared around.
Once Nadal returned to full fitness in the early part of the European clay court season, there was no stopping him. Injury forced him out of the Australian Open at the quarter final stage, but he won every other major and was by some distance the best player in each event.
In 2010 Nadal became the first player ever to win a slam on each surface in a calendar year and just the second in the Open era, after Rod Laver, to win three consecutive majors in one season. He is undoubtedly capable of winning all four in 2011. Federer’s record haul of 16 majors will surely be soon under threat.
It is of course ridiculous to write Federer off. He definitely has more major titles in him but it is undeniable that some of his magic has ebbed away. The great Federer-Nadal rivalry might be a thing of the past, but expect the Swiss legend to be the main threat to the favourite, particularly at Wimbledon.
After a strong start, ATP tour tennis betting pundits note that Murray somewhat lost his way in 2010 and needs to find the consistency needed to lift the big trophies. More slam final appearances beckon, but doubts remain as to whether he can beat Nadal and Federer when it really matters.
Del Potro is something of the forgotten man after a sustained injury absence. He can be good enough to win another major, as he did in New York last year, but he will not find it as easy as Nadal did to bounce back from serious injury problems. 2012 is a more realistic target for majors for the Argentine.

Tottenham are currently level on points with Inter Milan at the top of Group A but a win against Werder will confirm their entry into the knockout stages of the competition. This on the other hand is a must win game for Bremen- they have collected only two points from four games in Group A so far.
Tottenham’s left midfielder Gareth Bale was in stunning form in both legs against Inter Milan and will be worth putting your money on for an assist or even a goal. Bale also scored in Tottenham’s win over Arsenal at the weekend.

Murray looking to end the season in style
You can’t deny that Andy Murray has endured a difficult season. However, having triumphed over Robin Soderling in front of a home crowd at the O2 Arena in London, Murray is now hoping to win his first ATP World Tour Finals trophy as he looks to hide the fact that he has still failed to win a Grand Slam event in his career to date.
With Murray disappointingly failing to progress through to the semi-final stages of the competition in London last season, he along with those who regularly place tennis bets will realise all too well that a solid start is not enough to ensure that he reaches the latter stages. In fact, the Scot will know precisely what is needed now and that’s a victory over rival Roger Federer in his next match at the event.
Despite winning the Australian Open earlier this year, Federer has been accused by some tennis online betting pundits of struggling in general this season, and has failed to reach the lofty heights that his many fans have come to expect of him. However, with one Grand Slam victory representing one more taste of success than Murray has achieved this year, any talk of a slump certainly needs to be taken with a hefty pinch of salt.
Having said that, with Murray having performed well in the majority of his previous battles against Federer, he certainly knows precisely what it takes to be successful against the Swiss maestro.
If Murray can remember the winning formula that has served him so well in the past and use a victory against Federer as a launch pad from which to win the ATP World Tour Finals event and then a first Grand Slam early next season, the Scot will have finally lived up to the potential we all know he holds.
This said, though, if Murray finds himself beaten, and down and out once again, he’ll know that the tag of underachiever will continue to haunt him wherever he goes.

Ancelotti giving kids a chance
Carlo Ancelotti is planning on testing his younger players on the biggest stage of them all as only a point will guarantee them top spot in Champions League Group F.
Chelsea are assured of their qualification into the last 16, so their Italian manager is taking the opportunity of seeing how some of the next generation of Stamford Bridge stars will cope.
They are however taking on the whipping boys of Group F in the shape of MSK Zilina. The opponents have not won a game, have scored only one goal and conceded 15, so Chelsea are capable of winning this match without their international stars and the Champions League promotions reflect this.
Ancelotti has confirmed that Alex and Michael Essien will both not play as they have been struggling with injuries in recent weeks, which gives an opportunity to Josh McEachran and Jeffrey Bruma.
Teenager McEachran has played for Chelsea this season but this will be his first start, and he better not get complacent and think all games are as easy as the Champions League predictions suggest this match will be.
“Bruma will play from the beginning and also McEachran. Bruma at centre-back and McEachran as a holding midfielder,” Ancelotti said.
“It is the time for McEachran to play. He’s shown a good attitude and personality. It’s a good moment for him. It’s the time for him to have his chance.”
Chelsea have had a dire recent run in the Premier League, where they have lost three of the last four, and a good result in the Champions League could get some confidence back.
True, Zilina are never going to be giving them much of a challenge but a comprehensive win, and good performances by the kids, could reigning the Stamford Bridge crowd.

2010 season review – Novak Djokovic
2010 has been another season of consolidation and consistency for Novak Djokovic. He has again been a regular presence in the latter stages of the four majors and finishes the season third in the rankings for the fourth consecutive year.
In some ways, tennis online betting pundits believe that the Serb has improved on last year’s efforts, reaching the last eight of every slam for the first time and appearing in his third slam final. However, he did not feature in a Masters 100 final for the first time since 2006 having appeared in five such finals in 2009. He won just two tour events compared with five victories last year.
This fragility in the business end of tournaments has again been manifested by a weakness in long matches. Djokovic was beaten by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga over five tough sets at the Australian Open quarter finals, and more worryingly, threw away a two-set lead against Jurgen Melzer in the last eight of the French Open.
Djokovic’s reputation for physical and mental frailty was not helped by a spell on the sidelines due to illness and allergy problems mid-season. Opponents know they can be rewarded for persistency against Djokovic, who appeared to conquer some of these demons at Flushing Meadows.
He beat Viktor Troicki in a five-set epic played in searing heat in the first round and saved two match points against Roger Federer in another one that went the distance in the last four. This should encourage him when the chips are down next season, as they are sure to be at some point in the slams

Magnificent mare Zenyatta retired
Jerry (right) and Ann Moss - owners of Zenyatta
PICTURE: Nicholas Godfrey Winner of the Eclipse award for top older female in 2008 and 2009, Zenyatta was initially retired after her first Classic victory in 2009.However, her workouts impressed connections so much they reversed the decision and kept her in training in the quest to become the first horse to achieve a double in the Breeders' Cup showpiece since Tiznow in 2000-01.Zenyatta was ridden for most of her career by Mike Smith, but the partnership ended on a sour note as the jockey came under intense criticism - notably from himself - for the Classic defeat, which came after Zenyatta had spent the first half of the race well adrift from the main field."Mike was devastated, really devastated," Shirreffs said in the aftermath of the Classic. "He loves this mare so much."Zenyatta is expected to arrive at Will Farish's Lane's End Farm near Versailles, Kentucky in early December, though breeding plans have yet to be finalised. pulling no punches - a dissection of the Australian cricket squad
Naming a 17-man squad ten days out from the First Test sounds like a bone-headed decision to me, but the selectors had no control over it apparently - they were told to do it by Cricket Australia who wanted to have the team finalised this week in order to fulfill all their bloody sponsorship and marketing commitments. Reeks of cockiness at a time Australia doesn't deserve it, when their official Test ranking has dropped to fifth - not that anyone particularly cares about that rating but it is obvious Australia no longer rule the roost.
THE INCUMBENTS
Ricky Ponting - still a world-class batsman but the rust is starting to creep in. Have not been convinced by his captaincy for several years now but the lack of a better alternative keeps him in the job. Also, Aussie selectors tend to retire Australian captains rather than let them play under another leader, although that policy hasn't been required for many years now. Should never have kept the job after losing the Ashes twice.
Shane Watson - I've finally been converted from a Watto-hater into a fan. Australia's most consistent batsman since being turned into an opener and provides a reliable fifth-bowler option as well. Our most valuable player and I backed him a few weeks ago at 12/1 to score the first century (either team) of the series. Averages just over 50 in Australia but strangely, only 10 when batting first and sent in (stats only since he began opening).
Michael Clarke - when he sticks to thinking just about his batting, he is very, very good. Unfortunately, there's too much space in his limited grey matter being taken up by admiring his tatts, his hair, his latest bimbo WAG (although his latest is an old friend apparently and may bring him back down to earth) and his captaincy ambitions. A back injury will keep him out of this week's Shield match as a precaution. Not the answer as Ponting's replacement as captain.
Simon Katich - solid and honest as an opener, has formed a strong partnership with Watson. Averages 52.42 in the last three years.
Michael Hussey - averages just 37 for season 2008-10. Scored seven 100s in his first three seasons of Test cricket (05-07, 29 Tests), just four since (35 Tests). His once elite average has now dropped below 50. Has been under pressure for a while and always manages to pull out an innings that saves him for another six months. At 35, there's not long for him left and there are players barking at the door.
Marcus North - 19 Tests, 1122 runs, average of 37.40 with five centuries. That's a lot of failures punctuated by the odd good innings. His part-time spinners can only get him so far, they'd be of more use if Hauritz was dropped. Severely under pressure, his ability to score runs when it doesn't really matter in Shield games shouldn't be saving his arse.
Brad Haddin - done little wrong apart from get injured occasionally and let him Tim Paine fill his place admirably. Would have to stuff up pretty badly for Paine to get in, no matter what he does.
Mitchell Johnson - possibly the most over-rated Test cricketer on the planet. Brilliant figures on home soil but terrible when he crosses the equator. Stop worrying about your bloody ugly tatts and whether your bimbo WAG and mother get along, and concentrate on your bloody bowling. Bowls way too many pies for a gun bowler, I fear the cricketing world have worked him out after a successful streak early in his career. Prove me wrong Mitch, prove me wrong....
Nathan Hauritz - scares no-one, Australia simply does not breed quality off-spinners. It doesn't say much for our bowling stocks if we can't usurp him either with a quality fourth quick or just a finger spinner who can worry batsmen, at least a tiny bit. The sort of bowler I would love a crack at playing for Worcester Park CC 3rd XI....
Ben Hilfenhaus - taking his time to get back to peak form after a knee injury but brings accuracy and variety into the attack, complementing the other bowlers. Has only played one of his 11 Test matches at home. Will love a bit of moisture in the air in Brisbane.
Doug Bollinger - I put him in the XI simply because Siddle has been injured a lot this year. I don't see the need for two left-arm pacemen in the side out of three speedsters. Handy, moves it around a bit, but not a world-beater.
AND THE OTHERS
Peter Siddle - should be in the XI ahead of Bollinger although his form in the recent ODIs against Sri Lanka wasn't sparkling. Handy workhorse but never going to be more than the third option.
Ryan Harris - looked good at the end of last season filling in for other inured bowlers. Now he's the one with the dodgy knees. More of a one-day player at this stage.
Steven Smith - young leg-spinner trying to do too much with his batting for my liking. Let's concentrate on frustrating batsmen into playing silly shots and getting out rather than throwing in a four-ball each over and releasing the pressure. Signs are good but he's never going to be another Warney.
Usman Khawaja - haven't seen him and to be honest, hadn't heard of him until he was called up for the England tour earlier this year. Huge wraps on him, although he does play for NSW and that goes with the territory. We need some fresh blood in the top half of the order, whether it be him or...
Callum Ferguson - no relation to me unfortunately but this guy can really play. Might have squeezed into the team already if he hadn't missed a year with a knee reconstruction. Brilliant fieldsman, solid with the bat, and needs to turn his limited-overs form into quality innings in the longer format of the game.
Xavier Doherty - given no hope until he got a run in a one-dayer against Sri Lanka recently and took some quality wickets. A left-arm orthodox bowler with modest averages (mind you, the competition isn't great either), his biggest asset is he is the type of bowler that KP has struggled against most. Best chance to play will be in Sydney where they'll probably take two spinners.
On form alone, England deserve to be favourites but their recent record in Australia is poor. However, you can argue there has been a paradigm change between the two sides. Australia does not have its match winners anymore, and even it's best batsmen are past their best. England's best asset is Swann, the rest of their attack is no better than what the locals have to offer, and home advantage will mean plenty.
STATS THAT MATTER
The last live Test England won in Australia was Adelaide, January 1995. Wins in Melbourne 1998, and Sydney 2003 were after the series was already decided.
The last drawn test was at the Gabba in November 1998. That's 14 Tests on Aussie soil since a draw. There has been a lot of rain all around Australia recently, which can be due to long-term seasonal systems which turn up once a decade. With plenty of daylight after the scheduled time for stumps (except Brisbane which is in a state without daylight savings), most rain delays will be able to be made up.
Since McGrath and Warne retired after the 2006/7 Ashes series, Australia's Test record against top opposition (England, India and South Africa) is 21 played, six matches won, 10 lost, five drawn.
2005 was the year that Australian cricket dominance began its decline. Players arriving at the end of their careers, poor depth behind them due to limited opportunities and an England side hellbent on regaining the Ashes. This might just be the southern summer where Aussie dominance on home soil disappears as well.

Racing NSW wins racefields legislation case appeal
Must admit this one caught me by surprise. Initially Betfair had won the case alleging Racing NSW had discriminated against them and in favour of their bed partners Tabcorp in charging a 1.5% turnover fee for the use and publication of NSW race fields. Racing NSW appealed the verdict and were today awarded an unanimous verdict in their favour, despite clear evidence that Racing NSW do everything possible in their power to support Tabcorp.
Racing NSW wins Federal Court decision
The financial future of racing in NSW is secure following a decisive legal victory for Racing NSW over corporate betting agencies in the Federal Court today.
Racing NSW executives were elated when three Federal Court handed down a unanimous ruling upholding the right of the NSW racing authority to impose a 1.5 per cent tax on turnover from all wagering operators covering NSW racing.
Naturally Peter V'Landys is claiming victory and that his judgment as supreme ruler of NSW racing should never have been questioned..... Time will tell. Betfair have one port of call left in the judicial system, plus one with the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) before this case is over. If Betfair fail to have this ruling overturned, then other state racing authorities will no doubt swiftly change their legislation to fall into line with the greater rewards of this controversial policy.
On the flipside though, long-term I doubt this actually benefits the industry. If higher fees are imposed on corporate bookmakers and Betfair, that simply forces more punters away from racing and onto sports betting. The majority of corporate bookmaker turnover these days goes through their best tote options, and is then bet back into the various TAB pools - which the TABs incentivise by giving VIP customers (including corporate bookies) chunky rebates. Imposing extra fees will only reduce product range and thus reduce the flow-on turnover back to the totes. There are various reasons why these customers of corporate bookies avoid using the totes directly, and to blindly believe that all money bet on tote products away from the TABs will move back to the TAB pools is incredibly naive.
Racing NSW will land a huge lump sum of cash if the ruling holds up - but they'd better invest it wisely rather than putting all their money on that golden goose continuing forever. British racing is a prime example of a body that should have banked a grand sum in a golden year, now they are almost begging for funding....Posted byScott Fergusonat10:15

All Weather Backing System Review
All Weather Backing System image
You may have seen a few emails hit your box this week regarding a new betting system, and tipping service, called All Weather Backing System.
This is clearly one of the ‘does what it says on the tin’ type products, which is great inasmuch as you know what it’s supposed to be… an All-Weather… Backing… System… but you still don’t know whether it’s any good.
Here’s where I come in. I’ve had a copy for a couple of weeks now, and I’ve run the rules through various horse racing databases to get a feel for a) how accurate the results are, and b) how likely the system is to continue to generate profits to the claimed levels.
So let me tell you a bit more about All Weather Backing System.
The system manual is completely and utterly fluff-free, meaning it weighs in at a featherweight four pages only. But don’t be fooled by that. After all, most business gurus I listen to reckon you should be able to write an entire business strategy on the back of a napkin!
What this does mean however is that there are no detailed walk-through’s of how to identify a qualifying horse, or anything like that.
In fact, the manual consists of an explanation of the ten simple rules; a commentary on WHY the rules have been added; and, a line or two on staking, which runs as far as to suggest a 30 point bank and level stakes. Personally, I’d probably use a 50 point bank, and I might be tempted to use a very light incremental approach, but using the author’s suggestions would have served you well historically.
But, as we all know, history belongs in history books. So what of the future, and who the hell is the author anyway?
Well, I’ve looked at the rules, and I’m happy that they’re all predicated on sound logic, which is a pleasant change in itself. The strike rate is somewhere between 22 and 25%, which means you can expect some losing runs. The counter-argument is that winners come in packages up to 10/1 and, of course, if you’re using the ol’ Betfair machine, you’ll get more than the bookies’ price for your investments.
The system is authored by a chap called Sam McCallon. You may or may not know Sam through his systems review website, onlineracingreview.com. He’s been going for about two and a half years now, and in that time I’ve spoken with him regularly on email. In short, he’s a guy I know and trust as honest and up to his word.
His All Weather Backing System reckons to have around 125 bets a year, and most of these are struck – unsurprisingly – between Deecember and March, the ‘real’ all weather flat racing season. In that regard, All Weather Backing System makes for an excellent portfolio addition.
The number of qualifiers should ramp up a fair bit in the next few weeks, which means now is the best time to take advantage of Sam’s 30 day no quibble refund policy. To quote the young man himself, “If however within the first 30 days of using this system you don’t for whatever reason feel that it represents value for money then I will offer you a prompt no hassle refund.”
Can’t say fairer than that?

Moving Up / Down / Out in Newmarket
Newmarket Stables - who's moving in?
You would think that the end of the flat season means a time for trainers to wind down and relax until the New Year is upon us. Far from it.
Even for those trainers who do not run any of their horses on the all-weather during the dark and cold months of mid-winter, the off-season in Newmarket is still full of frantic dealings. Not for future champions, mind.
Come November, the annual hectic yard merry-go-round kicks into action and this year is not short of rumours of who is moving yards and where they may be going.
Since Simon Callaghan decided to leave these shores and set up a training establishment in America at the end of 2009, his Rathmoy Stables have not changed hands and, in recent months, the stables have been filled by overflow horses from Marco Botti’s yard just down the road.
Callaghan took over the reins from his father, Neville, in 2007 and from the gates the family had produced Group One winners such as Danehill Dancer and Magistretti.

And now, dear reader, for something completely different… Actually, not quite as surreal as a Monty Python sketch, but today – for a change – I’ve recorded a little video for you. It comes in two parts, largely in recognition of the fact that some people will be more interested in one part than the other…!
So… part one is an update on the Champion Hurdle 2011 picture, along with my views – and my bets – on the race to date. That one is directly below this waffle… and part two is me reaching out to the Geegeez community and asking, “Do you want to work with me?”. I’m looking for an apprentice, and this is a paid position for the right person.. details in the second video below.Labels: Apprentice, Champion, Hurdle, Post:, Required, Video

Pennant claims home fans are crucial to success
Subscribe in a reader
Stoke City’s on-loan winger Jermaine Pennant is dreaming of remaining at the Britannia Stadium and helping the club make the home ground a fortress in the Premier League.
The former Liverpool player is currently on a short-term loan from Spanish club Real Zaragoza until January, but he has impressed at the club as they have recovered from a poor start to sit in the Premier League top ten and the Premier League betting predictions indicate the club can push on.
Pennant has played a vital role in helping Stoke make the Britannia Stadium a tough place for teams to come to his season – with the club winning their last three home games on the trot. Anyone looking to bet on Premier League matches should remember this.
He told the Sentinel he would be “more than happy” to remain at Stoke if the two clubs can come to an agreement about extending the loan deal, and it has been the atmosphere generated by the Stoke fans that has impressed him most during his short time at the club.
Those passionate fans are vital in helping inspire the players at home and making sure they take all three points from tough Britannia Stadium clashes.
“Our home games were always going to be the strongest part of our season,” Pennant said.
“The fans make a massive difference and the big teams seem to struggle when they come here.
Dean Whitehead recently scored his first goal for Stoke City, and manager Tony Pulis has called on the midfielder to find the back of the net more over the rest of the season.
Stoke are a club that need all their midfielders and attackers to chip in with goals if they are to finish in the Premier League top ten, and it is starting to look like Pulis has assembled a strong unit at the club that could have them looking up rather than down.

NFL – Dallas Cowboys have their first feel-good game of the season
The Dallas Cowboys made a few changes during the week. And it seemed as if that made all the difference. First, they got rid of head coach Wade Phillips, who had managed to bring the Cowboys to its second worst ever season start. At 7-1 and after 5 consecutive losses, it was time to make a change. And that’s when we must give it up for interim head coach Jason Garret. And that’s the start of the second change of the week. Garret managed to turn around this team and guide it to a very significant 33-20 victory in the road against the New York Giants.
On February 8, 2007, the Dallas Cowboys’ owner, Jerry Jones, announced that Wade Phillips was coming to Dallas to become the new Head Coach. That year the Dallas Cowboys lost in the first playoffs game. On January 9th 2010, Wade Phillips lead the Cowboys to their first playoffs victory in the last 12 years. The Cowboys defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in the wild card round, thus earning Phillips’ first playoffs win.
Wade Phillips was expected to bring this team up and into another winning season. But he couldn’t. A 45-7 lost at Green Bay was enough to set off the panic alarm at Jerry Jones’ office and Wade Phillips was fired.
Jerry Jones is well aware that this is not a complete makeover. There is still a very significant amount of work to be done with the team. At 7-2, the Cowboys are still somewhat of a disappointment, and even though for the first time in a very long while the Cowboys played like a top-notch team, this latest win is no omen of better things to come.
Let’s be realistic with the expectations we can set upon this team. Yes, they defeated the Giants at home, and yes, they broke their 5 consecutive defeats streak, and sure, the Cowboys ended Eli Manninig’s and Co. 5 consecutive win record. But, if you kept a close eye at what happened in the previous 8 games, you can’t help but to notices that removing Wade Phillips was nothing but cleaning up the top of a iceberg.
Jon Kitna was 13 of 22 for 327 yards, three touchdown passes, one interception and one heck of a game. Kitna was able to complete a 13 yard touchdown passes for Dez Bryant, 71 yard pass to Felix Jones and a 24 yard missile to Miles Austin. In other words, Jon Kitna finally gave up a good game while replacing the injured Tony Romo.
Eli Manning had a good game, but it was just not enough to keep the Cowboys from taking over. Manning completed 33 of 48 for 373 yards, but the two interceptions he suffered, particularly the last one of the fourth period, took away the little chances the Giants had to make an impressive comeback in the fourth quarter.
The sun was finally shinning a bit for Jon Kitna. Depsite the two blackouts in the new 1.6$ billion stadium which deleayed the game for eleven minutes and left over 80,000 fans in complete darkness for a couple of seconds, Kitna won his first game as a starter since 2007. Thats what the NFL is all about.
