By TomKerr 1:06PM 27 SEP 2010 DINGLE VIEW could bid to give David Evans victory in the Listed Totepool Two-Year-Old Trophy at Redcar on Saturday, with the four-time winner among 42 juveniles, including Paris-bound Wootton Bassett, left in the race at the five-day declarations stage.

RELATED LINKS Full racecard  Dingle View has leading claims to land the £150,000 race, having most recently taken a huge leap forward in winning the Group 3 Go And Go Round Tower Stakes at the Curragh on her first outing at Pattern level.

Leading juvenile Wootton Bassett retains his Trophy entry as well, though he is expected to tackle the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp on Sunday instead.

Brian Meehan's three entires include two strong competitors, Black Moth and Crown Prosecutor, both of whom have run with credit in Group races this season.

Richard Fahey has six entries, including Wootton Bassett, but he could head to Longchamp for the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere on Sunday.

Sir Reginald, second in a £200,000 sales race at Newmarket last time out, and Premier Clarets are perhaps Fahey's best alternative hopes.

"Wootton Bassett wil run this weekend," Fahey said on Monday.

"He's entered up in France and that's the preferred option, but it could be very heavy ground and in that case he might not run there.

Bookies' share prices rising this week

What a weekend for the bookies!

Chelsea - LOST
Arsenal - LOST
Liverpool - Drew
Man Utd - Drew
Real Madrid - Drew
Bayern Munich - LOST

Racing bookmakers mightn't have been too happy with Frankie Dettori riding four winners in a row at Ascot, but their football profits, particularly from accumulators and coupons, would more than make up for that. It's always worth taking on the big names on the weekends before European action, there's regularly at least one big name which goes down, not so often a bonanza weekend like this one.Posted byScott Fergusonat20:32

petty, juvenile arguments drag racing down

Have to give kudos to ATR presenter Sean Boyce for an excellent article picking holes in the petty arguments being put up by Betfair, bookmakers and the racing authorities at the moment over various issues all relating to funding. So much hot air and yet so many conveniently hidden facts are left out of each's argument. A petty fight with handbags and a lot of flimsy evidence.

When Two Tribes Go To War

.
.
Exchanges like to point to the price edge their customers enjoy but also insist that, despite the very different MO which makes that difference possible, they should be subject to tax and levy at the same rate as bookies. They also like to offer the more attractive products from the traditional bookies portfolio to their own customers using their own cash and operating as traditional bookies. Hence exchanges are happy to stand multiples to their customers in exactly the same way as bookies do – more about this later.

Bookies in turn, hate comparisons with exchanges on the one hand but demand that exchanges are treated the same as them on the other. They want to see exchanges paying tax and levy at a rate that will make it easier for traditional bookies to compete, even though the exchange model is quite clearly completely different to the bookmakers model.

Rather like two tribes attempting to converse in a third language that neither is particularly proficient in this results in some pretty funny misunderstandings and misrepresentations.

It's a long piece but very well-written, and a great account of why neither side should be trusted.

And if you're old enough to remember where the title of his article came from, here's the film clip - a classic...

Betfair float valuation going low

Rival bookmaker Bodog don't mind a bit of innovative publicity, such as being first to price up who killed Archie Mitchell in EastEnders, which was then copied by several other firms. This time they have gone up with markets on the Betfair IPO valuation and the market moves are telling a story.

Initially, under £1.4bn (remember, the figure quoted in most of the press was £1.5bn, which was their valuation in 2005 when Softbank purchased 23% of the company) was priced at 8/11 with over that figure available at evens. But money has come strongly for the under, forcing it down to 1/2, then 1/3.

A Bodog spokesman said: “We have had 182 bets on the downside compared to just 22 on the upside. For a bet this niche this is quite a lot. Having a lot of experience in this industry I’m pretty certain these people will turn out to be right.

“We even had people setting up multiple accounts so they could get three bets at the maximum of £500 a bet.”

Just Another Day at The Office for Stuart Attwell

 Subscribe in a reader

It’s fair to say that being a referee isn’t the easiest job under the world. With cameras covering the game from seemingly every angle and television pundits queing up to scrutinise the performance of referees, it is one of the most high pressure jobs in the world. Except for this weekend. For one week, 99.9% of referees got a free pass – it didn’t matter who they sent off or who they didn’t, what penalty they gave or what they didn’t, any “mistake” the referee made was going to be swept under the carpet.

The reason for that is the performance of Stuart Attwell at Anfield. Whether or not you agree with the goal that he awarded with Liverpool’s Dirk Kuyt, it’s fair to say that it’s a talking point which is going to overshadow any other decision made by a referee over the entire weekends football card. For those of you who didn’t see it, Attwell allowed a goal after Fernando Torres onto a Michael Turner ‘free-kick’, squaring to Dirk Kuyt as the Sunderland defence stood motionless. A simple tap-in later and those in Liverpool shirts were ahead. Turner had simply been leaving the ball for his goalkeeper to come and take the goal kick.

Of course, the role of Torres in this is not blameless. Everyone in the ground knew what was going on, so it raises major questions about the Spaniards view of sportsmanship. Attwell, however, should have blown his whistle and stopped such a ridiculous situation from happening. He has unsurprisingly been defended by the top brass who claim that he was ‘technically’ correct to award the goal, but once we stop applying common sense to football the game is in serious trouble.

As if that decision wasn’t bad enough, Attwell also erred by failing to award Sunderland a penalty when Danny Welbeck was floored by Pepe Reina in front of the Kop. He should also have sent off Steven Gerrard after an elbow which Steve Bruce correctly stated ‘would have resulted in a red card if it had been Lee Cattermole’.

Were this a one-off blip for Attwell, it could perhaps be forgiven but sadly for the young referee who was fast-tracked through the system, controversy seems to follow him around. Nobody will ever forget the “phantom” goal he gave Watford at Reading, a goal which was frankly ridiculous and he has been involved in a spate of controversy over the past few weeks, feeling the wrath of Owen Coyle after Gary Cahill’s harsh red card at Arsenal.

Such is the seeming level of support for Attwell within the FA, it wouldn’t surprise me if he ended up being England’s Euro 2012 referee, but in my opinion he should be immediately demoted to the lower leagues until he learns how to keep himself out of the headlines.

Fortunately for footballing karma, Sunderland recovered from the massive injustice and were able to earn a very creditable 2-2 draw thanks to a double for free-scoring Darren Bent, a striker who must be a serious contender for a starting spot in the England national team.

Bad eggs smear the industry

An Irish bookmaker has done a runner owing thousands after doing his arse at the recent Listowel racing festival.

Bookmaker 'on the run' after leaving Listowel owing 1000s of euros

Bookmaker Ger ‘Dixie’ Dalton is believed to have left Listowel last Saturday owing punters thousands of euros.

Horse Racing Ireland officials have been trying to contact him and have written letters but it seems Dalton is nowhere to be found after ”running out of money and unable to pay out on winning bets”.

.
.

This may not of been a one off incident with sources suggesting that a fellow bookmaker had threatened to object to Dalton’s licence following an incident at a Clonmel coursing meeting were there was a major issue but the matter was later resolved.

To the bookie's credit, he did at least report a cashflow problem to the levy office (bookmakers' supervisor) on the course before fleeing. However, the fact this guy has had issues before will leave a very sour taste in the mouths of punters who have been stiffed. Do regulations need to be tighter? I know in Adelaide, Australia, that to field on a major racing carnival an on-course bookmaker needs to lodge a security bond of $25k. The money is fully refundable, it is specifically there to protect punters if a bookie goes bust. That is on top of the co-operative scheme where all bookmakers pay into a fund which is used to cover a faield bookmaker's debts. That is rarely used because the system is so tight, and usually only when a credit bookmaker gets caught out by a few significant non-payers (most on-course business these days is conducted over the phone rather than cash).

Do such measures exist in the UK and Ireland? They might, but I can't say I've ever heard of them. Yes, it's an additional burden on on-course bookies to bring in tighter regulation, but if it strengthens the credibility of the trade and creates a barrier of entry which puts it above rogues, then surely it is a good thing....

UPDATE

From today's Racing Post:

A Horse Racing Ireland spokesman said "We have extensive powers where we can suspend a bookmaker from betting in the ring or revoke a bookmaking licene when there is a failure to pay out on bets."

Again, a deluded racing official in Ireland. There is NO power whatsoever there at all. The guy has bolted - it's more than likely he won't becoming back because he has gone bust. Where is the protection for punters - the very people who fund the sport and the jobsworths that come up with such lame regulations and statements like these??? Any service which holds money for others - banks, financial services, bookmakers etc - should face tight regulation and have to lodge significant security bonds to protect the customers and the reputation of the industry in the case of default. Perception is everything. Every barrier to entry which keeps out rogues is valuable.

Once again, Irish racing shafts punters. Some previous blog posts about their inadequate efforts:

Why does Irish racing even bother with stewards and starters?

Need any more evidence that racing stewards are blind?

It's a very basic principle of business. You must look after the interests of the customers to keep a business sustainable. The punters ARE the business - without them, there is no money. Owners, trainers, horses, bookies etc all play their part, but they put on the show, it is the punters and ONLY the punters that fund it. So why the hell are HRI allowed to get away with not protecting punters again and again?Posted byScott Fergusonat08:36

it just gets worse in Ireland

The thoroughbred industry in Ireland is worth hundreds of millions to the Irish economy, yet you'd think it was purely for ribbons judging by the regular incompetence of its ruling body, Horse Racing Ireland.

The bookie who left Listowel races last weekend owing thousands has missed his monthly fee payment to HRI by direct debit SEVEN months in a row.

Dalton: ‘HRI should not have allowed me to stand at Listowel’

.
.

The Killarney-based bookmaker, however, maintains that HRI and it’s betting division manager, Paul Finegan, should emerge from the debacle with little credit.

Explained Dalton: "My direct debit to HRI bounced seven months in-a-row. That direct debit is for pitch fees and levy and would come to approximately €2,000 a month.

"I owed HRI €4,500 and they stood me down for two and a half months. I then got a loan for €4,000 and Paul Finegan, on behalf of HRI, took that and told me I could pay the monkey (€500) when I had it.

"I returned to bookmaking at the Curragh on the Saturday and Sunday before Listowel. I lost €2,500 on the Saturday and a friend paid that for me. I didn’t do any damage on the Sunday and then headed for Listowel.

"I went to Listowel with no money and didn’t set out to rob anyone, but was under desperate pressure.

What an utter farce. It only directly affects maybe a couple of hundred punters at most, but the stain on the industry costs far, far more. The cynical public already think bookies are crooks and any time you get one over them, no matter how much you bend the rules, is a good thing. But the negative publicity from this just adds to it, and the HRI only have themselves to blame. It appears to be the softest licensing system known to man.

Fielding as a bookmaker should be a privilege, not a right. Acquiring and holding a licence should be a difficult task with a lot of hoops to jump through. This bookie has had more than enough problems to remove his licence, and yet they just laugh it off, allowing someone who is simply the corporate version of a problem gambler to continue trading!

Bookmakers (on-course and corporate) should be forced to lodge significant monetary security bonds with the licensing body. The size of the bond should depend on the type of licence and size of the business. If a bookie is only going to hold €5k for a day at the races, then his fee should be much less than the biggest guys in the ring willing to stand €50k at a time (if there are any of those left!). On-course bookies also pay into a co-operative fund which is there to cover the debtys of any fielder who goes bust, owing punters money. This system has been in place for decades in Australia and it serves its purpose. Any bookie to have gone bust in recent decades has paid out all punters, and everyone is happy. Punters haven't been stiffed and they come back again.

Racing wants to be professional, it wants to squeeze as much money out of bookmakers as it can, money which comes directly out of the hands of punters. Punters are the customers here, they are the investors. Erode all confidence in the product (racing) and the management (HRI) and the industry is screwed. Bit by bit, HRI are on their way to achieving that goal....Posted byScott Fergusonat17:39

exchange betting in California doesn't guarantee Betfair a start

Much has been made this week of the Californian government passing legislation to allow exchange wagering on horse racing in the state. With Betfair already having a presence in California as owners of broadcast network and pari-mutuel operator TVG, and sponsoring the bill, the easy conclusion is that Betfair will start up in the USA. But a lot of water still has to pass under the bridge before a Betfair-run exchange can be licensed.

This bill also allowed pari-mutuel operators to raise takeout on Californian racing pools... so where is the logic in pushing rake up to over 20% on one hand, and bringing in a foreign company to run a business on 2-5% commission at the same time? Of course there's no guarantee Betfair would use (or be allowed to use) the same business model as they have in the UK, a market subject to far more competition.

Politicians have a history of making half-baked decisions, particularly when they are desperate for cash (the state of California is as financially healthy as Greece at the moment) and it involves gambling, a sector which invests obscene amounts into lobbying. Horsemen's groups have plenty of influence and are likely to demand either unviable rates of commission, or that a Californian racing exchange is operated by the local racing industry. That's despite Betfair having all the expertise in the industry, and access to solid liquidity from experienced exchange users. If you open an intra-state exchange only, where nobody has ever used an exchange before and there is no history of fixed-odds wagering, it will struggle. It's the chicken and egg thing - without liquidity, you can't get punters. Without punters, you can't get liquidity.

All this bill has done is opened the state up to the opportunity of exchange wagering on local racing. There's still a lot of debate and lobbying to go before punters can get excited. After all, they haven't even had the tired old debate about the ethics of laying horses to lose....Posted byScott Fergusonat12:02

AFL Grand Final controversy

Saturday's AFL Grand Final was a marvellous conclusion to the 2010 season. Collingwood and St Kilda fought out a tremendous battle which went right down to the wire, so close in fact that it ended up in a draw, Collingwood 9.14 (68) to St Kilda 10.8 (68). Once a year followers probably expected the match to go into extra time to decide a result on the day, but they were wrong. Australia's native sport is unique in that a drawn Grand Final goes to a full replay the following week. The last time it happened was 1977, before most other sports found ways to break the deadlock. The FA Cup Final for example went to replays as recently as 1993, but the round-ball game is far more prone to stalemates. American sports always go to extra-time so there's no surprise there. The rugby codes now go to extra time, but not sure how long that has been the case.

Only three times in 115 years has the AFL (or VFL) Grand Final ended in a draw and required a replay. Some have argued it's about finding the better team on the day - which is exactly the reason why I think it should go to a replay - there was no better team, so why use a silly five-minute tiebreaker system?

I love the fact the AFL is different and is going to a full replay next weekend. I'd be gutted if I'd flown all the way back from London to watch my favourite team and then have to find a way to buy another ticket, but c'est la vie.

For betting purposes, all match betting on the h2h result would have been paid as a dead-heat. Margin betting (such as Collingwood 1-39) would always include the draw as an option so you lose, and bets on the 'Grand Final Winner' would be carried over to this week.Posted byScott Fergusonat18:25

Arsenal’s Financial Strategy Will Reap It’s Rewards

 Subscribe in a reader

Week after week, I listen to the criticisms of Arsenal from non-Gunners fans and the constant belief that Arsene Wenger should be sacked as Arsenal manager. In the modern day world of football, it seems that winning is everything, no matter the cost of success of the consequences of doing so. The argument goes that Arsenal aren’t winning under Wenger and so this completely justifies adopting their approach of developing young players and living within their financial means.

A justifiable argument perhaps, but only if one takes a very short-term view. Firstly, while no Gooner would claim to be happy with the lack of silverware coming their way, a large number of them so enjoy watching the breathtaking free-flowing football on display that it is a sacrifice many are willing to make.

Leaving the quality of the football aside, there is a very simple reason why Arsenal’s approach is the best one. Money. Put simply, the only way to compete with the top teams without developing your own players is to match them pound for pound and pay top dollar for proven world class players.

Unfortunately, the majority of the top teams are not living in the real world at the moment. For Manchester City to pay Yaya Toure

Slots Myths Busted

Interested in getting into playing on slot machines, either in casinos or online, but worried about some of the things you have heard about them? Well let us dispel some of the myths that surround them…..

Slot machines are for the small time, second-class citizens of the gambling world: FALSE. This may have been true many years ago when complimentary bonuses were indeed handed out to those players who used tables as opposed to slot machines, but it is no longer the case. Slot machines now account for more than seventy percent of casinos revenue, and slot players are therefore respected and given the same kind of bonuses as other players.

There is no point in playing on a machine or in a game where someone has just hit a jackpot as it won’t pay out again for a long time: FALSE. Slot machines just do not work like that, as much as the casino managers may like it! The games run on a Random Number Generator, which is constantly, even when the game is not being played, running through numbers. The numbers correspond to the stops on the wheel that display the symbols that you as a player see when the reel stops. When you press the spin button the Random Number Generator picks the combination at that very millisecond, so whether you win or lose is dependent on the combination that the Generator is cycling through at that particular moment. For this reason it makes no difference whether someone else, or you for that matter have just had a win on the game, and by the same token this means that a game or machine is never

NFL – New York Jets defeat the New England Patriots

We are experiencing his second year as a pro, and despite many commentators and sports analyst might keep down their expectations when it comes to the Jet’s second year quarterback Mark Sanchez, one thing is certain: he is got what it takes to really bring down a winning game. But is he consistent? He was key in this week’s 28-14 win over the New England Patriots, and whether you like the kid or not, you must admit that he did outplay no other then Tom Brady last Sunday. So sure, he is key to this comeback for the Jets, but heck, he is also a bit responsible for what happened last week.

Things are looking swell for the New York Jets, particularly after the team’s season opening performance against the Baltimore Ravens in the first NFL Monday Night game in the current season. And boy, where they disappointed after this first lost. The Ravens won their sixth consecutive game against the New York Jets, and all though it was a small margin, the Ravens’ defense kept the Jets to a very low 176 yards, six first downs, and managed to keep Sanchez under the 74 passing yard mark.

It was not a good debut for the Jets. The $1.6 billion New Meadowlands Stadium was filled with over 70,000 Jets fans that were really hoping that their team would walk the walk after all the talking they had made in the opening weeks at the news and in their behind the scenes HBO special. But the Ravens got in the way.

And then came the New England Patriots and Mark Sanchez put his foot down and played like he is expected to. He was the Master and Commander of a recharged offense that was finally giving in some good results. The New York Jets’ quarterback came in for a career-high 21 passes on 30 attempts passing for 220 yards with 3 touchdown passes via Braylon Edwards, Jerricho Cotchery and Dustin Keller.

This was some sort of a closing for what had been a very tumultuous week. Not only the Jets’ a 1 point loss against the Ravens in a game where the Jets were a -1.5 point favorite on the spread, but also because the Jet’s players were involved in a scandal in which the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell had to initiate an investigation in regards to the treatment that a female reporter, Ines Sainz from TV Azteca, received while she was performing some interviews.

But that’s a different story. Here is what matters, the Pats went home with their first defeat of the season, and despite Brady trying to put on a late show comeback, all he was able to bring onto him was two interceptions. Now, when it comes to betting on the NFL, here are a couple of interesting notes. The Jets were a

NFL – Chicago Bears defeat Dallas Cowboys

by Stephen Lars on Sep.23, 2010, under Football, Sports News

The Dallas Cowboy are having some serious issues. Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips and the offensive coordinator Jason Garret were blaming each other for the very unsuccessful offensive play that cost them the win last week against the Washington Redskins. Don’t mind Tony Romo’s 282 passing yards. At the end, in the last play and only 6 points under, the Cowboys had a chance to win it. Romo completed a pass to Roy Williams who was open in the end zone. But there was a yellow flag. There was a holding on Alex Barron. Washington could finally celebrate.

This time around, neither Garret nor Wade Phillips had too many to blame. The team is not working, the game plans are week, and let’s face it, the Chicago Bears were able to brake pass the Cowboys defense like if it was a knife into butter. Wade’s defense had nothing to against the Bears, and that cost him the 27-10 loss against the Chicago Bears.

Let’s put this into perspective. The Cowboys defense had not allowed a single touchdown in three-consecutive regular season games. Jay Cutler, the Bears touchdown, had some issues at the beginning of the game. He certainly was found running for dear life when, early in the game, Cowboys’ linebackers DaMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer had a chance to rough him up a little. As if that was not enough troubles for the Bear’s offensive, the left tackle, Chris Williams was injured in the first quarter.

Now, here is the thing that is a bit upsetting for the Cowboys fans. The 45th annual edition of the NFL championship game, the Super Bowl XLV will be held in the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium in Arlington Texas. But, those local fans are probably not going to be cheering for the home team, as the Cowboys are not playing as they are expected to. At least not if they are really hoping to make it to the post-season, and then keep on with some rhythm into the conference finals and the Super Bowl.

Now, the Cowboys were a 3.5 favorite against the Washington Redskins. And hoping that the team would make use of their hometown advantage and play much harder against the Chicago Cubs, they once again were the favorite against the Bears. The sporstbook industry had set the handicap at -7 points in the spread. Now, this time around, it seems inevitable that they have to go out there and bring a victory. Now, considering their below par performance, thing have changed around for next week when it comes to betting in the NFL.

As of press time, on their next match against the Houston Texans, the Dallas Cowboys are

NASCAR – Clint Bowyer penalized after winning the Chase Opener

by Stephen Lars on Sep.24, 2010, under Motor Sports, Sports News

When it comes to car racing, be it the NASCAR Sprint Series, the Formula One series, the Moto GP, it has always been a matter of how far can you take the technical limitations that are set upon the car to the limit. It has always been a matter of how you can cut the corners inside the legal margins to, at the end, have the fastest car or the fastest bike out there. Let’s not forget that at the end of these 200, 300, 500 mile-long races, it all comes down to a matter of seconds and milliseconds between the winner and everybody else.

Don’t get me wrong here, I do realize this limitations set upon chief mechanics and team engineers are set to keep things fair and let the talent and driving skills of each driver be what makes the difference. Let’s not forget also that some of these limitations are also place to keep the safe being of the racers and spectators as the No. 1 priority.

So yes, if you do make changes that go too far, if you cheat (but that’s not the right word here) and break some regulations to make your car go faster, you and your team should be penalized. But I would go so far as to expect that if as a Driver and a team both Clint Bowyer and Richard Childress Racing should be penalized with such a harsh punishment, then NASCAR should have done so on Sunday, not wait for an extended review and give the punishment on a Wednesday afternoon.

Here is the thing, why did it take so long.  They have penalized Clint Bowyer with 150 points. Ok, Sunday night, after he won the race, Bowyer was 2nd in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Thursday Morining, that same guy now sits 12th over 180 points from the first place and basically without the slightest chance to win the Chase. For a single race infraction, 150 point must be up-to-date the highest penalization any NASCAR driver has received. The thing here is that, as of press time, Sprint Cup officials have yet to make an statement regarding the details of what was it that Richard Childress Racing had done wrong.

They, the evaluative commission who tested the car, have said that it was a matter of how the team mechanics and engineers had arranged the care body over the frame, giving it some sort of aerodynamic advantage. But here is the twist. If the infraction was really worth a 150-point sanction, why didn’t the guys who check the cars after the race noticed that anything was wrong?

NBA – Yao Ming could play in the preseason with the Houston Rockets

by Stephen Lars on Sep.26, 2010, under Basketball, Sports News

Yao Ming has been struggling with injuries ever since he made it to the NBA. But truth be said, he has been battling with injuries since his years rookie year playing for the Shangai Sharks in the Chinese Basketball Association. By the time Yao was 17, he had broken his foot twice. He was fully capable of recovering completely and it has been said that since that second injury, he lost some 10 to 15 inches worth of his jumping ability.

When Yao came to play in the NBA, he was the first foreign player ever to be picked as the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft, without ever playing in an NCAA affiliated college beforehand. Now, he did not have it easy coming into the NBA. He had to deal with many unsporting commentaries from both the specialized press (who can forget Charles Barkley’s encounter with a donkey’s buttock after Yao scored his first 20 points in a single game).

Yet not only commentators gave him a hard time, even teams have been a bit harsh on him. The Miami Heat gave out 8000 fortune cookies to the fans on their first game against Yao Ming and the Rockets. As if that was not enough, there where the now infamous and somewhat rude and offensive (to say the least) pregame comments from Shaquille O’Neal.

Now, the issues come when you consider that the Rockets have only make it past the first round of the Playoff’s once since Yao has been playing for the Rockets. He has had to deal with many injuries, and considering this last foot surgery, which seemed at its moment as a drastic reconstruction of his foot, he has missed many games in each season.

Yao has not played since July 2009, and he is not eager to make his comeback. Doctors have gave him the thumbs up, but head coach Rick Adelman has been warned that Yao should only play 24 minutes per game. Yao is aware that he needs to take it easy. Recovering from such a complex procedure takes time, and there is no need to put more stress then what it is ultimately necessary on his foot.

The Houston Rockets begin their training camp this week. The team will play its first exhibition game on against the Orlando Magic on October 5th. Perhaps we will be able to see Yao take on a couple minutes worth of play.

NFL – Braylon Edwards from the New York Jets arrested for DUI

by Stephen Lars on Sep.26, 2010, under Football, Sports News

Both the NFL and the New York Jets have made a significant effort to avoid these kinds of situations for their famous (and even the not so famous) professional football players. As a matter of fact, most teams, including the Jets, offer their players a discreet and professional safe rides program to keep this sort of issues from happening.

The Jets receiver could have avoided all this bad-press and the charges had he made a simple phone call. More then two thirds of the 32 NFL teams have their own safety program to avoid players or team members from driving under the influence. The NFL Players Association has its own program, so that each player is covered by the union, regardless of whether the team the play for has its own safe driving program or not. Matter of fact, even the NFL took a page from that book and implemented a similar program for its non playing employees.

Now, both programs were simply ignored by Edwards. When police detained him in the outskirts of Manhattan’s West Side, and gave him a breath test, he recorded double the legal limit. Way to raise the bar!

So what is the point of making all this institutional efforts to keep players from driving drunk, if at the end, the guys are going to take on their nice cars and drive anyway. At least get a taxi. You can afford it.

The Jests have hired a program called Player Protect. It is a service provided exclusively for professional athletes. Player Protect agents are either retired or current law-enforcement agents that are authorized to carry their weapons in all 50 states.

So not only do it is a driving issue, it also comes as a driver-bodyguard combo. Here is the thing; most of us don’t get these kinds of privileges when we go out partying. Yet the irony is that, those who actually get them, don’t necessarily use them.  It is not only their drunk ass behind the wheel that is in danger when driving under the influence; the security of others is the reason why these safe driving efforts have been made. It is still uncertain what charges Edwards might face. If that judge want’s to make an example out of him, he might be in some serious trouble.

Will victory over Wolves spur on Tottenham?

Posted on September 22nd, 2010 in English Premiership

With fans of rival teams suggesting that Harry Redknapp’s inexperience at balancing a squad will lead to their downfall this season, Spurs have successfully passed the first test in a number of upcoming challenges that will eventually show whether or not they are able to cope with the added pressure of playing midweek Champions League games.

Despite going one nil down against Wolves at the weekend, Spurs finished the game in fine style and showed that they are a side which contains plenty of fighting spirit. No one would have made Wolves betting tips to win the game anyway and the result is not definitive proof that Spurs are always going to be able to cope with the added demands that they are facing, but it is an early sign that despite being managed by a man who has no Champions League experience, the North London club are still moving in the right direction.

Should Spurs suffer any more injuries to their squad, they may find themselves in a trickier situation than the one they face currently, but they have so far coped admirably with the loss of their main striker, Jermain Defoe. However, against a side such as Chelsea, who are going to be far more capable defensively than the likes of Wolves, Spurs may well find themselves floundering in a situation in which a tired team devoid of its top players comes unstuck. Betfair Football Andy Gray suggests the side could struggle in the future.

At present, though, this prediction seems a little premature given that Spurs are only just entering the beginning of a busy cycle, one that is likely to throw up tougher propositions than a game against Wolves at home. If Spurs can overcome those tests, then we will see whether it is merely potential that Spurs have, or real talent in the here and now.

Race is on for Champions League places

Although the season is only five games old, certain battles are beginning to play out. It looks like the big three of Chelsea, Man United and Arsenal will challenge for title again, while the battles for European places and relegation are already taking shape and they look as though they are going to be tightly fought. If the top three stay where they are, it leaves one all important Champions League place available. Although other teams will claim they are in the battle for fourth spot, the Betfair Football odds suggest it will be a two horse race between Tottenham and Manchester City.

It’s not known what targets the Man City owners have set Roberto Mancini for the season, but it’s pretty safe to say a Champions League place is up there, along with some kind of silverware. With City being dumped out of the Carling Cup by West Brom, their options for success are dwindling. The Europa League and FA Cup seem like Mancini’s only real chance of winning a trophy this campaign. Mancini will probably be focusing the majority of his efforts into claiming that Champions League spot, even though the Italian is still publically claiming to still be in the title race.

Tottenham could well suffer from their own success last season, the Champions League will push Harry Redknapp’s squad to their absolute limits and their league form could suffer as a result. When Spurs played Werder Bremen in their opening group game, they lost their next league game to Wigan, in a tired looking display. If this Spurs squad can’t handle competing on both fronts then they could be in for trouble. It’s fair to say Mancini’s Man City would sacrifice their Europa League campaign if it interfered with their quest for Champions League football.

Although some people will no doubt make Aston Villa betting tips to make fourth, they look set for a transitional season. However, there is another team who would like to think of themselves as in the race for that fourth spot, Liverpool. After the nightmare start, Roy Hodgson’s men don’t look capable of mixing it with the big boys this season. The Anfield club’s only hope for success this season seems to be in the Europa League and maybe an FA Cup run. If things carry on as they are at the club, it could be a while yet before the 2005 winners return to Europe’s top competition.

Arsenal earn a point

 Subscribe in a reader

It’s been an unpredictable couple of weeks for the Gunners, with Van Persie out until mid-October, and Walcott joining him on the injured list, the last thing Wenger needed was a sending off and a last minute equaliser.
Wenger may have a case when he bemoans the additional minute added on top of injury time, which allowed Darren Bent to sneak in and nick an equaliser in a last gasp effort at the Stadium of Light, but few would deny Steve Bruce’s men their point. To further add to Arsenal’s woes, Song was dismissed for picking up a second yellow card shortly after the break, and Fabregas was substituted early on in proceedings after struggling with his hamstring.

Arsenal showed great spirit with ten men, and were unlucky not to take all three points back down the M1, especially when Rosicky smashed a penalty over the bar following an Elmohamady foul on Nasri, but a plucky Sunderland side who had smothered the Arsenal midfield all afternoon took control of proceedings and earned themselves a point.

After demolishing Braga earlier in the week at the Emirates it is clear that Arsenal are in the habit of winning, and if it weren’t for the unstoppable Chelsea would be looking seriously like title contenders. In fact, the Gunners were the Andy Gray betting picks to win the league this season.

A good test for the depleted squad will be the short trip to Spurs on Tuesday night in the Carling Cup. Harry Redknapp will undoubtedly field a strong side, but many are already predicting starts for Vela, Emmanuel-Thomas and Djourou in the derby as Wenger pursues his youth in the tournament. Next weekend’s home tie with West Brom shouldn’t cause too many sleepless nights, although the Baggies out-played Birmingham at the weekend and held Tottenham at home the week before, the Gunners will be confident of picking up the points and gaining some momentum before the crucial clash with Chelsea on October 3rd.

With a few weeks gone in the season, it looks as though the top of the table will have a familiar look to it this campaign. Chelsea and Arsenal are playing the best football, while Manchester United have been picking up points without playing their best football.

Meanwhile, the Notts Forrest betting tips suggest the side are still in with a chance of making the play-offs despite their poor start to the Championship season.

The side are currently 17th in the table, but they are only four points off 6th spot.

Villa look for Houllier cup magic

Posted on September 20th, 2010 in English Premiership, FA Cup

After reaching the semi final of the FA Cup and the final of the Carling Cup last season, Aston Villa will be looking to go that extra step and be up there with the FA Cup odds to win this campaign.

In hiring Gerard Houllier as their new manager, Villa have a new boss with past success in English cup competitions. During his six years on Mersey side with Liverpool, Houllier won six trophies, including the Carling Cup twice and the FA Cup. That FA Cup triumph in 2001 will go down as the most famous of the wins though.

The final held at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, looked to be going Arsenal’s way as the clock reached 82 minutes, only for Michael Owen to pop up and equalise in the 83rd. After doing nothing all game, Owen again popped up with two minutes of normal time remaining to fire past David Seaman and give Liverpool the famous victory.

Villa fans and those looking at betting odds premier league wise will be hoping that the French manager can bring some of that success to Villa Park. Their Carling Cup final loss against Manchester United was a massive hammer blow to Martin O’Neill’s men. In a match they could easily have won after a James Milner penalty gave them an early lead.

The FA Cup defeat came in the semi final stage against eventual winners Chelsea. Villa defended like warriors and were unlucky to lose by such a heavy looking 3-0 score line. A Didier Drogba goal halfway through the second half gave Chelsea the advantage before late goals from Florent Malouda and Frank Lampard gave the score line an unfair look. The Villa Park faithful will be desperate for some silverware this year. It has been a long 14 years since their last trophy.

NFL – Notes on Week 1 and the chances of an 18 game regular season

The NFL has been pushing to convince NFL team owners to promote an 18 game season. Commissioner Roger Goodell has pointed out that the NFL has the right to impose an 18 game regular season, and a 4 game preseason, as it would be in perfect accordance to the previous agreement the league has with its players.

Some team owners, like Bob Craft from the New England Patriots, have already spoken out their desire to move on with an 18 game regular season. He has said for an interview with the Associated Press that an extended season is a win-win situation. And it probably is, if you take into consideration what each team will make in terms of ticket sales and televised rights.

Commissioner Goodell is right about the fact that the contract between the league and the player’s labor agreement could take in an 18 game season. Yet that is not the main issue, as this agreement expires once this current issue is over. And trust me here, the extended regular season is going to be one of the key-issues when it comes to negotiating a new collective agreement among players and the league.

Some owners, on the other hand, are proposing the season to be kept at 20 games. To do so, they are agreeing to an 18 season regular season, but they are trying to bring down the number of preseason games from 4 to 2. This must be an attempt to keep the health of their players.

Yet, this is one of the most dangerous and physically demanding sports. Injuries are one of the most important issues in this sport, a factor that teams need to take into account every season. Only the healthier teams at the end of a regular season make it to the conference finals. And that is where two extra games could make a difference.

Take this NFL season opener as a reference: The Detroit Lions have already lost their starting QB Matthew Stafford to a separated shoulder. Ryan Grant’s torn ligament in his ankle might hurt the Green Bay Packers quite a bit. The Philadelphia Eagles lost fullback Leonard Weaver and center Jamal Jackson to season ending injuries. And the Jets lost defensive tackle Kris Jenkins to a torn ACL. The Indianapolis Colts lost safety Bob Sanders to a torn bicep injury, and it is uncertain when he will be back.

And things are not going to get better for week No 2. Leave it at 16 or move to an 18 regular season game? Let’s see what Goodell and the players and the owners come up with at the end of the season.

NCAA Football – Alabama to play Duke on Saturday

by Stephen Lars on Sep.17, 2010, under Football, Previews

The Crimson Tide will be visiting the Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, North Carolina, to play Duke in the third week of regular season. Duke is not expected to put much of a fight against Alabama’s game. Now, rumor has it that Mark Ingram, the first Heisman Trophy winner for Alabama, is finally going to make his comeback after the talented player had to undergo knee surgery on August 31st.

Mark has been on the sidelines as the Crimson Tide has pulled off two great games against inferior teams, nonetheless the young men from Alabama have proved that they deserve to be among the favorite and top ranked teams in the nation. Alabama began it season with a demolishing 48-3 victory over San Jose State, and even managed to defeat the (back then No. 18 ranked) guys from Penn State with an easy 24-3. Someone said that Bama needed a boost for morale. Well, Ingram and the talented defensive end Marcell Dareus are expected to be back in top shape for their weekend game against Duke.

Trent Richardson, Ingram’s replacement, has certainly played to the expectations of the Crimson Tide’s fans. For this two opening games, Richardson has rushed for 210 yards and three touchdowns. A pair of statistics that prove that though having Ingram is a plus, even if he is not there, they’ve got him covered.

On the other end of the offensive line, Greg McElroy threw for 229 yards and two touchdowns. As of press time, Alabama is ranked among the top 20 teams in the nation.

Duke on the other hand started the season with a 41-27 victory over Elon, but then had a very entertaining and difficult game against Wake Forest, which they lost 54 to 48. Duke is 0-10 all-time against No. 1 teams. And this should not be the exception. If you are into wagering on your favorite college football team, or like betting on NCAA football, you might want to take notice, as the question is not if Bama will win, but if they will cover the spread.  As of press time, Alabama is a very strong favorite to win this game. The guys over at BetIAS.com have made Alabama a -23

Can Big Sam move beyond bludgeoning?

 Subscribe in a reader

Although Blackburn Rovers are unlikely to be a delight to watch anytime in the near future, they have a few players at their disposal who should at least be able to show a little more creativity than some of Sam Allardyce’s previous teams.

Having already managed to undo any attempt made by Paul Ince to turn Rovers into a side capable of keeping the ball on the ground and focusing upon crisp passing and moving, Allardyce would no doubt defend his decision to reverse that trend by revealing the need to play to the strengths of his current players. The latest Premier League odds suggest Blackburn will stay up, and Allardyce will no doubt see this as vindication.

However, although Allardyce often looks to build upon strengths that have to do with the physical side of the game, he has a side at Blackburn that he could (albeit with some effort required on his part) encourage to play some aesthetically pleasing football. This may sound farfetched to many Premier League fans but the likes of Chris Samba, David Dunn and the two Dioufs are more than capable, with a little coaching, of keeping the ball on the ground and playing in a style more akin to Barcelona than the old Wimbledon.

Although Allardyce may suggest that fans ultimately prioritise results over performances, the fact that Rovers continue to see their attendances drop at Ewood Park and are unable to inspire their fans to travel in large numbers to away ties, shows that even the most ardent of fans do not like the way he sets his team out. The football predictions for the weekend suggest another low crowd.

Despite this, it is unlikely that Big Sam will change his philosophy anytime soon, so his vision of fear over wonder may continue to be the battle waged at Ewood Park on Saturday afternoons.

Juventus come unstuck at home

 Subscribe in a reader

Juventus Europa League campaign started with a shock result at home to Polish side Lech Poznan, drawing 3-3 in their opening Group A match after all Europa League betting pundits predicted an easy win.

The Italian giants came from 2-0 down to lead the match 3-2 going into injury time, only for Lech to grab an equaliser right at the death. The star of the show was undoubtedly Lech’s Latvian striker Artjoms Rudnevs. The 22 year old scored a dream hat-trick at the Stadio Olimpico, guaranteed his side started their Europa campaign with a positive draw.

After Rudnev had put Lech 2-0 ahead after half an hour, Juventus left back Gieorgio Chellini grabbed a goal back in first half injury time. The goal made up for Chellini’s mistake that had let Rudnev in to score his second goal.

Five minutes after the break the left back scored his second of the match to level the scores. Juventus took the lead on 68 minutes through an Alessandro Del Piero wonder strike. Del Piero’s left foot shot whistled into the top corner to give the Italians the advantage with 20 minutes left. Chellini very nearly completed his hat-trick later, when he narrowly failed to connect with a Del Piero free-kick.

Lech looked to be down and out with the game going into the second minute of added time only for Rudnev to silence the stadium with a cracking strike past former Arsenal keeper Alex Manninger to give Lech a share of the points.

Juventus will need to improve if they are going to live up to their early Europa League Odds tag as one of the favourites to win the trophy.

Ipswich v Cardiff Preview

Posted on September 18th, 2010 in English Championship

This is Ipswich’s second huge game in the last few days after the Tractor Boys faced table topping QPR on Tuesday night. They were soundly beaten 3-0 in that outing and it’ll be interesting to see how they respond as they face a Cardiff City side who are sat in 2nd place. The Bluebirds are also looking to bounce back having unexpectedly lost their last game 2-1 to struggling Leicester.

Not much was expected of Ipswich in this campaign after last season’s disaster. Despite huge expectations with Roy Keane at the helm and bucket loads of money being thrown at the team, things just didn’t click and the Tractor Boys had to be satisfied with a mid-table position. That meant that when this summer came and there was such little transfer activity, supporters feared the worst. However, as it turns out Town have made an extremely good start to the season and they currently sit in 5th position. Their 3-0 defeat to QPR on Tuesday happened to be their first loss of the season and other than that, they have three wins and two draws to their name.

Cardiff are also flying and the Bluebirds sit in 2nd place, with thirteen points to their name. They may have lost their last game, but before that they were absolutely flying having recorded four straight wins. While a lot of focus has been on the signing of Craig Bellamy, the Welshman hasn’t featured for the past few weeks due to injury so their success can’t be attributed to his influence. It appears as though other players are stepping up to the mark instead, with the likes of Jay Bothroyd and Chris Burke already bagging six league goals between them this term. The fact that Bellamy isn’t contributing makes the Bluebirds appear even more daunting and you can only imagine that they’ll strengthen their position as the season progresses.

As for team news, Ipswich look set to be without Shane O’Connor and Darren O’Dea who are struggling with hamstring and knee injuries respectively. Roy Keane also has the dilemma of handing Connor Wickham a start, after the youngster impressed on various substitute appearances. Cardiff on the other hand have plenty of injury worries and Danny Drinkwater and Michael Chopra look almost certain to miss out through injury. Elsewhere, Dave Jones is sweating on the fitness of Craig Bellamy, Jay Bothroyd and Seyi Olofinjana who are all penned in for late fitness tests.

While Ipswich have performed well this term, a lot of that success is due to their form on the road. Cardiff on the other hand have picked up quite a few points away from home and we think they’ll bounce back from Tuesday’s defeat with victory at Portman Road. 2-1 Bluebirds.

Hull v Nottingham Forest Preview

These were two sides who were tipped to be at least challenging for a playoff place, with Hull only just coming down from the Premiership while Nottingham Forest made it right the way to 3rd place last term. However, things are a little different this season and both occupy lowly mid-table positions. Hull are in 16th place, while Nottingham Forest’s first victory of the season on Tuesday has put them one place higher.

Nobody quite knew what to expect from Hull this term, with severe financial problems resulting in many key players being sold. However, when the club appointed the highly regarded Nigel Pearson as manager there was more optimism, although the evidence so far suggests that City will have to settle for a season without success. The club have picked up seven points so far with two wins, one draw and three defeats to their name. Pearson’s men will have been relieved to win in their last game which saw them comfortably beat Derby 2-0 at the KC Stadium. Prior to that, their last victory was on the opening day of the season.

Nottingham Forest are another side who will have been relieved to grab three points in their last outing. Forest’s run was even worse than Hull’s and their last 2-1 win over Preston happened to be only their first victory of the season. That ended a run which saw them draw four on the bounce and while results so far won’t have been acceptable to the Forest faithful, it still means they’re only three points off the playoffs at the moment. Of course, whether or not that win will turn things around is another matter. Billy Davies has not hidden his frustrations and it appears as though there are major internal problems at the City Ground.

It’s mixed news on the team news front for Hull who are likely to persist with Jimmy Bullard again, after the midfielder has started featuring for the Tigers again. Elsewhere however, Caleb Folan and James Harper look set to miss out as they struggle with thigh and foot injuries respectively. There’s just the one piece of news for Nottingham Forest as Rob Earnshaw looks set to return for selection. The former Derby man was forced to miss their last encounter but has now recovered from the hamstring injury that kept him out. However, after Forest’s midweek success, Billy Davies may opt to keep changes to a minimum.

Nottingham Forest may have won their last match away, but in general their form on the road is dismal. Hull haven’t been stern performers either this season but with Nigel Pearson’s men holding the home advantage, we think they could just about edge this one
